Cubs Notes: Madrigal, Wesneski, Leiter Jr.
Cubs infielder Nick Madrigal has only played second base in his big league career thus far, but he’s not likely to see a lot of time there this year. The club’s major investment this offseason was signing shortstop Dansby Swanson, thus pushing Nico Hoerner over to second base. That nudged Madrigal into a competition for…Mar 16 · MLB Trade Rumors Cubs Mark Leiter Nick Madrigal Hayden Wesneski closers
Hayden Wesneski Expected To Win Final Rotation Spot
Chicago Cubs right-hander Hayden Wesneski is considered the favorite to win the team's fifth rotation spot to open the regular season. Manager David Ross calls the "it factor" for what Wesneski has. Chicago acquired him from the New York Yankees in 2022 for Scott Effross. The 25-year-old stands at 6-foot-3, 215 pounds and could be an X-factor in a rotation that also includes Marcus Stroman, Jameson Taillon, Drew Smyly and Justin Steele. Wesneski is beating out Adrian Sampson by not allowing a run so far in Cactus League play over 8 2/3 innings, striking out 11 and walking two. He looked great in his MLB debut for the Cubs last year (2.18 ERA, 33 K's in 33 innings) and could be worth a look as a late-round flier in deep mixed leagues.Mar 16 · Source via Cubs Hayden Wesneski
Examining The Cubs' Fifth Starter Options
Longtime Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks is expected to begin the season on the injured list, setting the 2023 Opening Day roster in Chicago up to be the first one to not include a member of the 2016 World Series championship team since 2012 following the departure of Willson Contreras and Jason Heyward over the offseason.…Feb 21 · MLB Trade Rumors Cubs Roenis Elias Kyle Hendricks Nick Neidert Adrian Sampson Keegan Thompson Hayden Wesneski
Hayden Wesneski, Javier Assad, Adrian Sampson In Mix For Rotation Spot
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks (shoulder) is expected to begin the season on the injured list. Also, the team announced that right-hander Keegan Thompson will open the season in a multi-inning relief role. That means, the Cubs currently have a vacant spot in the starting rotation. Currently, Hayden Wesneski, Javier Assad, and Adrian Sampson are all in the mix for that fifth-starter role. Between the three, Wesneski appears to have the most upside right now. He posted a 2.18 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 33/7 K/BB ratio across 33 innings (six appearances, four starts) last season with the Cubs. He could be worth a look in deep leagues or NL-only formats, assuming he snags that final rotation spot. However, all three players should get a legitimate chance to win the job during Spring Training.Feb 18 · Source via Cubs Javier Assad Adrian Sampson Hayden Wesneski
