  • Romy Gonzalez To Begin Rehab Assignment This Week

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

Boston Red Sox infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez (hamstring) hit indoors on Saturday, and manager Alex Cora said on Sunday that the hope is Gonzalez will start a minor-league rehab assignment on June 11 with Triple-A Worcester. Gonzalez returned from his first stint on the injured list due to a left-wrist sprain on May 8, but he's back on the IL with a hammy issue. Cora said he doesn't expect Gonzalez to be out "that long." In just 35 at-bats this year for Boston, the 27-year-old is hitting .257 with six RBI. With Vaughn Grissom (hamstring) also on the shelf for Boston, Gonzalez could see some playing time at the keystone in Beantown if he makes it back before Grissom. Enmanuel Valdez is another option at second base.

  • Red Sox To Designate Zack Short For Assignment

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

The Red Sox will designate infielder Zack Short for assignment, reports Julian McWilliams of the Boston Globe (X link). Boston also optioned right-hander Naoyuki Uwasawa to Triple-A Worcester. The moves clear active roster spots for Romy Gonzalez and Nick Pivetta, each of whom will return from the injured list before tomorrow's game in Atlanta. Short is out of minor...

  • Romy Gonzalez Not Close To Returning

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

Boston Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez (wrist) is not progressing as the team had hoped and is not close to a return from the 10-day injured list. Gonzalez landed on the injured list with a left-wrist sprain on April 13, but the good news is he's not dealing with any structural damage. There's no timetable on the 27-year-old's return since he has yet to resume baseball activities. Once he is able to come back from the injured list, Gonzalez will serve as infield depth for the BoSox up the middle behind Ceddanne Rafaela, and eventually, Vaughn Grissom (hamstring). So far in his first season in Beantown, Gonzalez has only seen action in two games and has gone 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout. He can continue to be ignored for fantasy purposes.

  • Romy Gonzalez's MRI Exam Comes Back Clean

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

Boston Red Sox infielder Romy Gonzalez's (wrist) MRI exam came back clean, according to manager Alex Cora. The Red Sox sent Gonzalez for testing after he felt pain in his left wrist when swinging the bat on Wednesday, but the 27-year-old has dodged a bullet in terms of structural damage in his wrist. He's still on the 10-day injured list, though, and probably isn't going to be ready to return to the big-league club when he's eligible to return. Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout in his two games played with the BoSox this year before getting hurt. When healthy, he'll serve as middle-infield depth (mainly at second base) and isn't much of a fantasy asset.

  • Red Sox Place Romy Gonzalez, Isaiah Campbell On Injured List

    Headshot for Isaiah Campbell

The Red Sox announced that infielder Romy Gonzalez has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to April 11) due to a left wrist sprain.  This move comes a day after another IL placement, as Boston sent right-hander Isaiah Campbell to the 15-day injured list Friday due to a right shoulder impingement.  Infielder Bobby...

  • Red Sox Going With Platoons At Shortstop, Second Base

    Headshot for Romy Gonzalez

The Boston Red Sox plan to platoon at both shortstop and second base after the serious injury to shortstop Trevor Story (shoulder) last Friday. Romy Gonzalez and David Hamilton will mostly split time at shortstop, with Pablo Reyes and Enmanuel Valdez splitting time at second. Outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela will also see time up the middle in Beantown. Vaughn Grissom (groin, hamstring) will mostly work at the keystone but will also get reps at shortstop. Gonzalez was called up from Triple-A Worcester on Monday after slashing .321/.375/.821 with three homers and 10 RBI in 32 plate appearances on the farm. Grissom, who is expected to start a rehab assignment this weekend, should eventually see regular playing time for the BoSox at the keystone when he's healthy and is by far the most attractive fantasy player of all these middle-infield names.
