  • James Wood Shows Out In Triple-A

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood had himself a day at the dish on Thursday, leading Triple-A Rochester to a 6-3 win over Triple-A Buffalo. Wood finished the day going 4-for-5 with a pair of homers and a double. He added four runs scored and two RBI to sweeten the line even more. Wood has been excellent in Triple-A, hitting .441 with a 1.352 OPS to go along with two homers and two steals in 34 at-bats. It might not be long before he forces the Nationals hand and gets the call to the majors.

  • James Wood Showing Patient Approach

    Headshot for James Wood

Nationals outfielder James Wood is settling in at Triple-A Rochester. Wood is coming off an outstanding spring that saw him hit four long balls while slashing .364/.509/.705 in MLB camp. The former second-round draft pick also displayed an improved approach at the plate while striking out just 13 times and taking 11 walks in 57 plate appearances. Wood's patience at the plate has carried over to Rochester as he has walked (5) more than he has struck out (3) in the early going. The centerfielder's power and speed combination places him among the elite prospects in the game, and improved contact and walk skills will expedite his arrival in the nation's capital.

  • James Wood Assigned To Triple-A

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood will begin the year playing for Triple-A Rochester. With fellow top prospect Dylan Crews at Double-A Harrisburg, it will allow the two outfielders to get as many reps in any of the three outfield positions. Unlike Crews, who struggled at the plate this spring, the 21-year-old Wood hit .364 (16-for-44) with four home runs and three steals in Grapefruit League play this spring. The former second-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2021 should make his MLB debut this year in D.C. after coming over in the Juan Soto trade. The team's No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, has plenty of tools, but he's going to need to make more contact if he's going to thrive at the next level. Crews remains the better long-term prospect for fantasy managers.

  • James Wood Optioned To Minors

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood has been reassigned to minor league camp on Friday. He'll be joined by fellow top prospects Dylan Crews and Robert Hassell III as the Nats continue to shrink their roster. There was a low chance that Wood was going to make the team as he's only played as high as Double-A. This spring, Wood hit .341 with four home runs and seven RBI in 41 at-bats. The expectation is that he's going to start the season in Triple-A and then contribute to the big league roster at some point in 2024.

  • James Wood Scratched From Saturday's Lineup

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals top prospect James Wood (wrist) was scratched from Saturday's lineup against the St. Louis Cardinals after his bat handle hit his right wrist on a check-swing Friday. According to Nationals manager Davey Martinez, Woods is fine, and the team wanted to give him a day off. "He feels totally fine," said Martinez. The 21-year-old was removed from the lineup for precautionary reasons and took batting practice on Saturday. Woods has been lights out this spring, slashing .324/.457/.649 with three home runs, five RBI, and 12 runs scored over 17 games this spring. Woods has an NFBC ADP of 446 but is worth a late-round flier in most redraft leagues due to his massive upside.

  • Offseason In Review: Washington Nationals

    Headshot for CJ Abrams

The Nationals are entering the third full season of their rebuild, and their lackluster offseason was emblematic of a team more focused on the long-term picture than even feigning an attempt at competing in 2024. Major League Signings Joey Gallo, OF/1B: One year, $5MM Dylan Floro, RHP: One year, $2.25MM Nick Senzel, 3B/OF: One year,…

  • James Wood Tearing Up Spring Training

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood is raking through the first eight games of Grapefruit League play. The 21-year-old prospect is slashing .500/.636/1.063 with three home runs, six RBI, and one stolen base over 22 plate appearances. He's also walked six times and only struck out thrice. In his most recent contest, he hit cleanup and served as the Nats' DH. The hot start is very encouraging for Wood, who showed an impressive blend of power and speed across two levels of the minors last season (26 home runs, 91 RBI, and 18 stolen bases). He hit .262/.353/.520 to go along with the aforementioned counting stats with Nationals' High-A and Double-A affiliates. The hot start certainly gives him a chance to crack Washington's Opening Day roster but that is still far from a guarantee at this point. He's a must-roster in dynasty leagues and is an intriguing late-round pick in redraft leagues if it becomes clear that he's got a chance to make the team. Either way, he's a name to monitor moving forward.

  • James Wood Blasts Another Homer

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood got off to a hot start this spring. The 21-year-old blasted the first pitch he saw on Saturday over the wall. He carried that power into Sunday's contest. Wood smashed a two-run home run during Sunday's win over the Miami Marlins. Despite the early success, it's doubtful that Wood will crack the Opening Day roster. He slashed .248/.334/.492 with a ton of strikeouts during his time in Double-A last season. Wood has the potential to be a star but still needs time to develop all his skills.

  • James Wood Could Make MLB Debut In 2024

    Headshot for James Wood

Washington Nationals outfield prospect James Wood could make his major-league debut for the team in 2024. Wood is listed as the No. 14 overall prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. The Nationals acquired Wood in the Juan Soto trade back in 2022, and he's one of the top overall outfield prospects in the game after hitting a combined .262/.353/.520 with an .874 OPS, 26 home runs, 28 doubles, eight triples, 91 RBI, 18 stolen bases and 80 runs scored in 129 games with High-A Wilmington and Double-A Harrisburg in 2023. He's only 21 years old and will most likely begin the 2024 campaign at Triple-A, but if Wood continues to excel in the minors, the rebuilding Nats may have no choice but to call him up to the big leagues sooner than later. General manager Mike Rizzo said, "We're not going to block guy." Wood's prodigious power and speed combo make him a stash candidate in single-year fantasy leagues.
