Oswald Peraza Continues To Struggle
New York Yankees shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza went 0-for-4 versus the Washington Nationals on Wednesday. Peraza entered camp as the favorite to win the shortstop job, but has struggled to the tune of a .188 batting average to go along with one homer, one RBI and a pair of stolen bases. The 22-year-old made his big-league debut at the end of 2022 and hit a respectable .306 with one home run, two RBI and two stolen bases in 49 at-bats. Peraza has shown a nice combination speed and pop throughout his professional career, but top prospect and fellow shortstop Anthony Volpe has been on fire this spring and is breathing down Peraza's neck for the Opening Day start. Peraza is already on the 40-man roster, while Volpe is not and it's also possible that we see both players up the middle for the Yankees with Peraza shifting to second base. Volpe's draft value would climb significantly if he wins the job and managers with upcoming drafts should monitor the situation closely.

As top prospect Anthony Volpe continues to make a strong case to win the Yankees’ starting shortstop job this spring, Andy Martino of SNY reports that the team are not close to making a decision on who’ll start there on Opening Day. Yankees infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa has been at the center of plenty of speculation this spring. That’s both revolved around whether he’d hold onto the starting shortstop job with youngsters Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe on the horizon and whether he could be traded to an infield-needy team like the Dodgers or Rockies. Now, Kiner-Falefa’s role for the…

New York Yankees shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza (leg) is back in the team's Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday against the Boston Red Sox and right-hander Nick Pivetta, and he's starting at shortstop and batting seventh in the lineup. The 22-year-old injured his left leg last week and has been held out of the spring lineup since. He's still expected to break camp as the Yankees' starting shortstop on Opening Day, but fellow prospect Anthony Volpe is making things interesting. Peraza has gone 2-for-9 with a stolen base and two runs scored in four Grapefruit League games after hitting .306 with a homer, two RBI and two steals in his first 18 major-league games to close out 2022. He has a high floor, but fantasy managers will need to preach patience in single-year leagues in 2023.

Oswald Peraza Expected To Return Thursday
New York Yankees shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza (foot) is dealing with a minor foot injury in camp and is expected to return to the Grapefruit League lineup on Thursday, according to sources. Peraza is battling for the starting shortstop gig in spring training this year with fellow prospect Anthony Volpe and Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The 22-year-old Venezuelan has gone 2-for-9 so far in spring games with one stolen base, two walks and a strikeout in 12 plate appearances. His speed will probably be his best asset initially in the majors, with his power slowly developing as he matures. Peraza could be the favorite to open the 2023 season as the Yankees' shortstop, but he'll also need to hold off Volpe in the long run.

Anthony Volpe Continues To Swing Hot Bat This Spring
Yankees shortstop prospect Anthony Volpe went 1-for-2 with a run and pair of walks in a start on Monday. Volpe drew the start with fellow shortstop prospect Oswald Peraza (foot) sidelined with a minor foot injury. Volpe, 21, is the teams top prospect and has been off to a hot start this spring with a .353 batting average to go along with five runs, one home run, one RBI and three stolen bases over 17 at-bats. The young shortstop has developed physically since being draft in the first-round out of high school and has shown strong exit velocities and power to all fields. Volpe has opened the eyes of manager Aaron Boone and he has mentioned recently that Volpe could have a chance at breaking camp with the team. Although those words are encouraging, it is more likely that Volpe will open the season in Triple-A with Oswald Peraza already on the 40-man roster and shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa still in the mix. Regardless, Volpe has made real strides so far this spring and could make his big-league debut in 2023. Volpe's highest value is in dynasty leagues, but he when called up, he will make for an exciting addition in redraft leagues. He is a name to keep a close eye on this spring.

Oswald Peraza Misses Monday's Game
New York Yankees shortstop Oswald Peraza (foot) was held out of Monday's Grapefruit matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates. There is no need for fantasy managers to panic here. It sounds like Peraza is dealing with a minor foot issue, so the team decided to hold him out of this game. The Yankees don't want to risk anything in Spring Training, so he'll likely sit as long as he needs. There is a good chance that Peraza is back in the lineup for their next game.

Yankees Shortstops To Play Multiple Positions In Camp
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that infielders Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who are all competing for the Opening Day shortstop job in spring training, will play more than one position in camp. Kiner-Falefa has moved around the diamond his whole career and has even spent time at catcher. He also won a Gold Glove at third base in 2020. Volpe and Peraza have spent their careers mostly at the 6, though. Peraza has played 16 games at second base and none at third, while Volpe has played three games at third and none at second. Volpe and Peraza are young rising prospects for the Yanks, while Kiner-Falefa is the veteran of the group that gives the team the most positional versatility. It's expected that Peraza will win the job, with Volpe starting the year off in the minors for more seasoning.

Yankees Impressed With Oswald Peraza
New York Yankees shortstop Oswald Peraza made his MLB debut last September, and his transition to the big stage in the Bronx appeared seamless after he hit .306 in his first 49 major-league at-bats. The 22-year-old continues to impress this offseason, too. "He has the exit (velocities)," hitting coach Dillon Lawson said. "He has the contact and the bat-to-ball skills. For him, it's refining his plate discipline and making sure that the ball flight is good." Peraza will be competing with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and prospect Anthony Volpe for the starting shortstop job in spring training, and it's looking like Peraza is the early favorite. There's a lot to like about him (mostly speed), but fantasy managers may want to be patient, as his power in the big leagues may take some time to mature.

New York Yankees Will Have Shortstop Battle
According to New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone, the Yankees will have a shortstop battle in Spring Training. Current shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa is defending his spot as the starter, but young stars such as Oswald Peraza and prodigy Anthony Volpe will be evaluated in Spring Training for a possible starting role. Kiner-Falefa slashed .261/.314/.327 in his 531 plate appearances and swiped a career-high 22 bags. Peraza was promoted late last season and retained a .832 OPS through 56 plate appearances. Volpe is yet to be promoted to the pros but is on the cusp of becoming the next Yankees shortstop if he turns some heads in Spring Training. Boone will have critical decisions regarding the Yankees shortstop vacancy, and all three players are strong contenders to win the starting position.

Oswald Peraza Could Be The Favorite To Start At Short
New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman, manager Aaron Boone and owner Hal Steinbrenner have said to expect a spring training shortstop competition between incumbent Isiah Kiner-Falefa and top prospects Oswald Peraza and Anthony Volpe, but the feeling around the organization is that Peraza might enter camp in the lead. He's ranked No. 62 on Baseball America's top-100 prospect list and impressed at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and during a September call-up. Peraza has more offensive upside than Kiner-Falefa, who hit just four homers and struggled on defense. Volpe is New York's top prospect, but he has only 22 games at Triple-A under his belt and could use some more seasoning.
