  • Colt Keith Posting Modest Offensive Spring

    Headshot for Colt Keith

Detroit Tigers second/third baseman Colt Keith has put forth a .250 batting average with no home runs, five RBI, and no stolen bases in 24 Grapefruit League at-bats this spring. While it is unclear if the 22-year-old will start the season with the Tigers, he signed a six-year, $28.64 million contract extension this off-season. Keith had an excellent 2023 season between Double-A Erie and Triple-A Toledo, hitting a combined 27 HR with 101 RBI. He is a name to know in dynasty leagues, but Keith will likely play a fantasy role in re-draft leagues as well, perhaps as early as Opening Day.

  • Devin Sweet Clears Waivers, Outrighted To Triple-A

    Headshot for Colt Keith

Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Devin Sweet has cleared waivers and has been outrighted off the 40-man roster to Triple-A Toledo. Sweet was designated for assignment last week when the Tigers signed infield prospect Colt Keith to a six-year contract extension, meaning they had to place him on their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old has spent time with four organizations over the past four months as he has spent time with the Mariners, A's, Giants, and Tigers organizations. Sweet appeared in seven MLB games between the Mariners and A's last season but struggled to a 10.38 ERA in that time while surrendering four homers and six walks versus six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings of work. He spent the bulk of the 2023 season at Double-A with Seattle, tossing a stout 1.54 ERA and big-time 28.7% K-BB% across 27 appearances.

  • Colt Keith To Play Second Base In 2024

    Headshot for Colt Keith

Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris said the team won't shut the door on prospect Colt Keith playing third base in the future, but he will play second base in 2024. "We think Colt can play second and third. We think he has the chance to be an average or better second baseman. We also think it's going to save a little bit of the load on his arm and allow him to play the position really well," Harris said. Detroit signed Keith to a six-year contract extension just last weekend, and he'll be a candidate to make the Opening Day roster out of spring training. The 22-year-old is a bat-first infielder and has established himself as one of the better hitting prospects in the game. He hit .306/.380/.552 with 27 home runs in two minor-league stops in 2023 and will be appealing for his power in fantasy leagues, especially at the second base position.

  • Tigers Designate Devin Sweet For Assignment

    Headshot for Colt Keith

The Tigers announced Monday that they’ve designated right-hander Devin Sweet for assignment. Detroit only claimed Sweet off waivers 11 days ago — marking his fourth organization in four…

  • Tigers Sign Colt Keith To Six-Year Extension

    Headshot for Colt Keith

The Tigers announced a six-year contract extension with infield prospect Colt Keith. The deal guarantees Keith $28.6425MM and could max out at $82MM over nine years if three club options (covering the 2030, 2031, and 2032 seasons) are all escalated and exercised. Keith is represented by Munger English Sports Management. In addition to a $2MM…

  • Tigers Sign Colt Keith To Six-Year Contract Extension

    Headshot for Colt Keith

The Detroit Tigers signed infield prospect Colt Keith to a six-year, $28.64 million contract extension that runs through the 2029 season on Sunday, followed by club options for the 2030, 2031 and 2032 seasons. If all of Keith's options are exercised, the 22-year-old would make $82 million over nine years, which would buy out all of his arbitration years. The Tigers are locking up one of their young prospects early for the long term. Keith is Detroit's top position-player prospect and hit an impressive 13 home runs with an .890 OPS in 67 games after his promotion to Triple-A Toledo. His big extension likely secures him a spot on the team's Opening Day roster in 2024. Keith's defense is nothing to write home about, but if he continues to hit the ball hard like he did in the minors, the Tigers will find a spot for him in their lineup.
