    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder/designated hitter Alec Burleson (thumb) left Tuesday's contest against the Milwaukee Brewers early after fracturing his left thumb, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The 24-year-old continues to hit in the middle of the order despite slashing just .244/.300/.390 with eight bombs, 36 RBI, 34 runs, and three steals across 107 games. Fantasy managers should consider Burleson day-to-day for now and check back in for more updates.

  • Cardinals Notes: O'Neill, Yepez, Romero, Flaherty

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

The Cardinals announced this morning that they have placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day injured list with a right foot sprain. First baseman Juan Yepez was recalled from Triple-A in the corresponding move. The sprain presumably brings O’Neill’s 2023 campaign to a close, given the limited time remaining on the regular season schedule. Despite…

  • Tyler O'Neill Back In Action Tuesday

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill is back in the starting lineup Tuesday night against the Baltimore Orioles and left-hander John Means, who is making his first start back from Tommy John surgery. O'Neill didn't take part in his club's 12-5 series-opening loss on Monday but will take over in left field and hit sixth on Tuesday while Alec Burleson hits the bench. O'Neill has recovered from a slow start to produce a solid season thanks to an .840 OPS along with seven homers, 10 doubles, and four stolen bases across 38 games in the season's second half. He's up to a .242 average along with nine homers, five stolen bases, and a .750 OPS across 68 games as he also missed significant time with a shoulder injury earlier in the season.

  • Alec Burleson Sitting Against Lefty

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson is not in the starting lineup on Monday against the Oakland Athletics and left-hander JP Sears. In his absence, Luken Baker will make the start at designated hitter and will bat eighth in the order against Sears. The 24-year-old left-handed-hitting Burleson will continue to sit against most southpaw, as he's currently hitting just .182 (4-for-22) against them with none of his eight home runs on the year. Overall, Burleson is slashing .244/.292/.413 with eight home runs, 15 doubles, a triple, 27 RBI and 27 runs scored in 264 plate appearances and 83 games in just his second season in the majors.

  • Dylan Carlson Out A Couple Of Weeks

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dylan Carlson (oblique) is expected to be out for "at least a couple of weeks" with a strained left oblique. Carlson said he felt something while taking a swing during Wednesday's win over the Rays. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since and likely won't return until September. He has struggled this season, slashing .219/.318/.333 with five home runs, 27 RBI, 27 runs, and three stolen bases over 76 games in 2023. Alec Burleson should see an uptick in playing time while Carlson is sidelined. Burleson is slashing .244/.292/.413 over 261 plate appearances in 2023.

  • Tyler O'Neill Scratched On Tuesday

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O'Neill (knee) has been scratched from the starting lineup ahead of Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with left-knee tightness. O'Neill was able to take batting practice and tracked fly balls in the outfield before the game, but he was scratched from the lineup. He's listed as day-to-day for now. In his absence, Alec Burleson will move into the lineup and bat sixth versus right-hander Zach Eflin.

  • Alec Burleson, Dylan Carlson Being Heavily Discussed In Trade Talks

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielders Alec Burleson and Dylan Carlson are the two names being most discussed by the club in trade talks following their deal of Paul DeJong to the Toronto Blue Jays. It was been widely known the Cardinals are full-blown sellers amidst a disappointing season while the club has also shipped left-hander Jordan Montgomery to the Texas Rangers and reliever Jordan Hicks to the Blue Jays. Both Burleson and Carlson have multiple years of club control attached to them, meaning a return for the young outfielders would need to be rather significant. Burleson, 24, is hitting .239 with six homers and a .685 OPS in 74 games while Carlson, also 24, is hitting .230 with five homers, three stolen bases, and a .673 OPS across 69 contests on the campaign.
