  • Alec Burleson Hitting The Pine Monday

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson will be on the bench when his club kicks off a series with the Padres and right-hander Matt Waldron. The 25-year-old wnt 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts in Sunday's series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers while Matt Carpenter will re-enter the lineup and take designated hitter duties from Burleson. It wasn't a great rookie year for Burleson in 2023 as he hit .244 with eight home runs, three steals, and a .690 OPS across 107 appearances, production that graded out 11% below the league average, as per his 89 wRC+. He is 2-for-14 with a double to begin this season but has also struck out in five of his 14 plate appearances, good for an elevated 35.7% K% but he also posted a tiny 13% K% in the 2023 campaign.

  • Lars Nootbaar Won't Be Ready For Opening Day

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Lars Nootbaar (ribs) is going to open the regular season on the injured list. This was expected, but Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol confirmed the news on Friday. The left-handed slugger continues working his way back from fractures in his ribcage. At the moment, it looks like Alec Burleson is the favorite to handle left field in the absence of Nootbaar. Burleson doesn't hold a ton of value, but could be a possible deep league option or maybe worth a shot in NL-only formats.

  • Offseason In Review: St. Louis Cardinals

    Headshot for Nolan Arenado

The Cardinals are looking to prove that last year was a fluke. They bolstered their pitching staff to help them bounce back in 2024, but did they do enough? • Alec Burleson To Get Starter Reps In Left Field

    Headshot for Alec Burleson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Alec Burleson will get starter reps in left field while Lars Nootbaar (ribs) remains out of the lineup. Nootbaar's status for Opening Day is in doubt as Burleson could open the season for the club in left field. The 25-year-old hit .244 with eight homers, three stolen bases, and a .690 OPS across 107 appearances in the 2025 season, production that graded out 11% below the league average, as per his 89 wRC+. Even with fellow outfielder Tyler O'Neill traded to the Boston Red Sox this offseason, Burleson's playing time will take a hit once Nootbaar and Tommy Edman (wrist) return from their respective injuries. He remains off the fantasy radar but could be a decent short-term add if he's an everyday left fielder to open the season.
