  • Paul Goldschmidt, Masyn Winn Resting Against Phillies

    Headshot for Paul Goldschmidt

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and shortstop Masyn Winn are both getting a breather on Wednesday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Alec Burleson is playing first base and batting sixth, while Brandon Crawford is at the 6 and is hitting seventh against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. The 36-year-old Goldschmidt could use the break after putting up a weak .544 OPS to begin the 2024 season. Meanwhile, Winn has been consistent so far in his first full season as the Cardinals' starting shortstop, going 11-for-33 (.333) with a double, triple, three RBI and a stolen base in 11 games. Neither Burleson nor Crawford will be very strong DFS plays against Nola. Burleson is hitting .167 with an RBI in six at-bats against Nola, while Crawford is hitting .200 with three RBI in 15 career at-bats.

  • Masyn Winn Taking The Day Off Wednesday

    Headshot for Masyn Winn

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn and outfielder Alec Burleson are both out of the starting lineup on Wednesday for the series finale against the San Diego Padres. Brandon Crawford is getting the start at shortstop and is batting seventh, while Brendan Donovan is leading off and playing left field against Padres right-hander Joe Musgrove. Winn has looked good so far in his first full season as the team's primary shortstop, going 5-for-16 (.313) with an RBI, stolen base and two runs scored in 19 plate appearances through the first five games of the season. Donovan is the much more intriguing DFS play on Wednesday over the veteran Crawford, and he's picked up seven hits in his first 24 at-bats on the year with a home run, six RBI and six runs scored.

The Cardinals are looking to prove that last year was a fluke. They bolstered their pitching staff to help them bounce back in 2024, but did they do enough? • Masyn Winn Still The Team's Starter At Shortstop

    Headshot for Masyn Winn

The St. Louis Cardinals have told young infielder Masyn Winn that he's still in line to be the starter at shortstop in 2024 despite the signing of veteran shortstop Brandon Crawford on Monday. President of baseball operations John Mozeliak said "this is Masyn's job." Crawford, who has been a liability on offense the last two years, is merely a veteran insurance policy for the 21-year-old Winn. The youngster hasn't looked very good so far in spring training, though, and he also hit just .172/.230/.238 in 37 games in his major-league debut with the Cardinals in 2023. The former second-rounder in 2020 is still pretty young, though, and he did hit .288 with 18 homers and 17 steals in 105 games for Triple-A Memphis. We are expecting better results in his first full season in the majors, and his ability to make contact and his speed on the basepaths stand out the most.

  • Cardinals Sign Brandon Crawford

    Headshot for Brandon Crawford

The St. Louis Cardinals signed free-agent shortstop Brandon Crawford to an undisclosed deal on Monday, according to league sources. The three-time All-Star with the San Francisco Giants is expected to serve as the backup to 21-year-old rookie shortstop Masyn Winn while the team awaits further clarity on Tommy Edman's recovery from wrist surgery. Crawford spent the previous 13 seasons in the Bay Area, playing a key role in the team's 2012 and 2014 World Series championships. He was an All-Star as recently as 2021, but his performance started to decline in 2022, and he appeared in just 93 games last year due to various injuries and finished with a meager .194/.273/.314 slash line. The 37-year-old is a good defender but can't be counted on for offensive production at this point, and the 2024 season could easily be Crawford's last as a pro.

  • Masyn Winn Looks Strong In Return

    Headshot for Masyn Winn

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn (back) returned to the starting lineup after missing the first few spring contests. The young infielder looked ready to go as he went 3-for-3 with a double and a steal during Sunday's game against the Houston Astros. It doesn't appear that the back tightness was impacting his performance at all. Winn will probably find himself towards the bottom of the lineup to begin the season. He might not be a must-have player right away, but Winn is someone to keep on the radar.

  • Masyn Winn Resumes Full Activities

    Headshot for Masyn Winn

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn (upper body) resumed full baseball activities on Friday after being held out of batting practice for two consecutive days due to tightness. The 21-year-old struggled through limited big-league action (37 games) as a rookie last year, but perhaps he'll benefit from additional reps as a projected starter heading into the 2024 campaign. He remains an appealing player at the plate while boasting impressive defensive skills (including a very strong, powerful arm).

  • Masyn Winn Sidelined From Batting Practice

    Headshot for Masyn Winn

St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn (upper body) has missed batting practice for two consecutive days due to tightness, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. Although any sort of injury this early in Spring Training can trigger alarms, Goold notes that Winn "expects to be back Friday." The 21-year-old struggled through limited big-league action (37 games) as a rookie last year, but he remains an appealing player at the plate with impressive defensive skills (including a very strong, powerful arm).
