  • David Peterson Throws On Thursday

New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson (foot) was able to face live hitters during a batting practice session on Thursday. This is good news after Peterson took a comebacker off the foot last weekend. The hope is that he won't suffer any setbacks and can get back on the mound soon. He's expected to compete with Tylor Megill for a spot in the starting rotation. The Mets are going to be without Jose Quintana (rib) to begin the season, so someone will need to step up.

  • The Mets' Options If Jose Quintana Misses Time

The Mets entered spring training with a deep but revamped rotation. Gone were longtime ace Jacob deGrom and steady right-handers Chris Bassitt and Taijuan Walker. In their place, the Mets signed future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, NPB star Kodai Senga and veteran lefty Jose Quintana, who had a resurgent campaign between the Pirates and…

  • David Peterson Considered Day-To-Day

New York Mets starting pitcher David Peterson (foot) is considered day-to-day after getting hit by a comebacker during Saturday's Spring Training contest. The left-hander underwent X-rays and had a CT scan done as well. Peterson was able to avoid any fractures and is dealing with a left foot contusion. The 27-year-old will probably rest for a few days, but should return at some point next week.

  • Mets To Use Six-Man Rotation At Times In 2023

The New York Mets added pitchers Justin Verlander, Kodai Senga and Jose Quintana this offseason to address their starting-rotation needs. It puts internal options like David Peterson and Tylor Megill on the outside looking in, but the Mets are expected to use a six-man rotation at times this year. They're likely to add a sixth starter to the mix anytime in the schedule where the Mets play on more than 10 straight days. New York's slated Opening Day rotation has an average age of 36, and Senga is used to pitching just once a week in Japan. In addition to Peterson and Megill, Joey Lucchesi and Elieser Hernandez could be in the running to join the rotation when the Mets go to six arms. Verlander and Max Scherzer haven't pitched 14 times on regular rest since the 2019 season due to injuries.
