  • Edward Cabrera Fans 10 In No-Decision

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera really dazzled in his first start of 2024 on Monday against the San Francisco Giants, giving up just one run on five hits while walking one and striking out 10 in six innings to pick up a quality start and no-decision. The 26-year-old began the 2024 campaign on the injured list due to a right-shoulder injury, but he surely didn't look like a pitcher coming off an injury in this one. It was the third time he's had double-digit strikeouts in a game in his young career, and it was nice to see him pounding the strike zone all night. Cabrera went 7-7 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 66 walks and a career-high 118 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings in 2023 and should be immediately scooped up off the waiver wire in fantasy leagues if he's available after his performance Monday night.

  • Marlins To Place Jake Burger On Injured List, Activate Edward Cabrera

    Headshot for Jake Burger

The Marlins are placing third baseman Jake Burger on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique injury, tweets Christina De Nicola of MLB.com. She adds that Burger likened the discomfort he experienced to a 2023 oblique injury where he only missed the 10-day minimum. The team hasn't provided a timetable for his return...

  • A.J. Puk Scratched, Edward Cabrera Activated

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins left-hander A.J. Puk has been scratched from his scheduled start on Monday against the visiting San Francisco Giants due to an illness while Edward Cabrera (shoulder) will be activated from the injured list and will start in Puk's place on Monday. Puk's next start has been pushed back to Wednesday. It hasn't been a great start to Puk's season after winning a rotation job coming out of spring training as he sports a 5.91 ERA through three starts and just 10 2/3 innings of work. More concerning is his eye-popping 14 walks in those 10 2/3 frames with just eight strikeouts in that time. As for Cabrera, he has also struggled with control in his Triple-A rehab as he walked 14.8% of the hitters he faced in three starts, although he was able to escape with a 0.71 ERA.

  • Edward Cabrera Scheduled For Minor League Start On Wednesday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is scheduled for a minor league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday. Cabrera is slated for six innings, or about 90 pitches, in the start. This will be the 25-year-old's third rehab start and, if all goes well, it's likely he will be taken off the injured list and added to the Marlins active roster. "I anticipate him being back in the rotation at some point soon," said Marlins manager Skip Schumaker. The struggling Marlins will surely welcome him back with open arms as their starters currently hold a 4.75 ERA and need as much help as possible to turn around their 2-11 start.

  • Edward Cabrera's Next Rehab Start Set For Wednesday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) will make his next minor-league rehab start with Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday and is scheduled for five innings or 80 pitches. In Cabrera's last rehab start, he was able to go four innings last Friday. If the 25-year-old is able to avoid any setbacks with his right shoulder on Wednesday, there's a good chance the Marlins will activate him from the injured list in order to make his 2024 debut. The Marlins are getting some much-needed rotation reinforcements soon in Cabrera and left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) with both Sandy Alcantara (elbow) and Eury Perez (elbow) out for the entire season. Garrett is the more attractive waiver-wire pickup in deep-mixed fantasy leagues, but Cabrera could also be useful for pitching depth if he can get his command under control.

  • Edward Cabrera Set For Rehab Start Friday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is set to throw four innings in a minor-league rehab game on Friday with Triple-A Jacksonville. The Marlins got bad news on Thursday that young righty Eury Perez (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery and miss all of 2024. The good news is the Fish have rotation reinforcements coming in Cabrera and left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder). Cabrera threw three scoreless innings on 43 pitches in his first rehab start with Jacksonville last Sunday, so he's slightly ahead of Garrett, who will be making his first rehab start this Sunday. If the 25-year-old Cabrera looks good in his second rehab start on Friday, the Marlins could decide to activate him from the 15-day injured to make his 2024 big-league debut next week.

  • Edward Cabrera Scheduled For Rehab Start On Sunday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Miami Marlins' Triple-A club, on Sunday. The 25-year-old is only expected to throw three innings. Cabrera was diagnosed with a shoulder impingement on March 12th and was placed on the team's 15-day injured list. No timetable has been set for his return, but given that the rehab start goes well, he could be looking to return to a Marlins rotation that's missing key pieces. Cabrera will continue to ramp up his workload and likely need a few more rehab starts before returning to the mound.

  • Edward Cabrera, Braxton Garrett Throw Bullpens

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) and left-hander Braxton Garrett (shoulder) both threw bullpen sessions in camp on Wednesday. Cabrera's bullpen consisted of around 20 pitches (all fastballs), while Garrett got up and down three times and is scheduled to throw a live batting practice session on Sunday. Cabrera, 25, threw for the first time since being diagnosed with a right-shoulder impingement last week. He is going to start the season on the injured list and will need several more bullpens before facing live hitters again. Garrett, 26, also won't be ready for Opening Day but could make his 2024 debut before the end of April. The Marlins' starting rotation is really limping to the starting line this year with Cabrera, Garrett and Eury Perez (elbow, finger) all ailing.

  • Max Meyer An Option For Opening Day Rotation

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said that he isn't ruling out right-hander Max Meyer for the team's Opening Day starting rotation given all the starting pitcher injuries in spring training. "I think everyone's on the table," Schumaker said. Bryan Hoeing, who was projected to be a multi-inning arm out of the bullpen, is also a candidate for the season-opening rotation. The 25-year-old Meyer was sent to minor-league camp earlier this week, but the Fish could call him back with Eury Perez (elbow), Braxton Garrett (shoulder) and Edward Cabrera (shoulder) all ailing with Opening Day coming up quickly in the rearview mirror. Meyer is the team's top pitching prospect and has thrown seven scoreless innings in Grapefruit League action, making him an intriguing stash candidate in deep-mixed leagues. However, his 2024 upside will be limited after he missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery.

  • Edward Cabrera Playing Catch Friday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera is playing catch on Friday as he recovers from a confirmed right shoulder impingement. An MRI didn't reveal any structural damage in the 25-year-old's shoulder as the issue appears to be more of the day-to-day variety. Cabrera worked to a 4.24 ERA across 22 outings (20 starts) last season and punched out a hearty 27.2% of the hitters he faced. At the same time, he also walked a bloated 15.2% of the batters he faced while he sports a career 14% BB% in 197 2/3 frames at the big-league level. Cabrera has the stuff to be a fantasy asset due to a 26.2% K% in his big-league career but if his control doesn't improve his fantasy value will be capped.

  • Edward Cabrera Has Right-Shoulder Impingement

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (shoulder) has been diagnosed with a right-shoulder impingement after undergoing an MRI exam. "Day-to-day thing," said manager Skip Schumaker. Cabrera has avoided any structural damage in his shoulder, but he also missed around a month in 2023 with a similar injury, so fantasy managers shouldn't just assume that the 25-year-old hurler will be able to pitch when the regular season kicks off in a couple of weeks. We should know more later this week on whether Cabrera will need to go on the injured list to start the year. In his third year in the big leagues in 2023, Cabrera went 7-7 with a 4.24 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with 118 K's and 66 walks in 99 2/3 innings. Injuries and walks are concerning, but when Cabrera is on like he was to close out last year, he has the ability to be a fantasy asset with a career 26.2% strikeout rate.

  • Edward Cabrera To Undergo MRI

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo an MRI, according to manager Skip Schumaker. The right-hander was supposed to take the mound on Sunday, but didn't due to shoulder tightness. The organization said that it was a precautionary move, but it makes sense that they want to do imaging as well. Cabrera was off to a hot spring, so hopefully, it's just a minor setback for him. Fantasy managers will have to check back later after the imaging is done.

  • Edward Cabrera Exits Early On Sunday

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

Miami Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera departed his Sunday start before throwing a pitch due to right shoulder tightness. He finished his warmup tosses before trainers came out to evaluate him and he ultimately walked off the field with what the team is calling precautionary reasons. The 25-year-old has yet to allow a run across five Grapefruit League games this spring, striking out five against zero walks in that time. After he worked to a 2.22 ERA across five starts at Triple-A in the 2023 season, Cabrera posted a 4.24 ERA in 22 outings (20 starts) with the Marlins a season ago, punching out a healthy 27.2% of the hitters he faced in that time. More word on his status should be made available in the coming days but Cabrera remains a solid fantasy asset for the 2024 season.

  • Pirates, Marlins Discussing Edward Cabrera Trade

    Headshot for Edward Cabrera

In an attempt to bolster their starting rotation, the Pittsburgh Pirates have reportedly been in contact with the Miami Marlins to discuss a trade involving starting pitcher Edward Cabrera, per Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Jason Mackey. Such a deal would involve the Pirates sending one of three infielders: Liover Peguero, Nick Gonzales, or Ji Hwan Bae. Cabrera has shown plenty of strikeout upside but a lack of control so far in his big-league career, going 7-7 with a 4.24 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, 27.2% strikeout rate, and 15.2% walk rate in 99 2/3 innings pitched in 2023. From a fantasy perspective, a Cabrera trade from the Marlins, who have had a knack for developing young pitchers in recent history to the Pirates would be a hit on his fantasy value.
