  • Luis Campusano Returns To The Lineup

    Headshot for Luis Campusano

San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano (groin) is back in the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 24-year-old was hit in the groin by a foul ball during Sunday's game. As a result, Campusano wasn't in Monday's starting lineup, but did appear as a pinch hitter. He'll bat sixth and serve as the catcher versus right-hander Michael Lorenzen on Tuesday.

  • Luis Campusano Activated, Rougned Odor DFA'd, Austin Nola Optioned

    Headshot for Luis Campusano

The San Diego Padres activated catcher Luis Campusano (thumb) from the 60-day injured list on Tuesday. In corresponding moves, the Padres designated infielder Rougned Odor for assignment and optioned catcher Austin Nola and infielder/outfielder Brandon Dixon to Triple-A El Paso. Campusano had surgery to fix a torn ligament in his left thumb on May 12, but he'll now return to split playing time at catcher and designated hitter with Gary Sanchez. The 24-year-old has hit just .198 with three homers in 35 big-league games so far, so he's not an immediate add in two-catcher formats. Odor will likely clear waivers after hitting .210 with four homers and 18 RBI in 59 games for the Friars. Nola will go down to the farm after going just 19-for-130 (.146) in 52 games in 2023 at the major-league level.

  • Luis Campusano Rehabbing At Triple-A

    Headshot for Luis Campusano

San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano (thumb) has played in two minor-league rehab games for Triple-A El Paso, going 3-for-6 with a double and two runs scored. That came after he went 2-for-10 with two doubles and two RBI in three games at the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League earlier this month. The 24-year-old backstop is attempting to return after having left-thumb surgery, and he could rejoin the major-league roster early in the second half of the season, which begins this Friday. Gary Sanchez has been a good find for the Friars, but Campusano should at least be an upgrade over the slumping Austin Nola, who has hit just .143 in 150 plate appearances in 2023.

  • Luis Campusano Seeing Game Action Again

    Headshot for Luis Campusano

San Diego Padres backstop Luis Campusano (thumb) appeared as the designated hitter on Tuesday in the Arizona Complex league, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles. There's a chance that the former second-rounder can return around the All-Star break after undergoing surgery to repair a left thumb sprain he suffered in April. Across just seven games this season, Campusano hit .238 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. The Padres could use his bat behind the plate, as both Austin Nola and Gary Sanchez have their limits at the dish. However, the 24-year-old remains a better dynasty option until he proves he can hit big-league pitching.
