Orioles Notes: Rodriguez, Means, Santander
Orioles fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of top pitching prospect Grayson Rodriguez, who’s squarely in the mix for a spot in the team’s Opening Day rotation. That shouldn’t be considered a foregone conclusion, however, Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun writes. The O’s are planning to manage Rodriguez’s innings count this season anyhow,…

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher prospect Grayson Rodriguez tossed 2 2/3 innings on Tuesday versus the Minnesota Twins. The big hurler allowed three hits, one run, two walks and recorded four strikeouts on the afternoon. The 23-year-old had a phenomenal 2022 campaign going 6-2 with a 2.62 ERA alongside 109 strikeouts in 75 1/3 innings. With the exception of one outing in High-A and two in Double-A, Rodriguez spent the year in Triple-A. Rodriguez was on the cusp of being called up last season, but suffered a Grade 2 lat strain that sidelined him for most of the second half. Now healthy, Rodriguez is being given every chance to earn a spot in the rotation this spring. Even if he earns a rotation spot, the Orioles could still limit him throughout points of the season, but he will be worth rostering in all formats with his sky high potential and strikeout ability.

Grayson Rodriguez Expected To Be In Opening Day Rotation
Baltimore Orioles general manager Mike Elias said that he expects pitching prospect Grayson Rodriguez to open the 2023 regular season in the starting rotation. Elias also thinks outfield prospect Colton Cowser will make his MLB debut at some point this year. Rodriguez is Baltimore's No. 2 prospect and seventh overall in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline. It's likely that the 23-year-old right-hander would have debuted last year, but a Grade 2 lat strain set him back. Rodriguez was fantastic once he returned from a three-month absence at Triple-A Norfolk, showing that he doesn't have much left to prove on the farm. He'll likely face workload restrictions in 2023, but Rodriguez should have an immediate fantasy impact in all leagues if he stays healthy.
