7:03pm: Detroit officially selected Hanifee onto the big league roster. Brendan White was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. To create a 40-man roster spot, the Tigers transferred Riley Greene — who underwent elbow surgery — to the 60-day injured list. 7:40am: The Tigers are on the verge of selecting the contract of right-hander Brenan Hanifee,…

  • Riley Greene Should Be Fine To Start 2024

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) is expected to be ready to begin the 2024 season after having Tommy John surgery on his right, non-throwing arm Wednesday. Greene is an intriguing player for fantasy and one to watch heading into next year. If he is indeed cleared to play to start the year, he could very well be a contributor in five categories.

  • Riley Greene To Undergo Season-Ending Elbow Surgery

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Outfielder Riley Greene will undergo what the Tigers described as a “surgical intervention” on his ailing right elbow tomorrow, according to a team announcement.  Greene has been on the 10-day injured list due to elbow inflammation since September 2, though today’s announcement referred to the injury as a sprain. The exact nature of the procedure…

  • Riley Greene To Undergo Elbow Surgery

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) will undergo elbow surgery on Wednesday, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. The youngster has been out since early September after experiencing elbow inflammation and will now officially miss the rest of the season. Greene broke out in limited action, slashing .288/.349/.447 with 11 homers, 51 RBI, 37 RBI, and seven steals over 99 games. The former first-round pick will head into 2024 as a key piece of the Tigers starting lineup, and he has a chance to contribute in all five categories if healthy.

  • Riley Greene To Seek Additional Opinions

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) was placed on the 10-day injured list earlier this month. The 22-year-old remains without a timetable to return and could very well be done for the 2023 season. The left-handed slugger is reportedly seeking additional medical opinions on his inflamed elbow. It sounds like Greene wants more information on how to proceed with the recovery process. The Tigers aren't in the playoff picture, so they will likely sit Greene through the rest of the season. Hopefully, Greene will be able to recover and contribute at the beginning of the 2024 campaign.

  • Riley Greene Placed On Injured List

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday. The 22-year-old suffered a right elbow injury while making a catch in the outfield during Friday's contest. The team will now shut down Greene for at least a week to let the swelling in his elbow go down. This is a shame considering Greene was having a solid season at the plate. He's slashing .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs and 37 RBI in 99 games. Parker Meadows, Akil Baddoo, and Kerry Carpenter will cover the outfield for the Tigers during Saturday's game against the Chicago White Sox. Tyler Nevin has been recalled with Greene on the IL, but Nevin doesn't offer much upside with the bat.

  • Riley Greene Could Return Sunday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) jammed his right elbow on a diving catch in the fifth inning in Friday night's game against the Chicago White Sox and was removed as a precaution. Greene is considered day-to-day. He won't play on Saturday but could return on Sunday. "Things are pointing in a positive direction," manager A.J. Hinch said. It appears the 22-year-old dodged a bullet with this injury and he should be back to close out the series in Chicago. In just his second major-league season, Greene is hitting a strong .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, four triples, 37 RBI, seven stolen bases and 51 runs scored in 99 games as Detroit's regular center fielder.

  • Riley Greene Collects Two RBI Friday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene went 2-for-3 at the plate as his team defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Friday. Greene also drove in two RBI and swiped a bag in the contest. Unfortunately, Greene had to leave the game in the seventh frame due to landing hard while making a spectacular grab in the outfield. Fortunately it doesn't appear to be a severe injury, and he should be considered day-to-day. This season, the 22-year-old is batting .288/.349/.447 with 11 dingers and 37 RBI in 378 trips to the plate.

  • Riley Greene Getting Rare Breather Tuesday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is not in the starting lineup for Tuesday night's contest against the Chicago Cubs and left-hander Drew Smyly. The Tigers are stacking right-handed bats against the veteran southpaw on Tuesday, which affords them an opportunity to get their prized youngster off his feet, at least to start the contest. The 2019 first-round pick has broke out in a big way in his sophomore season, hitting .299 with 11 home runs, six stolen bases, and a .831 OPS across 89 appearances on the season while missing time with a stress reaction in his fibula in June and July. Kerry Carpenter will take over in right field for Greene who played a position other than center field for the first time in his career on Monday.

  • Riley Greene Rests Against Southpaw

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is out of the team's starting lineup on Friday against left-hander Chris Sale and the Boston Red Sox. Matt Vierling is getting the starting nod in center field on Friday and will hit leadoff for the Tigers against Sale, who is making his first start back from the injured list. The veteran left-hander will only throw four innings in his return. Greene is actually hitting .307 (23-for-75) against left-handed pitchers in 2023, but none of his 10 home runs have come against them. The 22-year-old left-handed hitter missed some time earlier this year due to injury, but when he's been healthy he's been excellent, slashing .301/.365/.474 with an .839 OPS, 10 long balls, 27 RBI, six stolen bases and 45 runs in 306 at-bats as the team's starting center fielder.

  • Riley Greene Sitting Out Game 2 Of Doubleheader

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is out of the starting lineup for Game 2 of Thursday's doubleheader against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Greene will sit out the second game on Thursday after going hitless in four at-bats in Game 1 with two strikeouts in the team's 6-0 loss. In his place, Matt Vierling will get the start in center field and will bat leadoff against Angels left-hander Patrick Sandoval. Coming into Thursday's doubleheader, the 22-year-old Greene was hitting a strong .315/.379/.469 with an .847 OPS, seven home runs, 12 doubles, three triples, 23 RBI, six stolen bases and 39 runs scored in 66 games (280 plate appearances). He missed some time earlier this year with a leg injury, but he's an everyday player with a chance to make some noise for a non-contender the rest of the way.

  • Riley Greene Retreats To The Bench

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene is taking a day off on Tuesday as the team battles the Kansas City Royals. Matt Vierling will take over in center field and will hit second in the batting order on Tuesday against Royals left-hander Daniel Lynch. Greene missed significant time this year with a leg injury, but he's back now and will remain Detroit's starting center fielder the rest of the way. He also has a strong .295/.365/.442 slash line with an .807 OPS, six home runs, 20 RBI, six stolen bases and 33 runs scored in 224 at-bats. Greene should be rostered in all fantasy leagues. Vierling is in an enviable lineup spot in a good matchup, but he also has just one hit in 15 at-bats in his last five games for Detroit.

  • Tigers Plan To Activate Riley Greene Saturday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

The Detroit Tigers plan is to activate outfielder Riley Greene (leg) from the 10-day injured list on Saturday, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Greene is expected to serve as the designated hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays and right-hander Kevin Gausman. The 22-year-old will be returning from a five-week absence due to a stress reaction in his left fibula. He should be swooped up off the waiver wire in all fantasy leagues where he's available. Greene went 6-for-12 with a home run and a double on his three-game minor-league rehab assignment and was hitting an impressive .296 (60-for-203) with five home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 18 RBI, six stolen bases and 29 runs scored in 52 games played before his injury as Detroit's regular center fielder.

  • Riley Greene Could Return This Weekend

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (leg) will play in the outfield in a minor-league rehab game with Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, and he could return from the 10-day injured list this weekend. Greene is attempting to return from a stress fracture in his left fibula, and he's gone 5-for-9 so far in his first two rehab games for Toledo. The 22-year-old second-year player will return to starting center-field duties for the Tigers when he's deemed fully healthy, and he should be rostered in all fantasy leagues for his ability to contribute in multiple categories. Before his injury, Greene was slashing .296/.362/.443 with an .805 OPS, five home runs, nine doubles, three triples, 18 RBI, six stolen bases and 29 runs scored in 52 games.

  • Riley Greene Begins Rehab Assignment

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (leg) started his minor-league rehab assignment on Monday with Triple-A Toledo. Greene has been out since May 30 after suffering a stress fracture in his left fibula, but he's getting closer to a return to the major-league level. The 22-year-old will take this week to get back up to speed in minor-league contests, and barring any setbacks, he should be ready to rock for the start of the second half of the season after next week's All-Star break. When healthy, Greene is Detroit's starting center fielder. He should be rostered more than the 55 percent that he currently is in Yahoo leagues. Before his injury, Greene was hitting an impressive .296/.362/.443 with an .805 OPS, five home runs, 18 RBI, six steals and 29 runs scored in 52 games in his second MLB campaign.
