  • Riley Greene Moves Into Leadoff Spot Friday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene will hit out of the leadoff spot for the first time this season when the club hosts the first of three games versus the rival Minnesota Twins on Friday. It's been an interesting season so far for the 23-year-old. While he's hitting just .205, Greene has also slugged three homers to go along with a double while walking in 17% of his 47 trips to the plate. The former first-round pick hit .288 with 11 homers and seven stolen bases in 99 games last season as it was a great step forward before a stress fracture in his leg followed by Tommy John surgery cut his season short. Greene firmly remains on the dynasty radar as a difference maker for fantasy managers.

  • Riley Greene Goes Yard In First Game Of Doubleheader

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader with the New York Mets. The 394-foot blast was Greene's second homer of the season. The 23-year-old has dealt with health issues over the last two campaigns but his power/speed blend gives him intriguing upside for fantasy managers. Greene has not had an electrifying start to his year, carrying a .143 average through 21 at-bats. Nevertheless, he remains a solid No. 4 outfielder with the potential to climb higher as the Tigers offense continues to seek consistency.

  • Riley Greene Playing Outfield On Tuesday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) is starting in right field and is batting leadoff for Tuesday's Grapefruit League contest against the Toronto Blue Jays. Greene made his spring training debut on Monday as the designated hitter but will now return to the outfield for the first time in game action since having Tommy John surgery on his right (non-throwing) elbow last September. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter looked even better in his second major-league season in 2023 before suffering his season-ending elbow injury. Greene slashed .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs, 19 doubles, four triples, 37 RBI, seven stolen bases and 51 runs scored in 99 games played. If he can cut down on his strikeouts and make some more contact, he'll have even more upside for fantasy managers as a No. 3 outfielder.

  • Riley Greene To DH On Monday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) is tentatively scheduled to serve as the designated hitter on Monday for the Grapefruit League game against the Houston Astros. He'll then return to the outfield on Tuesday. Greene is recovering from Tommy John surgery on his right (non-throwing elbow) last September. He took live batting practice earlier this week and "didn't even think about my arm." The 23-year-old should be fully healthy by Opening Day and will be the Tigers' starting center fielder again in 2024. There is a bit of swing and miss to his game, but Greene still managed to hit a strong .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs, 37 RBI, seven stolen bases and 51 runs scored in 378 at-bats in 2023 before being shut down with his elbow injury. He's a solid No. 3 outfield target with upside in fantasy drafts.

  • Riley Greene Faces Live Pitching Tuesday

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) faced live pitching in camp on Tuesday for the first time since last September. "I didn't even think about my arm. I feel normal...I wasn't nervous. I wasn't breathing hard. I was just ready to get in the box," Greene said. His 2023 season ended early due to Tommy John surgery, but the fact that it was to his right (non-throwing) arm means that Greene isn't facing restrictions at spring training and should be ready to go for Opening Day in 2024. The 23-year-old left-handed hitter could be eased into the Grapefruit League schedule this spring, but he should be good to go for fantasy managers on Opening Day as an upside No. 3 outfielder as Detroit's starting center fielder.

  • Riley Greene To Face Live Pitching This Week

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) is scheduled to face live pitching this week and is completing all other baseball activities at spring training. Greene is recovering from a right-elbow sprain that required Tommy John surgery last year, and he might be initially held back from participating in Grapefruit League games in camp. However, barring a setback, he should be ready for Opening Day as Detroit's starting center fielder. The good news is that the surgery was to the 23-year-old's right (non-throwing) arm. Greene struck out a lot in his second big-league season in 2023 but still managed to hit .288 (109-for-378) before his injury with 11 home runs, 37 RBI and seven steals in 99 games played. He should be considered an intriguing target as a No. 3 fantasy outfielder with upside in 2024.

  • Riley Greene Expects To Be Ready For Grapefruit League Games

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) said he expects to play in Grapefruit League games once the spring schedule begins. He also said the Tigers are planning a blend of designated hitter and outfield days for Greene. The 23-year-old credited his offseason rehab work with trainer Ben Delacruz for his improved flexibility and running form. He's five months removed from having Tommy John surgery, but it was on his right (non-throwing) elbow, which should allow him to be ready to roll on Opening Day for the Tigers. It remains to be seen how the injury will affect Greene as a hitter early on in 2024, though. The former first-rounder strikes out frequently, but he still managed to hit .288 (109-for-378) with 11 homers, 37 RBI and seven steals in 99 games last year before his injury. Greene would be a great fit for fantasy managers as a No. 4 outfielder with upside.

  • Riley Greene Feeling Good

    Headshot for Riley Greene

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene (elbow) said he's feeling good after starting to swing a bat for the first time since having Tommy John surgery. "The first couple of swings I took when I started my hitting progression went really good. Didn't feel a thing. It really feels normal now," Greene said. The 23-year-old has been swinging a bat now for around a month and is almost five months removed from the surgery on his right elbow. Expect him to be eased into action in spring training, but barring any setbacks, the young outfielder should be ready to go for Detroit on Opening Day. Greene hit .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs, 37 RBI, seven stolen bases and 51 runs scored in 99 games in 2023 before going under the knife. There is a lot of swing and miss to his game, but all his other metrics look solid and he should be Detroit's starting center fielder in 2024 with plenty of upside.

  • Akil Baddoo At Risk Of Not Making Opening Day Roster

    Headshot for Akil Baddoo

Detroit Tigers outfielder Akil Baddoo may or may not make the team's Opening Day roster, according to Evan Woodberry of MLive. Baddoo put together a poor 2023 season, slashing .218/.310/.372 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI, and 14 stolen bases over 312 at-bats. The organization is high on Parker Meadows, who impressed with his defensive ability and speed on the basepaths in a small sample size of 37 games last season. The team could begin the season with Meadows at center field and Riley Greene and Matt Vierling occupying the corner outfield spots. That scenario doesn't leave room for Baddoo. He does have experience playing center field, however, so if Meadows were to struggle, he could fill in for him. The Detroit outfield should come into more focus as spring training gets underway, but for now, it looks like Baddoo could be on the outside looking in.
