  • Tigers Claim Freddy Pacheco, Place Tarik Skubal On 60-Day IL

The Tigers announced that they have claimed right-hander Freddy Pacheco off waivers from the Cardinals. To make room for him on their roster, left-hander Tarik Skubal has been placed on the 60-day injured list. Pacheco, 25 next month, is a relief pitcher who was added to the Cards’ roster in November of 2021 to protect…

  • Tigers Claim Freddy Pacheco Off Waivers From Cardinals

The Detroit Tigers claimed right-handed reliever Freddy Pacheco off waivers from the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday and optioned him to Triple-A Toledo. To make room on the 40-man roster, left-hander Tarik Skubal (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list. Pacheco has been dealing with elbow tightness this spring, which caused the Cardinals to outright him. The 24-year-old Venezuelan looked good in 50 combined relief appearances between Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in 2022, posting a 3.05 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 12 saves and 84 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. He'll need to work his way back to full health, but he could eventually become an option for the Tigers' bullpen this year.

  • Tarik Skubal Playing Catch Five Times A Week

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (elbow) is completing his throwing progression and is playing catch five times a week right now. It's good progress for Skubal, but he will still miss the first couple months of the 2023 campaign due to a left elbow strain. When he's ready to return, he will have a spot in Detroit's starting rotation waiting for him after he posted a career-best 3.52 ERA (2.96 FIP), 1.16 WHIP and 24.5 percent strikeout rate in 117 2/3 innings over 21 starts in his third MLB season. Skubal had surgery to fix a flexor tendon last year and could have his workload monitored this year, but he'll be a popular waiver-wire pickup in mixed leagues once he nears a return to the team around June.

  • Tarik Skubal Discusses Surgery Rehab

Left-hander Tarik Skubal had a nice breakout season in 2021, tossing 149 1/3 innings that year with a 4.34 ERA. He seemed to take a step forward in 2022, getting his ERA down to 3.52 through 21 starts. Unfortunately, he required flexor tendon surgery in August, wiping out the rest of that season and likely…

  • Tarik Skubal Throwing Off Flat Ground

Detroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (elbow) is making 40 flat-ground throws four times a week less than six months after having surgery to fix a flexor tendon in his left elbow last August. Barring any setbacks, the 26-year-old southpaw could gain clearance to work off of a mound during spring training. Despite the good progress, Skubal is a lock to open the 2023 season on the injured list for Detroit, but he should be able to return to the starting rotation around the middle of the season. Skubal went 7-8 with a career-best 3.52 ERA (2.96 FIP), 1.16 WHIP and career-low 24.5 percent strikeout rate in 117 2/3 innings over 21 starts in just his third major-league season with Detroit. Despite his slight drop in strikeout rate, Skubal was on his way to a breakout season last year before his injury, and he still has a bright future for the Tigers.

  • Players That Could Move To The 60-Day IL Once Spring Training Begins

Just about every baseball team has a full 40-man roster now, with the Astros the only team with an open spot at the moment. That means that just about every transaction, be it a free agent signing or a waiver claim, requires a corresponding move. However, that could soon change as the injured list is…
