  • Tommy Edman Still Not Cleared For Full Baseball Activities

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals infielder/outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) is continuing tee work with increased intensity. After being transferred to the 60-day injured list on Sunday, Edman has still yet to fully go through baseball activities after undergoing wrist surgery in October. Although the speedy 29-year-old switch-hitter still has a chance to return in late May when first eligible for reinstatement, he still needs to go through what will likely be a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment after missing all of spring training. In the interim, top prospect Masyn Winn is functioning as St. Louis' primary shortstop. Winn is slashing only .265/.333/.357 with seven extra-base hits, seven RBI, 10 runs scored, and five stolen bases through 98 at-bats (33 games) this season, however, and he isn't worth rostering in the majority of fantasy leagues at the moment.

  • Tommy Edman Moves To 60-Day Injured List

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

The St. Louis Cardinals moved outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) to the 60-day injured list on Monday, meaning he won't be eligible to return to the team until May 24 now. Edman had surgery on his right wrist last October and has yet to make his 2024 debut with the Cardinals. However, he has resumed taking swings from both sides of the plate and is making progress. The 28-year-old switch-hitter has yet to be cleared for full baseball activities yet, though, so he still has more boxes to check off before he's activated from the IL later this month. Until Edman is activated, Dylan Carlson figures to see most of the playing time in center field for the Cardinals. When Edman is back in St. Louis, he'll be an everyday starter for the team.

  • Tommy Edman Swinging From Both Sides Of A Tee

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder/infielder Tommy Edman (wrist) has progressed to taking swings from both sides of a tee and has reported no issues. Edman had been limited to swinging from the left side due to pain and swelling in his surgically-repaired right wrist, but he's still not ready to fully participate in baseball activities. While manager Oliver Marmol said on Monday that the switch-hitting 28-year-old speedster is "recovering really well", Edman probably won't be available to make his 2024 season debut until sometime in late May. With St. Louis getting very little offensive production from their outfield bats, fellow switch-hitter Dylan Carlson's (shoulder) return probably can't come soon enough. Last season, Edman slashed .248./307/.399 with 13 home runs, 47 RBI, 69 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases in 479 at-bats (137 games) for the Cards and is worth stashing for fantasy managers hunting for speed.

  • Tommy Edman, Dylan Carlson Starting To Swing The Bat

    Headshot for Dylan Carlson

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) will start taking dry swings on Monday and will hit off a tee on Tuesday. Meanwhile, outfielder Dylan Carlson (shoulder) will hit off a tee on Monday and will progress to soft toss this week. Edman is probably further from making his 2024 debut than Carlson after recovering from offseason surgery on his right wrist. When healthy, the 28-year-old will be St. Louis' starting center fielder after slashing .248/.307/.399 with a career-high-tying 13 home runs, 47 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 137 games played. Edman should be rostered in most fantasy baseball leagues despite his late start to the season. Carlson was shut down for two weeks after receiving a cortisone injection for an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder. The 25-year-old could have been playing every day if he was healthy, but when he returns, he might merely be the team's fourth outfielder.

  • Dylan Carlson, Tommy Edman To Begin Hitting Activities Monday

    Headshot for Dylan Carlson

St. Louis Cardinals center fielder Dylan Carlson (shoulder) and shortstop Tommy Edman (wrist) will begin hitting activities on Monday. Per Cardinals' manager Oli Marmol, the two will begin to ramp up their rehab process on Monday by hitting off a tee and taking soft toss. Edman had previously been cleared for baseball activities while Carlson had not, so this is a positive sign for Carlson's progress. No return timeline has been established for either player. In Carlson's absence, Victor Scott II's takeover in center field has not gone well with Scott hitting for just a .091 batting average. Masyn Winn has filled in for Edman at shortstop much more admirably, hitting .379 to start this season. Edman will hold more value to fantasy managers than Carlson upon their returns.

  • Tommy Edman Cleared For Baseball Activity

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) was cleared by a doctor on Monday to start baseball activities. Edman will now restart his buildup that will essentially be the start of spring training for him, so the 28-year-old isn't going to make his 2024 debut for the Cardinals anytime soon. Outfield prospect Victor Scott II has been filling in at center field for St. Louis with Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Dylan Carlson (shoulder) also hurt, but he's really struggling at the plate so far and could be sent back to the minors once Nootbaar is ready to return. Edman will be a lineup regular for the Cardinals when he's eventually fully healthy, making him a must-stash in all fantasy leagues.

  • Tommy Edman Still Shut Down From Most Baseball Activities

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) said he got "generally good news" from the MRI scans he got on his surgically repaired right wrist on Wednesday. However, he's still shut down from most baseball activities until another exam on his wrist takes place on Monday. Edman had surgery on his wrist last October and was unable to play at all in spring training. The 28-year-old could be cleared to ramp up his activity after his next exam on Monday, but there remains no clear timetable for when he might be able to make his 2024 debut. Edman should still be stashed in an injured list spot in all fantasy leagues. With Lars Nootbaar (ribs) and Dylan Carlson (shoulder) also on the IL, rookie Victor Scott II is in the big leagues for the first time in 2024 and has gone just 3-for-25 (.120) through his first seven games with a stolen base and nine strikeouts.

  • Tommy Edman Set For MRI

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) is set to have an MRI on Wednesday to verify that his wrist is healing and progressing positively. If the MRI yields positive results, Edman will begin a swinging program. The 28-year-old has been recovering from wrist surgery, which was performed in October. However, no date for his return has yet to be determined, as the Cardinals will have a better idea when he will return once the MRI results are in. The Cardinals and fantasy managers will benefit from his speed on the base paths once he returns to St. Louis' lineup. Victor Scott II should continue to handle centerfield duties while Edman is sidelined. After swiping 107 bags in over 163 minor-league games, Scott should be added to all leagues, especially for managers searching for speed.

  • Tommy Edman Will Begin Season On Injured List

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) will begin the season on the injured list, according to manager Oliver Marmol. Edman has been recovering from wrist surgery he had in October of last year, but with lingering pain in the wrist, he's yet to make a Grapefruit League appearance. This announcement seemed like it was coming, but with Edman now being shut down for at least a week, it is official. It's unclear when exactly he'll be ready, but for now it seems like Dylan Carlson or speedy prospect Victor Scott II would be the front-runners for replacing him. The 28-year-old now appears to be pricey at pick 171 overall, but he should be counted on for plenty of steals and runs whenever he does debut.

  • Tommy Edman Still Experiencing Wrist Pain

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oli Marmol said the club is evaluating the rehabilitation plan for outfielder/infielder Tommy Edman, who is still experiencing pain in his surgically-repaired right wrist. More clarity is coming later on Saturday, Marmol said. Edman spent nearly a month on the injured list in 2023 due to right wrist inflammation and underwent arthroscopic wrist surgery last October, having not yet appeared in any spring training games thus far. The 28-year-old switch hitter appears likely to open 2024 on the injured list at this point, so fantasy managers should start thinking about fading Edman until his 176.7 Yahoo ADP comes down a bit, despite the speedy Gold Glover tallying 60 combined homers and stolen bases in 2023. Until Brendan Donovan starts playing on defense, St. Louis' outfield should feature Alec Burleson, Dylan Carlson, and Jordan Walker from left to right to begin the campaign if Edman isn't ready to go.

  • Tommy Edman Doubtful For Opening Day

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals utility player Tommy Edman (wrist) is doubtful for Opening Day, according to president of baseball operations John Mozeliak. Mozeliak said Edman's recovery is not "tracking" on that timetable while it's unclear how much additional time he will need. The 28-year-old was shut down this spring due to pain in his surgically repaired right wrist but recently resumed baseball activities. Edman hit .248 with 13 home runs, 27 stolen bases, and a .706 OPS across 137 games last season, his fifth in the big leagues. He was expected to open the season as the Cardinals' primary center fielder but now it appears that job would likely belong to Dylan Carlson. Edman is eligible at second base, shortstop, and the outfield, giving his power/speed combination additional value, especially at the keystone.

  • Tommy Edman Resumes Baseball Activities

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

St. Louis Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said that center fielder Tommy Edman (wrist) resumed playing catch and hitting off a tee in camp on Tuesday. The next steps for Edman will be hitting with front toss and coach pitch, according to the skipper. Edman was recently shut down for a period after experiencing pain in his surgically repaired right wrist. "Days were (up and down) instead of (incremental progress). We could have continued on that path, but there's no reason to have two good days and one bad day. They studied it a little bit and felt it made more sense to have a pause and then go back at it," Marmol said. There's a chance Edman won't be ready by Opening Day on March 28. In that event, Dylan Carlson would open the year as St. Louis' center fielder. Edman provides a modest power/speed profile, but his stock is dropping due to his injury, and he's best viewed as a No. 4 fantasy outfielder.

  • Growing Concern About Tommy Edman

    Headshot for Tommy Edman

Internal concern is growing from the St. Louis Cardinals that outfielder Tommy Edman (wrist) won't be ready for Opening Day as he continues to progress from arthroscopic surgery he had in October to address an achy right wrist that plagued him for most of last year. He has yet to be cleared to face live pitching in camp, although he's been active in some infield drills on the back fields. The current priority is for the switch-hitting Edman to even out his swing, as his left side is ahead of his right side. The team has around three weeks left of spring games, and the Cardinals would prefer that Edman see game action before clearing him for the regular season. If he isn't ready for Opening Day on March 28, all signs point to Dylan Carlson taking over in center field, as the team prefers Lars Nootbaar in left. When healthy, Edman is expected to be the team's primary center fielder and will no longer be a backup in the infield.
