Leody Taveras Sits Amidst Slump

Texas Rangers outfielder Leody Taveras is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. In his absence, rookie Julio Pablo Martinez is starting in center field and is batting seventh against Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff. The Rangers are hoping a day off for Taveras will help him turn things around at the plate in the month of August. Since the calendar flipped to August, he's gone 9-for-53 (.170) with no home runs, four doubles, a triple, five RBI, 15 strikeouts and three runs scored in 14 starts. The 24-year-old Dominican has provided modest power/speed numbers for fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues in his fourth big-league season, though, hitting a career-high 11 home runs and stealing 11 bags while also driving in a career-high 54 runs in 105 games played.

Leody Taveras Sitting Out Against Angels

Texas Rangers outfielder Leody Taveras is taking a day off on Tuesday against the visiting Los Angeles Angels. Taveras will get a much-needed day of rest after starting each of the team's last 32 games. Julio Pablo Martinez is making the start in center field and will hit seventh in the batting order against Angels right-hander Lucas Giolito. The 24-year-old Taveras has struggled mightily since the All-Star break, hitting .191 (20-for-105) with a homer, seven doubles, a triple, 14 RBI, 30 strikeouts, two stolen bases and eight runs scored in 28 starts. In his fourth big-league season, Taveras has set career-highs across the board in home runs (11), RBI (54) and runs scored (51) in 104 games while tying his career-high in stolen bases with 11.

Rangers Call Up Julio Pablo Martinez

The Texas Rangers called up Cuban outfielder Julio Pablo Martinez from the minors on Wednesday, according to sources. Martinez will join the team in Oakland on Wednesday evening and will be activated on Friday in San Francisco. He spent five seasons in the minors after signing in 2018 for $2.8 million. The 27-year-old left-handed slugger gets his first call to the big leagues after impressing at Triple-A Round Rock to the tune of a .312/.427/.565 slash line with a .992 OPS, 12 home runs, 20 doubles, 55 RBI, 33 stolen bases and 49 runs scored in 67 games played. If you're searching for some power and/or speed, Martinez could be worth a look as a waiver-wire pickup in deep-mixed and AL-only leagues if he sees enough playing time in Texas.
