  • Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh Resting Saturday

    Headshot for Brandon Marsh

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Bryson Stott and outfielder Brandon Marsh are not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marsh and Stott will sit against Pirates left-hander Marco Gonzales. Stott and Marsh should be available off the bench to pinch-hit in Saturday's contest. Cristian Pache replaces Marsh in left field and is batting eighth, while Edmundo Sosa is batting sixth and handling the keystone. Pache has appeared in three games and has yet to collect a hit over four plate appearances. Sosa is hitting a robust .750 (3-for-4) with a homer over three games. Pache can be avoided in all fantasy leagues, while Sosa can be used as a streamer in a plus matchup versus Gonzales for Saturday's slate.

  • Brandon Marsh Continues Hot Start

    Headshot for Brandon Marsh

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh had another good day at the plate on Thursday in a 5-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Marsh went 1-for-3 with his fourth homer of the young season and added a run and two RBI to his line as well. The 26-year-old appears to be finding his groove fourth MLB season, as he is slashing a strong .333/.357/.641 with six runs, four homers, nine RBI, and a steal. He doesn't play every day, but if he continues to hit he might force the Phillies hand. Marsh has some upside and is a decent option in fantasy leagues, especially those with five outfielder spots to fill.

The Phillies reinforced their rotation with a major extension and a major re-signing, but it was otherwise a relatively quiet offseason in the City of Brotherly Love.  After making the NLCS last year, have the Phillies done enough to book a return to the World Series? • Brandon Marsh Progresses To Jogging

    Headshot for Brandon Marsh

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) has progressed to jogging at spring training. Marsh had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee in early February and was expected to need three to four weeks before making a full recovery. The 26-year-old left-handed hitter obviously won't be ready for the start of Grapefruit League games this weekend, but the Phillies are expecting him to be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback in his recovery from the minor surgery. When he's healthy, Marsh figures to be the team's starting left fielder against right-handed pitching, but he'll lose at-bats to Whit Merrifield against left-handers. Even though Marsh lowered his strikeout rate in 2023, he still struck out a third of the time. He's still an asset in mixed fantasy leagues because of his above-average power and his speed, and he's great defensively for the Phils as well.

  • Phillies Not Pursuing Significant Outfield Addition?

    Headshot for Nick Castellanos

Philadelphia Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski downplayed the team's speculative interest in acquiring an outfielder ahead of spring training. Even with Brandon Marsh (knee) expected to miss roughly one month, the Phillies don't feel as though his injury opens up enough playing time to warrant an external addition. "The reality is that we don't have guaranteed playing time that some people want," Dombrowski said. "We just don't have that. It's not really even a dollar issue as it is playing time." At this time, it appears the Phillies plan to open the 2024 season with an outfield of Jake Cave, Cristian Pache, and Nick Castellanos.

  • Brandon Marsh Undergoes Knee Surgery

    Headshot for Brandon Marsh

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (knee) underwent successful left-knee arthroscopic debridement surgery with Dr. Steven Cohen in Philadelphia on Friday morning. It's expected that Marsh will return to playing at three to four weeks and be ready for Opening Day. The surgery wasn't all that invasive, but if the 26-year-old has any setbacks at all during spring training, he'll most likely have the start of his 2024 campaign delayed slightly in the season's first month. When healthy, Marsh should see most of the playing time for the Phils in left field, and he's also an option to play in center field if Johan Rojas isn't ready for an everyday role. Marsh played well in 2023 in his first full season in Philly but struck out a third of the time and is still slightly more valuable for his glove than his bat. He'll give fantasy managers modest totals in homers and speed.
