  • Nico Hoerner Starting On The Bench Against Marlins

Chicago Cubs middle infielder Nico Hoerner is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Miami Marlins. It will be Hoerner's first game off in the last 27 games, so he'll get a much-needed breather. The 25-year-old has been a solid contributor at the plate for the struggling Cubs, hitting .292/.335/.412 with six home runs, 33 RBI, 33 runs scored and 11 stolen bases in 340 plate appearances and 89 games. With Hoerner starting on the bench, rookie Christopher Morel will get the nod at the 6 and hit eighth in the batting order on Friday against Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera. Morel is hitting .260/.333/.455 on the season with nine homers, 29 RBI and nine stolen bases in his first 65 big-league games, but he's gone just 13-for-59 (.220) with no homers and four RBI in 18 games over the last 28 days.

  • Nico Hoerner Activated From Injured List Wednesday

The Chicago Cubs activated infielder Nico Hoerner (ankle) from the 10-day injured list ahead of Wednesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The team placed catcher Yan Gomes (oblique) on the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Hoerner had been sidelined for about two weeks due to a right ankle sprain. He is not in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game, but he is presumably available off the bench. Over 29 games this year, the 25-year-old is slashing .271/.293/.396 with two home runs, two stolen bases, 11 RBI and six runs.

  • Nico Hoerner To Run The Bases On Saturday

Chicago Cubs shortstop Nico Hoerner (ankle) is set to run the bases on Saturday. This will be his first base-running workout since landing on the 10-day injured list about a week ago. The 25-year-old is dealing with a right ankle sprain. His move to the injured list was retroactive to Thursday, May 12, so he's eligible to return in just a few days, but it seems unlikely he'll be able to do so. Over 29 games this year, Hoerner is slashing .271/.293/.396 with two home runs, two stolen bases, 11 RBI and six runs.
