Francisco Alvarez, Mark Vientos Resting Thursday

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and rookie third baseman Mark Vientos are both out of the starting lineup on Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Alvarez is a bit dinged up and will receive a day off behind the plate after he hit a big three-run home run in Wednesday's 10-inning victory. The 21-year-old backstop has now played in 26 games in 2023 and is hitting .218 (17-for-78) with four doubles, four home runs and nine RBI. The 23-year-old Vientos went 1-for-4 with his first big-league home run in his MLB debut on Wednesday. Michael Perez is doing the catching for New York on Thursday and is in the nine-hole, while Brett Baty is at third base and is batting fifth against Rays right-handed rookie Taj Bradley.

Mets Promote Mark Vientos

New York Mets corner infield prospect Mark Vientos has been recalled by team on Wednesday. Vientos, 23, has torn the cover off the ball for Triple-A Syracuse with a .333 batting average to go along with 13 homers and 37 RBI. It was only a matter of time before forcing his way onto the roster, but the struggling Mets have finally gave in. Vientos historically has struggled with swing and misses in his career, but has made a drastic improvement this season and improved his overall strikeout rate significantly. The right-handed power hitter got a cup of coffee with the Mets last season and hit .167 with one home run and three RBI over 36 at-bats. Pete Alonso has first base covered, but Vientos is a natural third baseman and could platoon with fellow rookie Brett Baty and also see time as a designated hitter or even in the outfield. The Mets didn't bring him up to ride the bench and he should see plenty of at-bats in his future. Due to his immense power, he is worthy of a speculative add in all formats.

Mark Vientos Hits Home Run No. 12

New York Mets third base prospect Mark Vientos hit his 12th home run of the 2023 Triple-A season in a game for Triple-A Syracuse. The 23-year-old is having a fantastic season, slashing .333/.420/.667 with 24 runs, 33 RBI, and a 12.1% walk rate in 36 games. The Florida native debuted at the major-league level last season, slashing .167/.268/.278 with a home run, three RBI, and three runs. Vientos should get the call-up soon to add some offensive firepower to a struggling Mets lineup that is 18th in OPS and 23rd in SLG. His poor defense limits the right-handed hitter to a platoon role with leftie DH Daniel Vogelbach, but he's still worth stashing in deeper leagues for his elite power.
