  • Royce Lewis Receives PRP Injection

    Headshot for Royce Lewis

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis (quadriceps) said he received a platelet-rich plasma injection to help his right quadriceps muscle heal. Lewis suffered a serious quad strain on Opening Day last Thursday and will be shut down from baseball activities for at least a month. Hopefully, his PRP injection will speed up the healing process in his leg, but the 24-year-old is still going to be out for a while and needs to be stashed in an injured list spot in all fantasy leagues. Since Lewis was injured, Willi Castro has been serving as the team's regular third baseman and has gone just 2-for-16 (.125) with two runs scored, three walks and seven strikeouts in his first 20 plate appearances of the year in five contests.

  • Twins Place Royce Lewis On 10-Day IL, Promote Austin Martin

    Headshot for Royce Lewis

11:58PM: Lewis' quad strain is "severe," as Twins chief baseball officer Derek Falvey told reporters (including Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press).  The infielder will be shut down for a month and then re-evaluated, so it doesn't look like Lewis will be back in the majors until mid-May at the absolute earliest. 10:27AM:...

  • Royce Lewis Has 'Severe' Quad Strain

    Headshot for Royce Lewis

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis has a "severe" quad strain that is going to keep him out long-term. Twins president of baseball operations David Falvey told the media Lewis will require one month of pure recovery before the club will even have an idea of how much additional time he will need before building back up to playing. This was always the risk for fantasy managers this spring as the oft-injured Lewis has appeared in just 71 MLB games since being drafted first overall back in 2017. He tantalized with 15 home runs and a .920 OPS in just 58 games in 2023, leaving managers with a serious risk/reward scenario in drafts this spring. Those who drafted Lewis at his 48.83 ADP are losing that bet just one game into the season.

  • Royce Lewis Going On Injured List

    Headshot for Royce Lewis

The Minnesota Twins are placing third baseman Royce Lewis (quadriceps) on the injured list on Saturday after injuring his quadriceps on Opening Day on Thursday against the Kansas City Royals. We don't quite know the exact severity of Lewis' injury after he was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam, but it's obviously serious enough to keep him on the shelf for at least the next 10 days. The oft-injured 24-year-old slugger is one of the team's best hitters, but he's had trouble staying healthy in his career so far. The former first overall pick in 2017 had two hits in his only two at-bats on Thursday, including a home run, before being pulled from the game. He should be stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues, but hopefully he'll be ready to return from his IL stint when he's eligible.

  • Extension Unlikely For Royce Lewis Right Now

    Headshot for Royce Lewis

Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis is open to a contract extension with the team, but as of right now, that is looking unlikely to happen. The first overall pick in 2017 is a client of agent Scott Boras, but Lewis said he'd be "an idiot" to not listen if the Twins wanted to discuss a long-term deal. Lewis had a breakout 2023 after missing two years with a torn ACL in his right knee. The Twins are in the midst of trimming payroll, potentially up to a $30 million reduction from last year. The 24-year-old is under team control through 2028, too, so the Twins are in no rush. He hit .309/.372/.548 with a .921 OPS, 15 home runs, 52 RBI and six stolen bases in just 58 games for Minnesota in 2023 and is now firmly a top-10 fantasy third baseman heading into the 2024 campaign, although he does come with considerable injury risk.
