Offseason Outlook: Washington Nationals

In conjunction with this post, Anthony Franco will hold a Nationals-centric chat on 9-26-23 at 3:30 pm CDT. Click here to leave a question in advance. The Nationals were a little more competitive than expected into late summer. They’ve improved on last year’s 107-loss showing but are likely headed for a fourth straight last-place finish…

Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez confirmed that left-hander MacKenzie Gore's (finger) season is over. The team was close to shutting him down innings-wise anyway, but his blister was the deciding factor. The Nationals put Gore on the 15-day injured list last Saturday due to the blister on one of his left fingers, and now he's officially done for the rest of the year. The 24-year-old southpaw had a decent first full season in the big leagues in 2023 in his first year in D.C., going 7-10 with a 4.42 ERA (4.89 FIP), 1.40 WHIP, 57 walks and 151 strikeouts in 136 1/3 innings over 27 starts for the Nats. Gore will look to build on that in his third major-league season in 2024.

Nationals Place MacKenzie Gore On Injured List Saturday

The Washington Nationals put starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore (finger) on the 15-day injured list as a result of left finger blisters. The 24-year-old coughed up four runs (three homers) with two walks across four innings despite nine days of rest in his time out. Gore will now be out for at least two weeks, putting the remainder of his 2023 season in limbo. The former No. 3 overall pick presented promising results in the first half of the last two campaigns, but faltered in the second part once again. Gore's erratic ways saw him log a 5.10 ERA in his latest 15 starts (72.1 innings) since June 10. Redraft fantasy managers can likely pull the plug in favor of a better stash at this stage.

Nationals Place MacKenzie Gore On 15-Day IL

The Nationals placed left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the 15-day injured list earlier today with finger blisters. Fellow lefty Joe La Sorsa was recalled in the corresponding move. As relayed by MLB.com, manager Dave Martinez told reporters this afternoon that Gore is likely done for the season as a result of the injury, though he added…

The Washington Nationals placed left-hander MacKenzie Gore on the bereavement list on Thursday and recalled pitcher Joe La Sorsa from Triple-A Rochester in a corresponding move. Gore will be away from the Nationals for at least their next three games heading into the weekend. In his first year in D.C. and just his second in the big leagues, the 24-year-old southpaw has gone 7-10 with a 4.28 ERA (4.67 FIP), 1.38 WHIP, 55 walks and 147 strikeouts in 132 1/3 innings over 26 starts. Although he's been a bit fortunate in eight starts since the All-Star break, Gore has posted a 4.01 ERA (5.61 FIP), 16 walks and 39 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings since July 17.

MacKenzie Gore To Start Wednesday Against Yankees

Washington Nationals left-hander MacKenzie Gore (finger) is scheduled to start on Wednesday against the New York Yankees in the Bronx. Gore has been dealing with a nail issue and a blister on his left index finger, but apparently it won't be enough to keep him out this week. The 24-year-old's finger issue was a problem for him in his last outing on Aug. 16 against the Boston Red Sox, although he still tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. He's gone 6-9 in his first year with the Nats with a 4.38 ERA (4.48 FIP), 1.38 WHIP, 52 walks and 141 strikeouts in 123 1/3 innings over his 24 starts. In six starts since the All-Star break, Gore has allowed 16 earned runs on 26 hits (seven homers) while walking 13 and fanning 33 in 33 2/3 innings. He'll get a Yankees team on the ropes this week.

MacKenzie Gore Leaves Early On Wednesday

Washington Nationals starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore (undisclosed) was forced to exit early during Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox. This is a shame considering the southpaw was pitching extremely well before he exited the game. Gore only allowed three baserunners over 6 1/3 shutout innings with seven strikeouts. It's uncertain what is wrong with Gore as he looked to be in obvious pain after throwing a pitch. There should be an update on his status shortly.

Nationals Moving To Six-Man Rotation

The Washington Nationals are going to experiment with a six-man starting rotation moving forward, which will help them manage the workloads of pitchers like left-hander MacKenzie Gore and right-hander Jake Irvin down the stretch. Gore was injured last year and has already tossed a career-high 117 innings this year. Irvin has also thrown a career-high 106 1/3 innings already in 2023 between the Nats and his time at Triple-A Rochester. In just his second big-league season, and first in Washington, Gore is 6-9 with a 4.62 ERA (4.61 FIP), 1.43 WHIP, 50 walks and 134 K's in his 117 innings. Irvin has posted a 4.93 ERA (5.46 FIP), 1.44 WHIP, 36 walks and 68 punchouts in 84 innings in his first 17 big-league starts.

MacKenzie Gore Dealing With A Blister

Washington Nationals right-hander MacKenzie Gore (finger) exited Saturday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies with a blister on his left middle finger. He allowed seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three across 2 2/3 innings before exiting. The 24-year-old is considered day-to-day and is questionable for his next scheduled start on Thursday against the Reds. He owns a 4.48 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, and a 107: 39 K: BB across 88 1/3 innings in 2023. Gore will undergo further evaluation, and it's unclear if he will make his next start before the All-Star Break.
