  • Hunter Greene Aiming To Put Rough Spring Behind Him Saturday

    Headshot for Hunter Greene

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene will be looking to put a rough spring behind him on Saturday afternoon when he takes on the visiting Washington Nationals. Greene was touched up for a 7.20 ERA with 10 walks allowed in five starts and 15 innings pitched in Cactus League action. He still punched out 19 hitters in that time and his spring ERA is somewhat skewed by one outing in which he allowed seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings while his final spring tune-up consisted of one earned run surrendered in three innings of work. The hard-throwing righty posted a 4.82 ERA in 22 starts last season, although his 3.74 SIERA suggests he was far better than that while he punched out a hefty 30.5% of the hitters he faced. He is a strong bounce-back candidate for fantasy managers this season given his underlying data.

  • Hunter Greene Gets Annihilated On Tuesday

    Headshot for Hunter Greene

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Hunter Greene got rocked against the Los Angeles Angels in Tuesday's Spring Training contest. Greene went 4 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, seven runs, two walks and K'd six on the day. The 24-year-old has looked good otherwise this spring with six runs allowed in three starts prior, so managers should not be that worried with his weak performance. The fireballer has shown throughout his career that he can be dominant and rack up K's, but also will having outings like yesterday where he gets lit up. As with many of his teammates, the Reds are expected to take a big step forward and Greene will be a big part of making that a reality in 2024. Greene has an ADP of 122 and he makes for a solid SP3 with very large potential. Even when he gets blown up, he still is a strong source of strikeouts and that should ease the pain of managers looking to capitalize on the good of the flamethrower in 2024.

  • Offseason In Review: Cincinnati Reds

    Headshot for Andrew Abbott

The Reds almost made the playoffs last year as they promoted several exciting prospects and seemed to firmly end their rebuilding period. They added to that foundation this offseason by spreading money around to several free agents. • Hunter Greene Working On A Curveball

    Headshot for Hunter Greene

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene is working on a new curveball in camp this year. Last year, Greene used his fastball 54.4% of the time, his slider 40.3% and his changeup only 5.3%. His fastball averaged 98.3 mph in 2023, the slider was 87.3 mph, and the changeup was 91.1 mph. The new curve is in the low-80s. "It's exciting," Greene said. "(I'll) continue to refine it and work on it, but looking forward to being able to have a good offering this season." The 24-year-old has also thrown a split-fingered fastball, but it's unclear how much he'll use those pitches in 2024. The hard-throwing Greene's fastball could be even more devastating with a slow curve to keep hitters honest. He has plenty of fantasy upside, but he hasn't thrown more than 125 2/3 innings in his first two years in the big leagues.
