  • Nestor Cortes Roughed Up In Spring Debut Saturday

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) made his Grapefruit League debut on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays and didn't have a great time on the mound. Cortes allowed three hits (two home runs) and five earned runs while walking three and striking out four in 3 1/3 innings of work. Although it wasn't the outing he'd like to have had, the most important thing is that Cortes is healthy and on track to be ready for Opening Day, which is important for the Yankees' starting rotation with both Carlos Rodon and Frankie Montas already hurt. The 28-year-old southpaw's spring debut was delayed due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain that he suffered early in camp. Cortes isn't dominant in the strikeout department, but he remains a key piece of New York's 2023 rotation.

  • Nestor Cortes Hopeful To Make Spring Debut Soon

New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (hamstring) is scheduled to make his Spring Training debut on March 18 against the Baltimore Orioles. It's worth noting this is a tentative date, so it could change. The left-hander is scheduled to throw a live bullpen session on Monday. He was diagnosed with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain in mid-February. This caused him to miss the World Baseball Classic, but the hope is that Cortes will be ready in time for Opening Day. Fantasy managers will have to check back after his bullpen session on Monday.

  • Nestor Cortes To Throw One More BP Session

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) will throw one more live batting practice session before making his Grapefruit League debut, and manager Aaron Boone said Cortes has been throwing the ball well. Cortes got through a three-inning simulated game on Wednesday and looked good. The 28-year-old southpaw is getting close to game action, and barring a setback late in camp, he should be ready for Opening Day at the end of this month. Cortes doesn't overpower hitters and doesn't have a terribly high ceiling, but he kept hitters off balance nicely in 2022 and will be a solid No. 3 fantasy starter. The biggest question will be whether he can hold up with another big workload in New York's rotation all year.

  • Nestor Cortes Throws Three-Inning Simulated Game

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) threw a three-inning simulated game at spring training on Wednesday. Cortes has been behind the other pitchers in camp due to a mild right hamstring strain, but he's getting closer to making his Grapefruit League debut, which could come early next week. The 28-year-old southpaw could be ready to take his first turn in the starting rotation in the regular season if he can avoid any setbacks from here on out in camp. He was an excellent value pick in fantasy last year and could once again be a solid contributor in 2023 after he made the All-Star team for the first time in 2022. Cortes uses deception instead of velocity to induce weak contact.

  • Nestor Cortes Expected To Begin Season As Fifth Starter

New York Yankees southpawNestor Cortes(hamstring) is expected to start off the season as the fifth man of the Yankees rotation. According to manager Aaron Boone, the Yankees will ramp up Cortes to begin the season as a precaution to heal his hamstring completely. Cortes withdrew from the WBC after an apparent hamstring injury forced him to back out. The Yankees will start the season with a rotation consisting ofGerrit Cole,Carlos Rodon,Luis Severino,Clarke Schmidt/Domingo German, and Cortes. The 28-year-old will be bumped up to the fourth spot once Boone is comfortable employing him with no setbacks. Cortes is poised for another promising performance in 2023 and hopes to make his second All-Star appearance.

  • Nestor Cortes To Throw Live BP Friday

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) said that he did pitcher's fielding practice on Wednesday for the first time since suffering a hamstring strain and felt good. He will throw live batting practice on Friday and might get into a Grapefruit League game for the first time next week, likely on Wednesday. The 28-year-old southpaw starter strained his right hamstring early in camp and has been working his way back since, but he still has plenty of time to get ready for Opening Day, as long as he doesn't have any setbacks. Cortes made his first All-Star team in 2021 and figures to be a key piece in the Yankees' starting rotation yet again behind aces Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon in 2023.

  • Nestor Cortes Nearing Spring Debut

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) has resumed throwing from a mound, including against live competition on Feb. 23, and he has been running at around 90 percent intensity. Manager Aaron Boone said that Cortes will likely throw one more live batting practice session before making his Grapefruit League debut in camp. A Grade 2 right hamstring strain forced Cortes to drop out of this year's World Baseball Classic, but he still has a chance to be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback. The 28-year-old was a first-time All-Star for the Yankees in 2022. He doesn't blow hitters away with velocity, but he keeps hitters off balance with different arm angles from the left side and should be a key contributor in New York's rotation again this year behind aces Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon.

  • Nestor Cortes Feels Good After Bullpen

New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes (hamstring) said he made "good strides and felt better" after throwing his first bullpen session on Friday since being diagnosed with a low-grade 2 hamstring strain that forced him to pull out of this year's World Baseball Classic. Cortes also said he was progressing faster than he initially thought and reported no issues throwing or landing. It's good news for the 28-year-old southpaw, and he should be ready for Opening Day if he can avoid setbacks. Cortes isn't a hard thrower, but he's a crafty left that keeps hitters off balance with different arm angles. He was a late-round steal in 2022, but fantasy managers are probably going to be a bit more cautious with him this year, especially with his injury in spring training.

  • Nestor Cortes Throws Bullpen Session Friday

New York Yankees starting pitcher Nestor Cortes (hamstring), who had to pull out of this year's World Baseball Classic due to a right hamstring injury, threw a bullpen session on Friday. Cortes' injury appears to be very minor, but the Yankees aren't taking any chances this early in spring training, and it was a no-brainer for him to skip the WBC. Barring any further setbacks, the 28-year-old left-hander should be good to go for Opening Day in the Yankees' starting rotation. He made his first All-Star team in 2022 with a 12-4 record, career-best 2.44 ERA (3.12 FIP), 0.92 WHIP and 26.5 percent strikeout rate in 28 starts and 158 1/3 innings pitched. The crafty southpaw doesn't throw hard and won't blow hitters away, but he could have another very nice season in 2023 if he can stay healthy.

  • Nestor Cortes Jr. Out Of WBC With Tweaked Hamstring

New York Yankees starter Nestor Cortes (hamstring) is reportedly out of the World Baseball Classic with a tweaked hamstring, per a tweet from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal on Monday morning. Cortes had a breakout season for the American League East club in 2022, logging a 2.44 ERA, 3.13 FIP, 163 strikeouts and 38 walks in 28 starts spanning 158 1/3 innings of work. The left-handed starter also registered 12 wins on the season.

  • Nestor Cortes To Make $3.2 Million In 2023

The New York Yankees and left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes agreed to a one-year, $3.2 million deal to avoid salary arbitration on Friday. The 28-year-old Cuban southpaw made the All-Star team for the first time in 2022 in his fifth major-league season and second with the Yanks. He went 12-4 with a career-best 2.44 ERA (3.12 FIP), 0.92 WHIP, career-high 163 strikeouts and 38 walks in 158 1/3 frames over his 28 starts. Cortes suffered a left groin injury while pitching in the American League Championship Series, but he should be fine for the start of 2023. Fantasy managers should consider him a fringe top-30 fantasy starter.
