  • Shohei Ohtani Has Successful Surgery

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) underwent successful elbow surgery on Tuesday. This was not Tommy John surgery, but it will still limit the two-way superstar to designated hitter duties in 2024. Ohtani won't pitch at all next season, but is expected to be able to hit at the beginning of the 2024 season. At least Ohtani will be able to contribute in some way next season. The expectation is that Ohtani will be able to resume his two-way hitting and pitching during the 2025 season.

  • Shohei Ohtani Out For The Season With Oblique Strain

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter/starting pitcher Shohei Ohtani (oblique) has been placed on the 10-day injured list and will be out for the remainder of the regular season. The 29-year-old superstar was also diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow last month but was still serving as the Angels' DH up until September 4, when he strained his oblique. He's now done for the regular season, and most likely, has played his last game as a member of the Los Angeles Angels. Ohtani will hit free agency for the first time this offseason and will have no shortage of bidders, despite the fact his elbow will require surgery at some point. Despite missing the final month of the regular season, he's still the odds-on favorite to take home his second AL MVP. He'll end the year with a .304/.412/.654 batting line to go along with 44 homers, 95 RBI, and 20 stolen bases over 599 plate appearances. As a pitcher, he put up a 10-5 record, 3.14 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 167:55 K/BB ratio over 132 innings (23 starts). Just ridiculous.

  • Shohei Ohtani Empties Locker In Clubhouse On Friday

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels outfielder/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (oblique) cleared out his locker at Angel Stadium on Friday. The Angels will offer a statement on the 29-year-old's situation on Saturday, as Jeff Fletcher notes that they are aware of this development. Ohtani was last seen in Anaheim's lineup on Sep. 3 before straining his oblique during batting practice on Sep. 4. The Angels could be preparing to turn their attention toward Ohtani's likely surgery to repair his torn UCL, as well as his impending free agency this winter. If this indeed signals a wrap for Ohtani in 2023, then what a show the two-way superstar put on. The AL MVP front runner hit .304 (151-for-497) with an AL-best .412 OBP, 44 home runs and eight triples to go with 95 RBI, 102 runs scored, and 20 stolen bases. As a pitcher, he garnered a 3.14 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, and 167:55 K:BB over 132 innings. The Halos will clear things up later on Saturday.

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (oblique, elbow) is still out of the lineup Friday night against the Detroit Tigers. Ohtani last played on Sept. 3 in Oakland and it's looking increasingly likely that he may not make it back this season. There has been no word that the Angels plan to shut him down, but time is quickly running out for him to make a return. It's been a rough end to the season for Ohtani, who has been relegated to just hitting duties due to him tearing his UCL.

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) remains out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Ohtani was slated to return on Monday, but was scratched ahead of the contest. The 29-year-old will miss Tuesday's game as well, which makes nine straight games that Ohtani has sat out. The team continues to list Ohtani as day-to-day, but it seems increasingly likely that he'll head to the injured list. Matt Thaiss will bat sixth and serve as the designated hitter versus right-hander Bryan Woo on Tuesday.

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (oblique, elbow) was scratched from Monday's starting lineup against the Seattle Mariners. Mike Moustakas is now serving as the designated hitter and is batting cleanup against Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert. It looked like the 29-year-old two-way superstar was going to return to action for the first time in a week due to a tight right oblique, but instead he'll miss yet another game to begin the week. The Japanese All-Star should be returned to all starting fantasy lineups whenever he does return, as he's still leading the league in home runs (44), triples (eight), on-base percentage (.412), slugging percentage (.654), OPS (1.066) and total bases (325) in 599 plate appearances as a hitter in 2023.

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (oblique) is back in the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the Mariners and right-hander Logan Gilbert. Oblique inflammation has sidelined the two-way star for the last week but he will return and hit second Monday night in Seattle. Of course, it's been a massive season for Ohtani who has hit .304 with 44 home runs and 20 stolen bases across 599 plate appearances while tossing a 3.14 ERA along with a 31.5% K% across 132 innings on the mound. While he won't pitch for the remainder of the 2023 season due to an elbow issue, Ohtani appears set to reclaim everyday DH duties when healthy down the stretch.

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (oblique) may start in Seattle on Monday, according to manager Phil Nevin. Nevin also said Ohtani could be available off the bench Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians. The all-world player last played Sep 3 and has been out with oblique inflammation. The Angels have been cautious with Ohtani this week, considering him day-to-day each game but electing not to play him. Fantasy managers are surely hoping to have Ohtani back in the playoffs as he could carry a lineup to victory if he were to get hot.

  • Angels Could Be Open To Trading Mike Trout

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

USA Today's Bob Nightengale hears that "the Los Angeles Angels, perhaps for the first time, are open to trading All-Star outfielder Mike Trout (wrist) if he indicates to them that he wants out". Nightengale also reports that "Trout wants to have a private conversation with the front office and ownership about their direction". While it remains to be see if the Angels can retain impending free agent Shohei Ohtani this winter, they may be willing to explore what the trade market has to offer for their oft-injured 32-year-old superstar. But as Nightengale also notes, Trout owns a full no-trade clause and wouldn't land the Angels the same compensation he may have once demanded since he will have missed 249 games in the last three years if he remains out for 2023.The three-time MVP still holds seven years left on his deal, so he may turn out to be a tough sell despite slashing .283/.382/.579 with 66 home runs, 59 doubles, 142 RBI, and 162 runs scored in 237 games since 2021.

  • Shohei Ohtani Continues To Sit Out

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) remains out of the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. This marks the sixth game in a row that Ohtani has missed due to inflammation in his right oblique. The right-hander is also dealing with a UCL tear in his elbow that will require surgery. The Angels were hopeful that Ohtani could keep hitting even with the elbow issue. At this point, the team should probably shut down Ohtani for the season. The Halos aren't in the playoff picture, so there's no reason to risk Ohtani getting even more injured. For now, Ohtani is considered as day-to-day, but we'll see how long that lasts. Matt Thaiss will serve as the designated hitter and bat fifth versus right-hander Lucas Giolito on Saturday.

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) remains out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Cleveland Guardians. The 29-year-old will miss his fifth game in a row as he continues to nurse an oblique issue. Ohtani is expected to undergo elbow surgery at the end of the season, so he already wasn't pitching. At this point, the Angels might as well just shut him down for the season and allow Ohtani to get healthy. It remains to be seen if the Angels plan to do that. In the meantime, Chad Wallach will serve as the designated hitter and bat sixth versus left-hander Logan Allen on Friday.

  • Shohei Ohtani Hasn't Taken Swings

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin said that two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (oblique, elbow) didn't end up taking any swings like he had planned on Wednesday. Ohtani went to the batting cages to loosen up, but felt that he needed to take the night off. However, Nevin said the team still isn't considering putting Ohtani on the injured list at the moment while he deals with a minor right-oblique injury. The 29-year-old Japanese All-Star is also dealing with a right-elbow injury that will require an offseason procedure, but the Angels think Ohtani can finish out the year as their primary designated hitter. Fantasy managers should continue to consider Ohtani day-to-day and check to see if he's in Thursday's starting lineup against the Cleveland Guardians.

  • Shohei Ohtani Remains Out Wednesday

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (oblique, elbow) remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles. Ohtani felt something in his right oblique while taking batting practice and has been held out since, but he's managed to avoid going on the injured list for now and is considered day-to-day after tests showed just some minor inflammation. Of course, the 29-year-old Japanese All-Star is also dealing with a right-elbow injury that is going to eventually require an offseason procedure that could keep him from pitching all of the 2024 season. Plenty of teams will still be interested in the free-agent to be, but it will surely affect his value on the open market. Ohtani currently leads the league in homers (44), runs (102), triples (eight), walks (91), on-base percentage (.412), OPS (1.066) and total bases (325), so hopefully he can return as the Angels DH on Thursday against the Guardians.

  • Shohei Ohtani Avoids The Injured List

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) has been out of the lineup for the past two contests. But according to Jeff Fletcher of the SoCal News Group, an injured list stint won't be necessary for the two-way star. Fantasy managers can still consider him day-to-day, though, as test results revealed some inflammation in his right oblique. Ohtani's had a rough few weeks, as the club shut him down from pitching for the rest of the 2023 campaign after he suffered a partial tear in his UCL in late August and will eventually need surgery to repair it. Still, fantasy owners can take advantage of his bat when he returns to action, as he's slashed .304/.412/.654 with 44 bombs, 102 runs, 95 RBI, and 20 steals across 135 games.

  • Shohei Ohtani To Miss Tuesday's Game

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) is out of Tuesday's starting lineup against the Baltimore Orioles. This doesn't come as much of a surprise considering Ohtani is battling two injuries right now. The good news is that Angels' manager Phil Nevin said Ohtani is feeling improved. Fantasy managers can consider Ohtani as day-to-day right now, but there remains the chance of him being placed on the injured list. The Angels aren't really in the playoff hunt, so resting Ohtani for the remainder of the season is a possibility. The team has not released their lineup for Tuesday's contest, so it's uncertain who is going to be the designated hitter on Tuesday.

Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin said Monday that starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) is pretty sore and that the team will know more about his oblique on Tuesday after further testing, per MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. The two-way star was scratched from the lineup ahead of Monday's game against the Orioles with right-oblique tightness. Fantasy managers have already lost Ohtani as a pitcher due to a partial tear in his ulnar collateral ligament, and it would be an even bigger blow if they lose his stellar bat as well. They should keep an eye out for further news on Tuesday.

  • Procedure "Inevitable" For Shohei Ohtani's Elbow

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Nez Balelo, the agent of Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (elbow, oblique) said Monday that it is "inevitable" that he will have "some kind of procedure" to repair the partial tear in his right ulnar collateral ligament. However, he also said that "Shohei is going to be in somebody's lineup next year, DH-ing when the bell rings." Ohtani was shut down from pitching at the end of August but has still been hitting and owns a .304/.412/.654 slash line with 44 home runs, 95 RBI, and 20 stolen bases. Ohtani, who is poised to be one of the most intriguing free agents this winter, now has a good deal of uncertainty around him. While he has proven to be a top fantasy asset with his hitting skills alone, how he treats his elbow, and when, will determine his potential fantasy value in 2024.

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) is serving as the designated hitter and batting in the two-hole on Friday against the New York Mets and right-hander Kodai Senga. Ohtani received bad news on Wednesday night when he was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow, and he won't pitch again the rest of the season. The 29-year-old Japanese All-Star could need to have the second Tommy John procedure of his career, but until that is decided, he's expected to continue serving as the Angels' everyday DH. Ohtani has been better as a hitter in 2023, and he currently leads the league in runs scored (97), triples (seven), home runs (44), walks (78), on-base percentage (.405), slugging percentage (.664), OPS (1.069) and total bases (310) in 126 games.

  • Shohei Ohtani To Continue To Hit For Angels

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) will travel with the Angels to New York this weekend, and it looks like he'll continue to play as the designated hitter while he decides the next course of action with the UCL tear in his right elbow. Late last night, the Angels announced that Ohtani will not pitch again in 2023 due to his UCL tear, but it remains to be seen if he'll undergo Tommy John surgery for the second time on his right elbow. Fantasy managers that have Ohtani the pitcher rostered can drop him in single-year leagues, but he should still be useful as a hitter as long he continues to DH. The 29-year-old Japanese All-Star currently leads the league with 44 home runs, 97 runs scored, seven triples, 78 walks, a .664 slugging percentage, a 1.069 OPS, 310 total bases and 16 intentional walks in 126 games.

  • Shohei Ohtani Has Torn UCL, Won't Pitch Again This Year

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (elbow) has been diagnosed with a torn UCL in his right elbow and won't pitch again this season. Ohtani was removed from his start early in Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday due to arm fatigue, but this is much worse news. The 29-year-old right-handed hurler could eventually need the second Tommy John surgery of his career, which would keep him out of action for around a full year as a pitcher. The good news is that Ohtani will continue to serve as the Angels' designated hitter the rest of the way. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues that have Ohtani rostered as a pitcher can go ahead and drop him now. He'll finish 2023 season with a strong 3.17 ERA and 1.06 WHIP over 22 starts.

  • Shohei Ohtani Leaves With Arm Fatigue Wednesday

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (arm) left his start on the mound early in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds due to arm fatigue. Ohtani left with trainers after throwing just 26 pitches. In his 1 1/3 innings scoreless innings of work, he walked one, struck out two and didn't allow a hit. The Japanese All-Star also hit his 44th home run of the season as the designated hitter early in this contest. Ohtani took a break from starting for two weeks due to arm fatigue, and it apparently hasn't gone away, so fantasy managers should prepare for more time off as a pitcher in the coming weeks. For now, consider him day-to-day as a hurler. Despite the arm issues, Ohtani hasn't allowed a run in his last four outings.

Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin said that it will be a normal start for right-hander Shohei Ohtani on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds in the first game of a doubleheader. Nevin doesn't want to push Ohtani, but he felt great in his last bullpen session and flat-ground session over the last few days. The 29-year-old two-way superstar took a break from pitching because of fatigue, so he'll be on plenty of rest in the matchup with Cincy on Wednesday. The three-time All-Star should be returned to starting fantasy lineups. In his last three outings, he hasn't given up an earned run while walking seven and striking out 17 in 19 innings pitched.

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani is still scheduled to make his next start on Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds. Ohtani, who has had some issues with cramping recently, skipped his last start on the mound due to fatigue. After getting some much-needed rest, the 29-year-old right-hander will rejoin the starting rotation to take on Cincinnati. The Japanese All-Star had a rough patch on the mound in early July due to blister issues on his pitching hand, but he hasn't allowed an earned run while walking seven and striking out 17 in 19 innings over his last three starts against the Tigers, Mariners and Giants. Ohtani has compiled a 10-5 record, 3.17 ERA, 1.064 WHIP, and 165:54 K/BB ratio across 130 2/3 innings (22 starts) as a pitcher this year. Oh, he's also hit 40 home runs and driven in 83 runs with a 1.068 OPS as a designated hitter.

Los Angeles Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani (finger) has recovered from the cramping in his right middle finger and he's scheduled to make his next start on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants, according to manager Phil Nevin. Ohtani has been dealing with cramping issues recently, and he's also dealt with some fingernail issues dating back to early July, but he's been given the green light to pitch next week. The 29-year-old All-Star looked just fine in his in his last start on Aug. 3 against the Seattle Mariners before leaving early, going four shutout innings with one walk and four strikeouts. Ohtani hasn't been quite as good on the mound as he has been with the bat in 2023, but he'll still be a must-start in fantasy as a pitcher on Wednesday against the Gigantes.

  • Shohei Ohtani Available To DH Friday

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani (hand) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting second on Friday against the visiting Seattle Mariners and right-hander Luis Castillo. Ohtani left his start on the mound prematurely on Thursday night against the M's due to cramping in his right middle finger. However, he stayed in the game as the DH and hit his major-league-leading 40th homer of the season in a losing effort. Ohtani is unsure if he'll be skipped in the starting rotation -- it's up to the team brass -- but he seems to be in no danger of missing time as a batter. The 29-year-old Japanese All-Star has been a bit more impressive as a hitter this year, too, batting .310/.413/.685 with a 1.098 OPS, 82 RBI, 14 steals and 84 runs scored. He's hitting .355 (22-for-62) with eight homers, 11 RBI, three steals and 21 runs in 19 games since the All-Star break. Keep him in your starting fantasy lineups.

  • Shohei Ohtani Unsure If He'll Skip A Start

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani (finger) said he was dealing with cramping in his right middle finger during his start on Thursday night against the Seattle Mariners, and he doesn't know if he'll need to skip his next start. The cramping caused him to depart after four innings on the mound, holding the M's scoreless on three hits while walking one and striking out four to drop his season ERA to 3.32 as a hurler. The 29-year-old two-way superstar has had issues with cramping in his legs recently as well, but he stayed in the game as the designated hitter and went 2-for-2 with his major-league-leading 40th homer of the year, two walks and two runs scored. The cramping issues are a bit concerning, but the Angels still don't seem terribly worried. Whenever Ohtani is on the mound or as the DH, the bottom line is that he needs to be in all starting fantasy lineups.

  • Shohei Ohtani Leaves Start Early With Cramps

    Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani (hand, fingers) left his start early on Thursday night against the Seattle Mariners with cramping in his right hand and fingers. Cramps have plagued Ohtani a few times in recent weeks, although before he had been dealing with leg cramps. The good news is he's staying in the game as the team's designated hitter, but it's something that should concern the Angels and fantasy managers moving forward. The 29-year-old two-way superstar might be getting to a point where his body is beginning to break down. He was solid on the mound in four innings before departing, allowing no runs on three hits while walking one and striking out four to lower his season ERA to 3.32. Until further notice, he remains a must-start in fantasy lineups as a pitcher and hitter.

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani goes to the hill for Thursday's start versus the Seattle Mariners. The 29-year-old has his work cut out vs. the Mariners to mirror last Thursday's performance when he pitched a shutout and whacked two home runs over two games of a doubleheader. But Ohtani has dominated the M's lately, boasting a 1.80 ERA with 56 strikeouts across 43 innings against them since 2021. It's worth mentioning the two-way sensation is also slashing .262/.379/.563 with 13 home runs, 38 RBI, and seven stolen bases as a batter opposing Seattle since 2020. Fantasy managers are obviously setting and forgetting the AL MVP front runner on both sides of their season-long lineups where applicable.

The 29-year-old Japanese slugger has seven home runs in 13 games since the All-Star break and leads major-league baseball with 39 long balls. Headshot for Shohei Ohtani

Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin said that he expects two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani to return to the starting lineup as the designated hitter on Friday for the start of a series against the Toronto Blue Jays after he left the second game of Thursday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers due to cramping. The 29-year-old Japanese All-Star threw a complete-game shutout in Game 1 of the doubleheader against Detroit and then homered twice in Game 2 before leaving with cramps, so it was still a pretty amazing day for Ohtani despite dealing with cramping. The Angels took him off the trade market on Wednesday and then went out and acquired two pitchers from the White Sox, so they are fully invested in making a postseason push in order to try and convince Ohtani to re-sign in the offseason when he hits the free-agent market.

It was the first complete game of the superstar's career. Ohtani's encore performance saw him smash two long balls during Game 2 before exiting. The MVP front runner became the first player to homer in one part of a doubleheader and toss a shutout in the other, per Elias Sports Bureau. It's just another notch on the belt of Ohtani's unheralded campaign. There's a good chance he is able to return to Friday's lineup for the start of a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays. • Angels Take Shohei Ohtani Off The Trade Market

After fielding various trade offers for Los Angeles Angels two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and holding internal discussions the last two days, the Angels decided on Wednesday to take Ohtani off the trade market and also become buyers in advance of the Aug. 1 trade deadline, according to a source familiar with the club's decision. The Angels entered play Wednesday four games out of a wild-card spot, so they are hoping they can make a push to return to the postseason for the first time since 2014. Ohtani is a free agent after the season and is expected to command a record contract that will make it difficult for the Angels to win a bidding war to retain him. Mike Trout and Ohtani have been teammates for six years. In that time, the team has gone 380-429 and have never finished higher than third place in the American League West. Ohtani currently leads the AL in homers (36), triples (seven), walks (62), slugging percentage (.668), OPS (1.066) and total bases (250).

Ohtani has dealt with blister issues on his pitching hand in the last month, and he's allowed 15 runs (14 earned) on 18 hits (six homers) while walking eight and striking out 21 in 16 1/3 innings in his three starts in July. He's believed to be past the blister issue, though, and his start on Thursday against Detroit is much too good to pass up for fantasy purposes.

The nick wasn't enough to remove Ohtani from the lineup as a batter; the two-way showstopper also went 3-for-3, smashing two solo home runs with one coming after the setback in the seventh frame. We're simply running out of words to describe the spectacle of what Ohtani is accomplishing on a daily basis. The AL MVP front runner boasts an MLB-best 28 homers, 64 RBI, .654 SLG, and 1.040 OPS with 11 stolen bases over 306 at-bats. Ohtani also sports a 3.02 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and 127:39 K:BB across 95 1/3 innings. Simply amazing.
