Ranger Suarez Likely To Begin Year On IL
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (forearm) is unlikely to be ready for the start of the season. The lefty still has inflammation in his left forearm and could begin the year on the injured list. He was sent for an MRI on Tuesday, and there was no structural damage. Matt Strahm seems like the pitcher to benefit from Suarez's injury and could pick up a few spot starts. Suarez posted a 3.65 ERA last year with a 1.33 WHIP and is best suited for NL-Only or deeper formats.

Phillies Notes: Strahm, Suarez, Plassmeyer
The Phillies are stretching lefty Matt Strahm out to handle a multi-inning relief option, tweets Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Manager Rob Thomson said this week that the organization’s goal is for Strahm to be built up to the point that he can handle three-inning stints by the end of camp, Lauber notes. He’s…

The Phillies announced a batch of injuries to reporters, including Matt Gelb of The Athletic (Twitter links). Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez and right-hander Nick Nelson have both been shut down, due to triceps soreness and a moderate hamstring injury, respectively. Catcher Garrett Stubbs is headed for an MRI on his sore right knee while fellow backstop…

Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (forearm) did some light throwing on flat ground on Tuesday at spring camp. Suarez has been dealing with tightness in his left forearm, which caused him to drop out of the World Baseball Classic, but the injury isn't considered to be very serious. The 27-year-old southpaw could still be ready in time for Opening Day, but it's unknown when he might get back into a Grapefruit League game. He'll likely need to throw a few bullpen sessions before that happens. Suarez doesn't overpower hitters and wasn't as good last year as he was during his 2021 breakout, but he has a secure rotation spot and is great at keeping the ball out of the air.

Ranger Suarez Dealing With Forearm Tightness
Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (forearm) said he felt some left forearm tightness in his outing against the Houston Astros while pitching for Team Venezuela on Wednesday, and he will rest for a few days. Suarez said he's not worried but wanted to get it checked out. There's a good chance the 27-year-old southpaw will need to pull out of the World Baseball Classic, but he could still be ready for Opening Day, barring a setback. In 29 starts in 2022, Suarez went 10-7 with a 3.65 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.33 WHIP and 19.5 percent strikeout rate in a career-high 155 1/3 innings pitched in his fifth year with the Phillies. Unsurprisingly, he fell back to Earth after a 2021 breakout, but his ground-ball tendencies make him a strong mixed-league streamer.

Ranger Suarez Avoids Arbitration With Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies and left-handed starting pitcher Ranger Suarez avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.95 million deal. In a full-time starter role in the big leagues for the first time, Suarez handled himself rather well in 2022, going 10-7 with a 3.65 ERA (3.87 FIP), 1.33 WHIP and 19.5 percent strikeout rate in 155 1/3 frames over 29 starts. Even more exciting was the fact that the 27-year-old southpaw was much better in the second half of the year and in the playoffs to help the Phillies to a World Series appearance. Suarez doesn't strike out a ton of batters (career 7.9 K/9) and isn't overpowering anyone, so he'll need to continue to induce weak contact in order to thrive for fantasy managers in mixed leagues in a hitter-friendly ballpark.
