  • Matt Chapman Reinstated And Starting Thursday

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and is playing third base and batting sixth in the order against the visiting Texas Rangers and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Outfielder Nathan Lukes was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Chapman is back with the team for the first time since going on the injured list on Aug. 28 due to a sprained finger, but he's now back as the team's regular starter at the hot corner. The 30-year-old veteran wasn't swinging the bat well before his injury, so fantasy managers may not want to expect him to return with a flurry of hits. Overall in his second year in Toronto, Chapman has hit .248/.338/.431 with 15 home runs, 36 doubles, a triple, 50 RBI, three steals and 61 runs scored in 520 trips to the plate and 125 games.

  • Previewing The 2023-24 Free Agent Class: Third Base

    Headshot for Ehire Adrianza

With the regular season winding down, a number of teams (and their fanbases) are already starting to turn their attention towards the offseason. Identifying free agent targets is a big part of that prep work, so it's worth taking an early look at the players who'll be available on the open market. Over the coming…

  • Blue Jays Hope Matt Chapman Returns Later This Week

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) is going through a full day of baseball activities on Tuesday, including hitting off a velocity machine. The hope is that he will return from the injured list later this week. When Chapman returns to the big-league roster, he'll return to regular duties at the hot corner, moving Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio back to bench roles in Toronto. In his second year with the Jays, Chapman has hit .248/.338/.431 with 15 home runs, 36 doubles, a triple, 50 RBI, three stolen bases and 61 runs scored in 520 trips to the plate and 125 games. He's been slightly disappointing from a power perspective after clubbing 27 home runs each of the previous two seasons in Oakland and Toronto.

  • Matt Chapman Hits And Throws On Friday

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) resumed baseball activity and began hitting and throwing on Friday. The 30-year-old has resided on the injured list since Aug. 28 because of a right middle finger sprain and remains with no clear return timeline. Chapman should be stashed wherever possible, but he's been an ordinary fantasy asset after winning April's Player of the Month award. The slugger was slashing .190/.256/.266 with one home run, three doubles, and six RBI in his most recent 22 games (79 at-bats) before going down. Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio have split work at the hot corner in Chapman's stead, but the platoon leaves neither deserving of much of much attention in deeper-mixed/AL-only leagues.

  • Blue Jays Place Matt Chapman On Injured List

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The Blue Jays have placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained right middle finger, per a team announcement. Infielder Ernie Clement has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take his spot on the active roster. Chapman exited yesterday’s game with discomfort in that finger, and manager John Schneider…

  • Matt Chapman Hits The Injured List

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The Toronto Blue Jays placed third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a right middle-finger sprain and recalled infielder Ernie Clement from the minors in a corresponding move. Chapman has been dealing with the issue for two weeks after initially hurting it in a weight-room accident. Clement is starting at shortstop and batting eight on Monday against Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray with Bo Bichette (quadriceps) also hurt. Davis Schneider is manning the hot corner and batting leadoff. In addition to Schneider, Santiago Espinal and Cavan Biggio are options at third base while Chapman is on the shelf. Chapman has struggled in August, batting .197 (15-for-76) with a homer, three doubles, six RBI, 29 K's and four runs scored in 21 games (20 starts).

  • Matt Chapman Undergoes MRI Exam

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) was scheduled to undergo an MRI exam on Sunday after aggravating his right middle finger in the game against the Cleveland Guardians, according to manager John Schneider. It's an injury that Chapman has been dealing with for the last couple of weeks after he jammed the finger while putting weight back on the rack. The 30-year-old missed three straight games after initially injuring his finger in the weight room, so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him sit out on Monday against the Washington Nationals. For now, fantasy managers should consider the veteran third baseman to be day-to-day. If he misses any time, Santiago Espinal is likely to fill in at the hot corner in Toronto.

  • Matt Chapman Removed From Sunday's Game

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman exited Sunday against the Cleveland Guardians with right middle finger inflammation. That's two big hits to the Blue Jays' offense and fantasy squads as Bo Bichette also left Sunday's game early. • Matt Chapman Returns From Finger Injury

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) is back at third base and is batting fifth in the order on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds and right-hander Brett Kennedy. Chapman missed several games this week due to inflammation in his right middle finger, but he's feeling better and will be back in the lineup on Friday night. He'll try to get going in the month of August, as he's only gone 10-for-44 (.227) with one homer, two doubles, five RBI, 15 strikeouts and three runs scored in 12 games (11 starts) since Aug. 1. The 30-year-old remains attractive in deep-mixed leagues in a potent Toronto lineup, though, and he has 15 home runs, a league-high 35 doubles and 49 RBI in 116 games played.

  • Matt Chapman Still Out Wednesday

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) remains out of action on Wednesday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Santiago Espinal will make another start at the hot corner for Toronto and will hit eighth in the batting order against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. Due to inflammation in his right middle finger, the Jays have held Chapman out since last Saturday. If the 30-year-old is unable to return on Friday for the start of a series against the Cincinnati Reds after an off day on Thursday, he might be in danger of going on the injured list. Chapman hasn't done anything special in 2023, but he remains an everyday player (when healthy) in a potent lineup. He currently sits with a .255 average (108-for-423) with 15 long balls, 49 RBI, three stolen bases and 60 runs scored.

  • Matt Chapman Remains Out Against Phillies

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) remains out of the starting lineup on Tuesday against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. Santiago Espinal is filling in at the hot corner and will hit eighth in the lineup against Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler. Chapman is dealing with inflammation in his right middle finger. He was scratched from Sunday's lineup and will remain out after Monday's scheduled off day. It doesn't sound like anything too serious, so the 30-year-old should be considered day-to-day this week. Chapman is Toronto's regular third baseman when healthy and he's currently hitting .255/.346/.449 with 15 home runs, 49 RBI, three stolen bases and 60 runs scored in 423 at-bats. He's cooled off so far in August, going 10-for-44 (.227) with only one homer, five RBI and three runs scored in 12 games (11 starts).

  • Matt Chapman Scratched With Finger Inflammation

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman (finger) has been scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Chicago Cubs with right middle finger inflammation. It looks like the Jays are being extra cautious with the veteran third baseman as this doesn't sound overly serious. After a hot start to the season, Chapman has really slowed down over the last few months. His overall numbers are still solid, however, with a .255/.246/.449 with 15 home runs, 49 RBI, and three stolen bases over 423 at-bats. Santiago Espinal is taking over at third base in Chapman's absence.

  • Matt Chapman Retreats To The Bench

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman will start Tuesday's contest against the Cleveland Guardians on the bench. It's a normal day of rest after he went hitless in four at-bats on Monday with two strikeouts against Cleveland. Santiago Espinal will draw the start at the hot corner and will hit eighth for the Jays against Guardians rookie right-hander Tanner Bibee. The month of August hasn't gotten off to a great start for Chapman, as he's gone 6-for-28 (.214) with a homer, two doubles, five RBI and three runs scored in seven starts. None of the 30-year-old's season-long numbers really stand out at the third base position in fantasy, but he remains an everyday player for a strong offense, which counts for something.

  • Matt Chapman Belts 15th Homer In Win

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a double, and a walk in Friday's 7-3 victory over the Boston Red Sox. The 30-year-old doubled in the third inning and walked during the fifth frame before cracking a ninth-inning insurance homer. Chapman has cooled off dramatically after being April's Player of the Month, slashing an ordinary. 214/.314/.386 with 10 four-baggers and 25 RBI over 295 at-bats since May 1. Even so, the former All-Star remains in front of the AL in doubles (34) overall.
