  • Matt Chapman With Two Home Runs, Five RBI Friday

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman collected three extra-base hits on Friday, including a double and two home runs to go along with five RBI and three runs scored, helping the Giants to an 8-3 win over the Padres. The veteran is now 4-for-9 to begin the season and is reminiscent of 2023 when he began the first month of the season hitting .384 with 53% of his hits going for extra bases (15 doubles, five HR). Of course, he hit .205 the rest of the way, so the Giants are hoping he can contribute for the entire season in 2024. ATC projections see him with a .233 BA and 23 home runs for the year.

  • Scott Boras Discusses Recent Free Agent Contracts

    Headshot for Cody Bellinger

The latter stages of the 2023-24 offseason were focused on the so-called "Boras Four." Each of Blake Snell, Matt Chapman, Cody Bellinger and Jordan Montgomery lingered on the open market beyond the start of Spring Training and signed deals below the forecasts from the early winter. • Matt Chapman Crushes Second Homer Of The Spring

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

San Francisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman went 2-for-4 with a homer in Friday's spring training game against the Chicago Cubs. Chapman's homer brought the Giants within one run in a wild game that ended in a 13-12 Giants victory. He has performed well in spring training for his new team, hitting for a .280 batting average and a .960 OPS in 25 AB. In 2024, ATC projections project Chapman to hit for a .235/.327/.437 slash line with 24 HR and 70 RBI. The home runs and RBI marks would be an improvement from his 2023 season in Toronto. With an ADP of 262.3, Chapman will likely only be a starting corner infielder for deeper leagues for managers willing to gamble on him in the unfriendly offensive environment at Oracle Park.

  • J.D. Davis Released By The Giants

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The San Francisco Giants have released infielder J.D. Davis on Monday. San Francisco signed free agent third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year, $54 million contract, making Davis expendable. Davis went unclaimed after the Giants placed him on waivers Saturday and will become a free agent. The Giants will pay a small portion of his $6.9 million contract. Davis slashed .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs, 69 RBI, 61 runs, and a stolen base over 544 plate appearances in 2023. The 30-year-old will look to latch onto an MLB team in search of first base or third base help. Now a free agent, Davis is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

  • Matt Chapman Signs Three-Year Deal With The Giants

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

Free agent third baseman Matt Chapman and the San Francisco Giants agreed on a three-year, $54 million contract on Friday. Chapman's deal includes an opt-out after the first two seasons, and he will make $20 million in 2024, $18 million in 2025, and $16 million in 2026. The 30-year-old has legit power, evidenced by his 56.4% hard-hit percentage and 17.1% barrel rate, ranking in the 98th percentile per Baseball Savant. Overall, Chapman slashed .240/.330/.424 with 17 homers and 54 RBI across 581 plate appearances with the Blue Jays last season. He will join a potentially potent Giants lineup with new acquisitions Jorge Soler and Jung Hoo Lee. Chapman should be in San Francisco's lineup daily and could easily pop 20-plus homers (ATC projects 24) in the heart of the Giants' batting order. However, with the recent signing, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Chapman's NFBC ADP of 275 to jump too much, making him a solid pick at his current ADP in upcoming fantasy drafts.

  • Giants Still A Potential Landing Spot For Matt Chapman

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The San Francisco Giants remain in play to sign free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman. Now that outfielder Cody Bellinger has re-signed with the Chicago Cubs, more attention has turned to Chapman as the best available position player on the open market during spring training. MLB Network's Jon Morosi doesn't think there's a better fit out there than the Giants for Chapman. The Giants could use some more pop in their lineup, and Chapman has played under manager Bob Melvin before in Oakland. The 30-year-old is an elite defender at third base and .234/.327/.429 with 44 homers and 130 RBI in his two years in Toronto. Chapman hasn't been a health risk, but his 30% strikeout rate is concerning, and a move to a pitcher-friendly park in San Francisco wouldn't be great from a player that regressed at the plate as the season went on in 2023.

  • Mariners Have Discussed Pursuing Matt Chapman

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The Seattle Mariners have already made several moves this offseason but "have discussed the possibility of adding" free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman, per the Seattle Times' Ryan Divish. The 30-year-old had an excellent start to the 2023 season but finished with a .240/.330/.424 slash line and 17 home runs, 66 runs scored, and 54 RBI in 581 plate appearances with the Blue Jays. Even with the down season, Chapman would be both an offensive and defensive upgrade to the team's current options, which include Luis Urias and Josh Rojas. While T-Mobile Park is not great for hitters, it would be a decent landing spot for Chapman from a fantasy perspective given the lineup the team has constructed this offseason.

Mike's Take In a recent draft I really wish I pulled the trigger on Chapman. He went in the 21st round and will surely move up in ADP when he signs. He was a fast starter last year too, and could couple well with a less established, upside corner infielder.

  • Yankees Showing Interest In Matt Chapman

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The New York Yankees are reportedly one of a number of clubs interested in signing free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman. The veteran remains one of the top free agents left on the market and perhaps the best infielder available. The 30-year-old tailed off after a blistering start at the plate in 2023 but still hit 17 home runs and 39 doubles, alongside a 10.7% BB% across 581 plate appearances, production that graded out 10% superior to the league average, as per his 110 wRC+. Of course, he remains an excellent defensive third baseman and boasts significant extra-base power with a career-high of 36 home runs set in the 2019 season. A lucrative multi-year deal is a lock for a player still in his prime.

  • Matt Chapman Could Be Fallback Plan For Cubs

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

If left-handed-hitting outfielder Cody Bellinger signs elsewhere in free agency this offseason, the Chicago Cubs could turn to right-handed-hitting third baseman Matt Chapman while seeking another left-handed bat some other way. Ultimately, the Cubs may want to give the majority of their designated hitter at-bats to Christopher Morel, as they did in 2023. The 30-year-old Chapman took a slight step backward offensively in his second year with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2023 and managed a modest 17 home runs despite finishing second in hard-hit rate with a barrel rate in the 98th percentile. His swing-and-miss issues are also concerning, but Chapman's deficiencies at the plate are offset by his excellent defense at third base.
