  • Previewing The 2023-24 Free Agent Class: Starting Pitcher

    Headshot for A.J. Alexy

We've been covering the upcoming free agent class at MLBTR, going through each of the non-pitching positions. But now it’s time to take the mound, beginning with the starters. Though it can be debated whether there’s a true ace in the mix, there’s plenty of arms here that would upgrade the rotation of any team.…

  • Orioles Shift Jack Flaherty To Bullpen

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

The Orioles will at least temporarily be moving Jack Flaherty from the rotation to the bullpen, manager Brandon Hyde told MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko and other reporters.  “It's a move for today right now,” Hyde stressed, but the skipper is “really interested” in seeing how Flaherty operates as a reliever, “whether it could be a length…

  • Jack Flaherty Being Moved To Bullpen

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty is being moved to the bullpen for at least the short term and he will be available in relief on Tuesday against the Houston Astros, according to manager Brandon Hyde. The skipper wouldn't rule out a potential return to the starting rotation for Flaherty down the road, possibly in the postseason. The former St. Louis Cardinals starter just hasn't been good in his seven starts for the O's after being acquired in a trade from St. Louis, as he's gone 1-3 in those seven starts while allowing 26 runs (25 earned) on 41 hits (seven homers) while walking 12 and striking out 38 in 31 2/3 innings. The 27-year-old will now lose what little fantasy value he had left to close out 2023.

  • Jack Flaherty Expected To Start Sunday Versus Colorado

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty (general soreness) will start Sunday's game against the Colorado Rockies. He was scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday versus the Blue Jays due to general soreness. The 27-year-old was rocked for seven runs over three innings in his previous start. He owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and a 125:62 K: BB across 123 2/3 innings in 2023. Flaherty has struggled recently by posting a 7.07 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP over his last three starts. Despite his recent struggles, Flaherty can be used as a streamer in a plus matchup against the Rockies.

  • Jack Flaherty Dealing With General Soreness

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said that right-hander Jack Flaherty is dealing with "general soreness" that occurs between starts, which is why he didn't make his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Hyde said the team is taking a precaution, but it remains to be seen if Flaherty will be able to make his next start. If the 27-year-old is able to make his next start, fantasy managers should be hesitant to rely on him. In his three starts with Baltimore since coming over at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals, he's allowed 11 earned runs on 14 hits (two homers) while walking and fanning 19 in 14 innings against the Jays, Astros and Padres.

  • Jack Flaherty Dealing With Undisclosed Issue

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Jack Flaherty (undisclosed) said he didn't make his scheduled start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays because of an undisclosed issue. "Sometimes you just don't bounce back the way you want to," Flaherty said. In his last start against the San Diego Padres on Aug. 15, Flaherty was hit hard to the tune of seven earned runs in just three innings in his third start with the O's. Apparently he isn't feeling that great after that outing, and he's unsure when he'll make his next start for the team. Flaherty has also allowed 11 runs in 14 innings in his three starts since Baltimore acquired him at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals.

  • Dean Kremer Replaces Jack Flaherty On Wednesday

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer is replacing right-hander Jack Flaherty for the start on Wednesday against the Toronto Blue Jays. There wasn't a reason given for the move to Kremer, so stay tuned for more information on Flaherty's status for the rest of the week. The Orioles are listing Thursday's starter as TBA for now. In Flaherty's last outing on Aug. 15 against the San Diego Padres on the road, he was blasted for seven runs in three innings, so perhaps the O's want to give him some extra rest before his next start. Kremer has been pretty solid in his last five starts dating back to July 24, allowing 11 earned runs on 23 hits (three homers) while walking 12 and striking out 23 in 29 1/3 innings.

  • Jack Flaherty To Make Orioles Debut Thursday

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

Right-hander Jack Flaherty will make his debut with the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday when he faces off against the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. The Orioles acquired Flaherty at the trade deadline on Tuesday for prospects Cesar Prieto and Drew Rom. The 27-year-old will try to help the O's make the postseason in 2023. The move to Baltimore isn't the best landing spot for Flaherty in a hitter's ballpark and in one of the toughest divisions in baseball. On top of that, he'll have an avoidable matchup for fantasy purposes on the road against the Blue Jays on Thursday. Flaherty went 7-6 with a 4.43 ERA (4.22 FIP), 1.55 WHIP, 54 walks and 106 strikeouts in 109 2/3 innings over 20 starts for the Cardinals before getting traded.

  • Orioles Acquire Jack Flaherty

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty has been traded to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. The O's needed to make a move to improve their rotation and getting Flaherty should help them. He has registered a 4.43 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, with a 106/54 K/BB ratio across 20 starts this season. In exchange, the Cardinals will receive infielder Cesar Prieto and left-hander Drew Rom from the O's. Flaherty is set to become a free agent after this season, so he'll be a short term rental for the Orioles playoff push.

  • Cardinals To Trade From Starting Rotation

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

The St. Louis Cardinals will look to deal a starting pitcher at the deadline, specifically one of Jordan Montgomery or Jack Flaherty, who are both on expiring contracts, according to Derrick Goold of MLB.com. The former has pitched to a solid 3.23 ERA with 96 strikeouts over 103 innings, while the latter is struggling again on the bump, as he owns a 4.29 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 22.2% strikeout rate, and 11.8% walk rate. A move to a contender would arguably give each arm more value in fantasy baseball with a better win potential.

  • Jordan Montgomery Leaves Game Due To Hamstring Injury

    Headshot for Jordan Montgomery

Cardinals left-hander Jordan Montgomery was forced to leave yesterday’s game after 4 1/3 innings due to a right hamstring injury.  The problem arose on the 65th of Montgomery’s 66 pitches, as “I just kind of slipped on the mound and I guess my body tried to catch myself,” the southpaw told reporters, including Lynn Worthy…

  • Jack Flaherty To Start Game 1 Against Yankees

    Headshot for Jack Flaherty

St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty (hip) will start Game 1 of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees on Saturday, with left-hander Matthew Liberatore set to go in Game 2. Flaherty had his last turn in the starting rotation skipped last weekend in London against the division-rival Chicago Cubs due to hip discomfort. The 27-year-old has struggled in 2023 to the tune of a 4.95 ERA (4.20 FIP), 1.60 WHIP, 44 walks, 80 strikeouts and a league-high eight hit by pitches in 80 innings over his 15 starts. However, he'll be on plenty of rest and is facing a Yankees lineup without All-Star slugger Aaron Judge (toe).
