  • Ian Happ's Recovery Has Plateaued

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ's (hamstring) recovery from a left-hamstring strain has plateaued, according to manager Craig Counsell. Happ hasn't played in a Cactus League game in three days and won't be in the spring lineup until Monday against the St. Louis Cardinals. He is focusing on exerted running. Counsell said Happ still isn't in danger of missing Opening Day next Thursday. "Goal is to put it behind him and it's not quite behind him," Counsell said. The 29-year-old could still avoid an injured list stint to begin the year, but fantasy managers shouldn't feel great about the possibility of Happ starting the year hot offensively, as he's also slashing just .111/.158/.167 with one RBI in 18 Cactus League at-bats. Happ was targeted as a No. 3 outfielder in fantasy drafts this spring.

  • Ian Happ Playing Left Field Tuesday

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is back in left field and is batting sixth in the lineup for Tuesday night's Cactus League game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. It's Happ's first game back on defense since straining his hamstring in spring training on Feb. 29, although he had returned to game action on Sunday as the designated hitter. The 29-year-old will be fine for Opening Day on March 28 and will be Chicago's regular left fielder after hitting .248/.360/.431 with 21 home runs 84 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 158 games a year ago. The former ninth overall pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati made his first career All-Star appearance in 2022 and offers a solid floor as a No. 3 outfielder for fantasy managers. Happ has cleared the fences 20-plus times in two of the last three seasons.

  • Ian Happ Back In Cactus League Lineup

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is serving as the designated hitter and batting leadoff in the team's Cactus League game on Sunday versus the Texas Rangers. It will be Happ's first time in a spring game since Feb. 29 after he was held out for over two weeks due to a right-hamstring strain. Barring a setback with his hamstring, the 29-year-old outfielder should return to playing defense by late next week and should be ready to go for Opening Day on March 28. The Cubs' starting left fielder, a former first-round pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati, had a solid year in 2023 after earning his first All-Star selection in 2022, slashing .248/.360/.431 with 21 homers, 84 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 691 plate appearances over 158 games. Happ doesn't do anything elite in any one category for fantasy managers, but he's a solid high-floor No. 3 fantasy outfielder.

  • Ian Happ "On Track" For Opening Day

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell said on Wednesday that outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is "on track for Opening Day." Happ is recovering from a left-hamstring strain in camp, but he's trending in the right direction and was able to face live pitching at spring training last week. Before the 29-year-old is allowed to get back into a Cactus League game, he's probably going to need to show the coaching staff that he can run at full speed without any setbacks. The switch-hitting outfielder was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and delivered another strong year in 2023, slashing .248/.360/.431 while setting career-highs in RBI (84), stolen bases (14) and runs scored (86) while also clubbing 21 home runs. Happ doesn't stand out in any one category for fantasy managers, but he makes for a solid No. 3 outfielder.

  • Ian Happ Taking Batting Practice Wednesday

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is taking batting practice in camp on Wednesday, which is a promising sign. Happ is recovering from a left-hamstring strain in spring training and is slowly working his way back. The Cubs are optimistic that the 29-year-old outfielder will still be ready for Opening Day on March 28, though, so fantasy managers shouldn't be too worried. The former first-round pick in 2015 out of Cincinnati was a first-time All-Star in 2022 and slashed .248/.360/.431 with 21 home runs, 35 doubles, four triples, a career-high 84 RBI, a career-high 14 stolen bases and a career-high 86 runs scored in 158 games for the Cubbies in 2023. It was a good sign that Happ was more patient last year, and although he's not a standout in any fantasy categories, he makes for a solid No. 3 outfielder.

  • Ian Happ Dealing With Hamstring Strain

    Headshot for Ian Happ

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ (hamstring) is dealing with a mild left-hamstring strain in camp and won't get into Cactus League games for a bit, according to manager Craig Counsell. However, the Cubs remain optimistic that Happ will be ready for Opening Day at the end of March. The switch-hitting outfielder followed up his first All-Star campaign in 2022 with a .248/.360/.431 slash line, 21 home runs, 35 doubles, four triples, a career-high 84 RBI, a career-high 14 stolen bases and a career-high 86 runs scored in 691 trips to the plate over 158 games in 2023. Not only did Happ clear 20 homers for the third time in his career, but he also took more walks. The 29-year-old is solid across the board and has a solid floor as a No. 3 outfielder for fantasy managers.
