  • Paul Sewald Looks Sharp In First Save Of Season

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald notched his first save of the season on Thursday, closing the door on the Cincinnati Reds in a 5-4 win. Sewald struck out a pair and didn't allow a baserunner in his inning of work. The 33-year-old veteran was making just his second appearance of the season after recovering from an oblique strain that put him out of action for all of April and the first week of May. After being used in a non-save situation in his first appearance on Tuesday, Sewald was put right back into the fire on Thursday and looked great, putting fantasy manager's worries at ease. He should continue to be the D-backs primary closer if he can stay healthy.

  • Paul Sewald Allows Homer In Non-Save Situation Tuesday

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) saw his first action of the season in Tuesday's 6-2 win over the Reds. Sewald was activated from the 15-day injured list earlier in the day after recovering from an oblique strain. He pitched the bottom of the ninth inning up by five and allowed a solo home run with a strikeout. The result wasn't great, but the encouraging thing is that Sewald is now a fantasy-relevant closer once again. He accumulated 34 saves last season with a 32.1% strikeout rate, so he should be slotted right back into fantasy manager's lineups.

  • Diamondbacks Reinstate Paul Sewald From Injured List

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

The Arizona Diamondbacks officially reinstated closer Paul Sewald (oblique) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned right-hander Scott McGough to Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. Sewald has returned from his oblique strain and should immediately return to closing duties for the Diamondbacks out of the bullpen, although he could see some extra days off as he gets eased back into the fold. In his absence, Kevin Ginkel had five saves in his 14 appearances, but he'll now go back into more of a setup role in front of Sewald. Sewald will be making his 2024 debut for the Snakes when he gets into a game after posting a career-high 34 saves with the D-backs and Seattle Mariners in 2023. Thirteen of his 34 saves came during the regular season with Arizona.

  • Paul Sewald Pain-Free And Ready To Return

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) is on the brink of returning from the 15-day injured list after he said that his minor-league rehab outing in rookie ball on Saturday went as planned. He plans on traveling with the team to Cincinnati to begin a series with the Reds on Tuesday, and manager Torey Lovullo said it was a great sign that Sewald woke up without any pain after pitching in the Arizona Complex League. The 33-year-old said he got a couple of strikeouts and ground balls during his outing over the weekend. Sewald took a step back on his rehab assignment after feeling some soreness following an outing with Triple-A Reno on April 23, but he said he hasn't "felt anything in 10 days now." When Sewald returns to the team's bullpen, he'll be the primary closer, so fantasy managers should scoop him up right away if he was dropped when he landed on the injured list.

  • Paul Sewald Likely To Be Activated On Tuesday

    Headshot for Kevin Ginkel

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald (oblique) is expected to be activated from the injured list ahead of Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. The 33-year-old has been sidelined since late March due to a left oblique strain. Luckily, it sounds like Sewald is finally ready to contribute to the D-Backs bullpen. That being said, Kevin Ginkel should only hold onto the closer role through the weekend before Sewald returns.

  • Paul Sewald To Throw Bullpen On Wednesday

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Sewald was supposed to throw a bullpen on Sunday, but the Diamondbacks pushed him back a bit after he experienced soreness in his oblique after a minor-league rehab outing with Triple-A Reno. While the team has slowed the 33-year-old veteran down slightly, it's great news that he's still on track to throw a bullpen this week. After Wednesday's session, Sewald could make another rehab appearance before being cleared to return to Arizona's bullpen. He has yet to make his 2024 debut, but Sewald should be stashed in all fantasy leagues as Arizona's primary closer when he's healthy. He had a career-high 34 saves in 65 regular-season outings with the D-backs and Seattle Mariners in 2023.

  • Paul Sewald's Rehab Slowed Due To Soreness

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Paul Sewald (oblique) will have his rehab slowed a bit due to soreness. He was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday but was scrapped after feeling soreness during a rehab stint with Triple-A Reno. The 33-year-old has been sidelined all season with a strained left oblique. He was on track to return from the injured list soon, but Sewald needs more time to recover from his oblique strain. Kevin Ginkel will continue to be Arizona's primary closer while Sewald is sidelined. Ginkel has been solid handling ninth-inning duties for the D-Backs, converting 4-of-6 saves while posting a 3.48 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and an 11:2 K: BB across 10 1/3 innings.

  • Paul Sewald Likely Needs Another Rehab Game

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday, and the team will likely have him appear in another rehab game if all goes well there. There was some optimism that Sewald's next appearance would come for the major-league club, but it sounds like fantasy managers will have to wait a few more days before the hurler is reinstated from the 15-day injured list due to a strained left oblique. Look for the 33-year-old right-hander to re-enter Arizona's bullpen and reclaim his closing gig sometime during Week 5 of fantasy baseball, which begins on Monday with a three-game series versus the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers. Righty Kevin Ginkel owns a solid 3.48 ERA (2.85 FIP), 1.16 WHIP, and 11:2 K:BB with four saves through 10 1/3 innings, but fantasy managers should be trying to make other arrangements for saves before he reverts to a setup role upon Sewald's return.

  • Paul Sewald "Getting Extremely Close"

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Cardinals closer Paul Sewald (oblique) is back in Arizona working with the medical team to determine whether he will need another minor-league rehab assignment or if he's ready to rejoin the D-backs. Manager Torey Lovullo said Sewald is "getting extremely close" to returning from the 15-day injured list. The 33-year-old made his first rehab appearance on Tuesday with Triple-A Reno and gave up an unearned run on two hits while walking one and striking out two, and that may be all he needs before returning to Arizona's bullpen. He has yet to pitch in the big leagues in 2024 due to a strained left oblique, but when he's back, he will operate as the team's full-time closer. Make sure he's not available for some reason on the waiver wire in your fantasy league.

  • Paul Sewald To Begin Rehab Assignment On Tuesday

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald (oblique) is set to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno on Tuesday. The right-hander continues to work his way back from a Grade 2 left oblique strain that has sidelined him since the beginning of the season. The 33-year-old has been able to throw bullpen sessions without any issues. He should need a few rehab appearances before he's ready to return to the big league bullpen. Sewald should get the bulk of the saves once he's back. Fantasy managers who are in need of relievers or save might want to stash Sewald if he's available.

  • Paul Sewald To Throw Another Bullpen On Tuesday

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) will throw his second bullpen session of his recovery process on Tuesday. In his first bullpen session on Saturday, Sewald threw 18 pitches after initially landing on the injured list with a Grade 2 left-oblique strain. The 33-year-old could be getting close to going on a minor-league rehab assignment, but oblique injuries for pitchers can be hard to predict. Until Sewald is able to return to Arizona's bullpen, he should remain stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues. Kevin Ginkel has served as the Snakes' fill-in closer since Sewald landed on the IL, with Ryan Thompson and Kyle Nelson setting him up in the late innings. Sewald had a career-high 34 combined saves in 2023 with the D-backs and the Seattle Mariners.

  • Paul Sewald Scheduled For Bullpen Session On Saturday

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday. This will be Sewald's first bullpen session since he suffered his Grade 2 oblique strain. It may still be some time before Sewald is able to come off the injured list, but being able to progress to a bullpen session is a good sign for the 33-year-old. Fantasy managers should continue to keep an eye on the closer's progress and keep him stashed on their rosters until he is able to be activated. In the meantime, expect Kevin Ginkel to continue to get save opportunities for Arizona until Sewald is back.

  • Paul Sewald Resumes Throwing

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald (oblique) threw up to 60 feet on Tuesday and was asymptomatic, according to manager Torey Lovullo. The skipper called the session a good sign in Sewald's progression as he tries to recover from a Grade 2 oblique strain that he suffered late in spring training. The injury landed the 33-year-old on the injured list to begin the 2024 season. He must still progress to throwing long toss before he can resume throwing bullpen sessions and facing live hitters. It all means that fantasy managers should not expect Sewald to come off the injured list when he's eligible on April 9, but he should remain stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues. The D-backs haven't had a save situation arise yet early on, but if one does pop up, Kevin Ginkel is expected to be first in line for save chances in the desert with Sewald on the shelf.

  • Paul Sewald Heading To Injured List

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Paul Sewald (oblique) is going to open the regular season on the injured list, according to manager Torey Lovullo. This is a tough break for the D-Backs as Sewald has reportedly suffered a Grade 2 left oblique strain. The organization has not given a timetable for Sewald's return, but he'll likely miss at least most of April. The expectation is that Kevin Ginkel will operate as the closer until Sewald returns. Possibly, Miguel Castro and Joe Mantiply will be in the mix as well. For now, Ginkel looks like the pitcher worth rostering in fantasy formats while Sewald recovers.

  • Paul Sewald Using A Changeup This Spring

    Headshot for Paul Sewald

Arizona Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald has added a changeup to his arsenal this spring training. He hasn't thrown a changeup with any kind of regularity since the 2020 season. Upon arriving in Seattle before the 2021 season, he rode his fastball/slider combination into the closer's role for the Mariners. Through four Cactus League appearances, Sewald hasn't allowed a single run. Of the three changeups he's thrown that were put in play, he's recorded four outs. In the last three seasons, he has 65 saves, a 2.95 ERA, 136 ERA+ and 12.2 K/9. His 2.75 xERA, .189 xBA, 85.9 mph average exit velocity, 32.1% strikeout rate and 29.9 hard-hit percentage all ranked among the 94th percentile or better across the majors in 2023. Sewald doesn't have a high-velocity fastball like most closers, so the addition of a changeup should make his heater more effective. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 13 fantasy closer in the game.
