Rangers Interested In Reunion With Jordan Montgomery

Left-hander Jordan Montgomery figures to be among the most sought-after free agents on the starting pitching market this offseason. With righty Aaron Nola having already returned to the Phillies on a seven-year deal earlier this week, only recently-posted right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and reigning NL Cy Young award winner Blake Snell compare rank ahead of Montgomery…
Nov 24 · MLB Trade Rumors Texas Rangers Jordan MontgomeryJordan Montgomery Still On Rangers Radar

Starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery was a big piece of the Texas Rangers championship season, and they are hoping to bring him back for 2024 and beyond. With an ERA of 3.20 and an FIP of 3.56 in 2023 for the Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals, Montgomery should be on most teams' radar this offseason. The soon-to-be 31-year-old was a top-30 starting pitcher for fantasy purposes in 2022 and 2023, so he should be able to keep that pace for a couple more seasons at least. Montgomery has pitched at least 30 games in three straight seasons, and while his strikeout rate has decreased over that time, he's gotten better in the walk and ERA departments.

Yankees Showing Interest In Jordan Montgomery

The Yankees seem to be considering a reunion with former rotation stalwart Jordan Montgomery, according to the New York Post’s Jon Heyman. The club has been “looking at” Montgomery as a possible offseason signing, and it appears to be slightly more than just due diligence, as Heyman writes that “the Yankees have been particular about…

Starting pitching is a clear priority for the Red Sox. Boston’s new chief baseball officer Craig Breslow acknowledged as much last week, although they’re certainly not alone in that pursuit. That could extend to the top end of the market. Jeff Passan of ESPN wrote on Tuesday that the Sox were targeting front-line starting pitching.…

After winning the first World Series title in franchise history this fall, the Texas Rangers are expected to be one of the biggest players on the free-agent market this offseason. "I expect the Rangers are going to be aggressive this offseason," Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports and The Athletic said on his weekly show, "Foul Territory." "They are going to be emboldened by their World Series triumph." Texas could be in play for two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani and closer Josh Hader. Hader would help shore up a Texas bullpen that had a 4.77 ERA (seventh-worst in MLB) during the regular season. A stacked starting rotation means the Rangers probably won't be as active in the starting pitching market, which means they are unlikely to make a big push to re-sign lefty Jordan Montgomery.

Jordan Montgomery Being Discussed By Red Sox

Free-agent pitcher Jordan Montgomery is garnering interest on the open market from the Boston Red Sox, who have discussed the left-hander with his representation at the general manager meetings. The 30-year-old is fresh off of a World Series championship with the Texas Rangers after the club acquired him from the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the trade deadline. Montgomery had a healthy 2.79 ERA across 11 regular-season starts for the Rangers before posting a 2.32 ERA across 31 postseason frames en route to a World Series title. The Red Sox are in search of rotation help after finishing 21st with a 4.52 ERA from their starters in the 2023 campaign, while Montgomery has a strong track record as a reliable run-preventor who can handle plenty of innings on the heels of a 3.20 ERA across a career-high 188 2/3 innings this past season.

As expected, Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery will start Game 5 of the American League Championship Series in Texas on Friday against the division-rival Houston Astros. Montgomery dominated the Astros in Houston in Game 1 of the series on Sunday, going 6 1/3 scoreless innings for the win while walking only one and striking out six. The 30-year-old southpaw has given up five runs (four earned) on 20 hits (one homer) while walking just two and fanning 13 in 17 1/3 innings over his three postseason starts this year. Montgomery's only blemish was in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles, when he gave up all five runs (four earned) on nine hits (one homer) in just four innings for a no-decision.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (forearm) has been added to the team's ALCS roster. Gray was placed on the 15-day injured list back on September 29 with forearm irritation but the goal but he's on track to pitch in the Championship Series, which starts on Sunday in Houston. Jordan Montgomery is set to start Game 1 for Texas while Nathan Eovaldi will take the mound for Game 2. Max Scherzer (shoulder) was also added to the ALCS roster and he would be the presumptive starter for Game 3, so in all likelihood, Gray will work out of the bullpen in this series. Both him and Scherzer will likely be on pitch counts as well.

Max Scherzer On Rangers' ALCS Roster

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (shoulder) is on the ALCS roster. The Championship Series begins Sunday in Houston. The veteran hurler suffered a teres-major strain in his throwing shoulder back in September and appeared to be a long shot to pitch in the postseason at one point. However, he has worked his way back and should be able to pitch in the ALCS. With Jordan Montgomery and Nathan Eovaldi scheduled to start Games 1 and 2, respectively, Scherzer could end up starting in Game 3 or 4 when the series shifts back to Arlington. When Scherzer does make his postseason debut with the Rangers, he will surely be on a pitch count.

Jordan Montgomery To Start ALCS Game 1

The Texas Rangers will give the ball to left-hander Jordan Montgomery in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday in Houston against the Astros. Montgomery has had one stellar outing and one bad outing so far in his two starts this postseason. He tossed seven shutout innings with no walks and five strikeouts in Game 1 of the wild-card series to get the win over the Tampa Bay Rays, but then he surrendered five runs (four earned) in four innings for a no-decision in Game 2 of the Division Series against the Baltimore Orioles. The 30-year-old southpaw has mostly been good in his four career playoff outings with a 2.55 ERA. In his lone start against the Astros in 2023 while with the St. Louis Cardinals on June 27, Montgomery got the win, giving up just two runs (one earned) while walking one and fanning six in 6 2/3 innings.

Luckily, the Rangers offense was up to the task and put up 11 runs in the win to bail Montgomery out of a loss. The 30-year-old southpaw was making just his fourth career playoff appearance (three starts) after tossing seven shutout innings to beat the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the wild-card series last week. Jordan Montgomery Takes The Bump For Game 2

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery is slated to start Game 2 of the ALDS against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Montgomery was excellent during Texas' Game 1 wild-card triumph over the Tampa Bay Rays, pitching seven scoreless innings on six hits and no walks with five strikeouts. It added to a short resume of playoff prosperity for the 30-year-old, having now held the opposition to a lone run across 13 2/3 career postseason frames. Montgomery has dealt with Baltimore on numerous occasions from his time in the AL East with the New York Yankees, delivering a sharp 2.79 ERA with 52 punchouts in his last 10 starts (51 2/3 IP) against the O's since 2020. The veteran southpaw hopes that success translates over into Sunday's matchup.

Jordan Montgomery To Start Game 1 Of Wild-Card Series

Texas Rangers left-hander Jordan Montgomery will get the ball for the Rangers in Game 1 of the wild-card series on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Montgomery, who was acquired at the trade deadline from the St. Louis Cardinals, was great in the second half of the year for the Rangers with a 4-2 record, 2.79 ERA (3.27 FIP), 1.09 WHIP, 13 walks and 58 strikeouts in 67 2/3 innings over 11 starts. The 30-year-old southpaw is the obvious ace of the pitching staff in Texas with Max Scherzer (shoulder) unavailable for the wild-card series. Montgomery did not face the Rays at all in the 2023 regular season. He got off to a rough start in September, but he allowed just two earned runs with five walks and 22 K's over 27 innings in his final four starts heading into the postseason.
