  • Yordan Alvarez Collects Four Hits Tuesday

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez had another solid game at the plate in Tuesday's 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Royals. Alvarez went 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, and two RBI. The 26-year-old has picked things up after stumbling early and is now slashing .347/.407/.653 with four home runs, nine runs scored, and 11 RBI in 54 plate appearances. He is on pace to deliver top-tier fantasy production once again.

  • Yordan Alvarez Gets On Track With Two Solo Blasts

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez busted his slump in Wednesday's 8-0 drubbing of the Toronto Blue Jays, going 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Entering the evening just 3-for-24 this season, Alvarez blasted a solo homer to get the scoring started in the third inning before driving in Jose Altuve for another run during the fourth frame, capping off a monster game with a mammoth solo shot in the sixth. The huge effort gets the 26-year-old slugging superstar's batting average up to .241 with a .796 OPS over his first 29 at-bats of the young season ahead of the start of the Lone Star Series on Friday against the defending-champion Texas Rangers. Alvarez prepares to face off with two right-handers and two lefties during the four-game set, but he's as matchup-proof that a left-handed fantasy hitter can come.

  • Yordan Alvarez's Removal Monday Wasn't Due To Injury

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez was removed from Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Miami Marlins early, but it wasn't due to injury, with manager Joe Espada saying it was planned all along for Alvarez to take only two at-bats. The 26-year-old left-handed slugger had an injury scare a few days ago in camp, too, but that turned out to be just an eye irritation. Alvarez has proven to be injury-prone so far in his career, but his offensive exploits in a stacked Astros lineup outweigh the potential health risks. The former American League Rookie of the Year in 2019 has made the All-Star team in each of the last two seasons and has exceeded 30 homers and 90 RBI in each of the last three seasons in Houston. He's ranked as the No. 15 overall fantasy player at RotoBaller and should be fine for Opening Day on March 28 against the New York Yankees.

  • Yordan Alvarez's Foot Is Fine

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said that outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (eye) left Friday's Grapefruit League game early because of an allergic reaction in his left eye and not due to a foot injury after he fouled a ball off his right foot in his only at-bat of the game. Alvarez's eye issue isn't considered serious and he'll be just fine for Opening Day on March 28 when the Astros host the visiting New York Yankees. The 26-year-old left-handed slugger has one of the most dangerous bats in all of baseball, but he's also a pretty big injury risk for fantasy managers. Despite the injury risk, RotoBaller has the Cuban ranked as the No. 15 overall fantasy player in baseball due to his immense power and run production in one of the strongest lineups in MLB.

  • Yordan Alvarez Exits Early Friday

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (foot) left Friday's Grapefruit League contest against the Philadelphia Phillies in the first inning after fouling a ball off of his right foot. However, he was walking to the clubhouse on his own and did not seem to be in any pain. The slugger was playing left field on Friday, a spot where he will see increased time this season with the Astros likely to give first baseman Jose Abreu more reps at desingnated hitter. It's been a big spring for the 26-year-old, who is hitting .360 (9-for-25) with one homer, one double, three walks, eight strikeouts, and a .949 OPS across 28 trips to the plate. He was elite again in the 2023 season, slugging 31 homers and knocking in 97 runs alongside a .293 average and a .990 OPS across 114 games. He projects to hit .296 with 39 homers and 107 RBI by ATC in the 2024 season.

  • Yordan Alvarez Blasts First Spring Home Run

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros designated hitterYordan Alvarezwent 2-3 with a solo HR and two runs against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. The solo shot was his first homer of the spring. With the two-hit game on Saturday, Alvarez increased his batting average to .400 with a 1.071 OPS in 15 at-bats. He is expected to hit second in Houston's order this year after primarily hitting from the three spot in 2023. ATC projects Alvarez to be very productive yet again with 39 HR and 107 RBI with a .296/.397/.593 slash line. With an NFBC ADP of 14.7, Alvarez will be a crucial part of fantasy managers' rosters and is a surefire top-15 pick heading into 2024 fantasy drafts.

  • Astros Plan To Hit Yordan Alvarez Second In Batting Order

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said his plan right now is to bat outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez second in the batting order this year. The ideal top four of Espada's lineup is second baseman Jose Altuve at leadoff, followed by Alvarez, third baseman Alex Bregman and outfielder Kyle Tucker. Alvarez hit mostly out of the third spot last year and is an RBI machine, racking up an incredible 298 RBI in the last three seasons for the Astros. The former American League Rookie of the Year in 2019 could see fewer chances to drive in runs hitting in the two-hole, but it won't be enough to drastically affect his fantasy appeal as one of the best overall hitters in baseball. The 26-year-old is a pretty big injury risk, but he should still come off the board late in the first round or early in the second round of fantasy drafts.

  • Yordan Alvarez Could See More Time In Left Field

    Headshot for Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros manager Joe Espada said on Thursday that he hopes that outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez can play more in left field in 2024. Alvarez made 40 starts in left field last season but didn't play there much in the second half after returning from an oblique injury. The 26-year-old oft-injured left-handed slugger isn't going to stay healthier with more time spent in the outfield, but the Astros may not have a choice if they're forced to move Chas McCormick to center field if Jake Meyers isn't producing. If Alvarez didn't spend so much time in the training room and missing games due to injuries, there would be a case to be made that he's the best pure hitter in the game for fantasy purposes. He played in 114 games in 2023 due to hand, arm and oblique injuries.
