  • Red Sox Might Be Interested In Gleyber Torres Again

    Headshot for Gleyber Torres

The Boston Red Sox identified New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres as a trade target last season, with outfielder Alex Verdugo being of interest to New York, according to major-league sources. It appears the two rivals might be returning to that conversation again this offseason. Torres is viewed by some in Boston as an excellent fit, offering the kind of stability at second base that the team didn't have in 2023. The 26-year-old has one more year of arbitration eligibility and is predicted to make just over $14 million next season. Torres finished with an .800 OPS with 25 home runs, 13 stolen bases and a .273 batting average in 158 games for the Yanks in 2023 as one of the most reliable players at the keystone in the league. The swap would make a lot of sense, but the Yankees and Red Sox don't typically make deals with each other.

  • Teams Inquiring About Alex Verdugo

    Headshot for Alex Verdugo

MLB teams are inquiring about the availability of Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo at the general manager meetings this week in Scottsdale, Arizona. Verdugo was excellent with the glove and was a finalist for the American League Gold Glove in right field, his offensive numbers dipped to a league-average 100 OPS+ in 2023. He was also benched twice during the year by manager Alex Cora, which added fuel to the discussion around his fit with the team moving forward. Boston also has a surplus of outfielders, mainly left-handed-hitting outfielders, and Verdugo is entering his final year of arbitration and is projected to make $9.2 million in 2024. The 27-year-old finished his fourth year in Beantown with a .264/.324/.421 slash line with a career-high-tying 13 home runs, 37 doubles, five triples, 54 RBI, five stolen bases and 81 runs scored in 142 games.

Uncertainty seems to be the running theme of the Red Sox right now.
