  • Jordan Romano Placed On The 15-Day Injured List

    Headshot for Jordan Romano

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Jordan Romano (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list with right-elbow inflammation on Saturday, June 1. In a corresponding move, Brendon Little was promoted from Triple-A. The closer has been dealing with soreness in his elbow since Wednesday of this week and will now be sidelined for an extended period. In addition, the 31-year-old battled a similar injury earlier in the spring, which delayed his start to the season. Romano has pitched only 13 innings this season to the tune of a poor 6.59 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 4:13 BB:K ratio. As a result, Yimi Garcia and Chad Green are both candidates to see the majority of save opportunities while Romano remains sidelined.

  • Blue Jays Option Erik Swanson

    Headshot for Erik Swanson

Prior to yesterday's game, the Blue Jays announced that they reinstated right-hander Chad Green from the injured list. In a corresponding move, fellow right-hander Erik Swanson was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. Swanson getting sent down is something that would have been hard to fathom just a few months ago. The righty made 57 appearances for...

  • Blue Jays Reinstate Chad Green, Option Erik Swanson To Triple-A

    Headshot for Chad Green

The Toronto Blue Jays reinstated right-hander Chad Green (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned right-hander Erik Swanson to Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move. Green will be available out of the bullpen for Toronto for Tuesday night's game in Chicago against the White Sox for the first time since being put on the injured list in mid-April with a right-shoulder strain. The 33-year-old veteran tossed three scoreless innings on a minor-league rehab start with Buffalo and should be ready to immediately jump into his late-inning setup role in front of closer Jordan Romano. Green is valuable in holds leagues and as a handcuff to Romano. Swanson has come apart in 2024 and will look for answers on the farm. The 30-year-old has allowed 14 earned runs on 20 hits (five homers) while walking four and fanning 10 in 13 2/3 relief innings in 2024.

  • Chad Green Could Return Tuesday

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chad Green (shoulder) could be activated from the injured list as early as Tuesday, according to manager John Schneider. Green has been out since the middle of April with a right-shoulder strain but is ready to return to the big-league bullpen after throwing three scoreless innings for Triple-A Buffalo on his minor-league rehab start. Green opened the season as Toronto's primary ninth-inning guy, but that was with Jordan Romano on the injured list. The 33-year-old reliever could still be valuable in fantasy leagues that count holds, but as long as Romano is healthy, Green will serve in a late-inning setup role for the Jays. Before going on the IL, Green went 1-0 with two saves, a 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 frames.

  • Chad Green May Need Just One More Rehab Outing

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Chad Green (shoulder) said he felt good during a nine-pitch minor-league rehab outing on Sunday for Triple-A Buffalo. Green will throw another inning for the Bisons on Wednesday, and the Blue Jays are hoping he'll be ready to return from the injured list after that. The 32-year-old veteran tossed a scoreless inning on Sunday and struck out one. He landed on the injured list in the middle of April after straining his right shoulder, but Green appears to be healthy now and ready to rejoin Toronto's bullpen as a late-inning setup man in front of closer Jordan Romano. When Romano opened the 2024 season on the injured list himself, Green filled in as the Jays' primary ninth-inning man. Green is a handcuff option for Romano and can also be useful in holds leagues.

  • Chad Green Throws Bullpen Session

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Chad Green (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Friday, which was his first time throwing off a mound since he was placed on the injured list back on April 20 with a right-shoulder strain. As long as the 32-year-old veteran doesn't encounter any setbacks along the way, he should certainly be back in Toronto's bullpen by the end of the month. The former 11th-round pick by the Detroit Tigers in 2013 out of Louisville isn't as attractive in fantasy now that regular closer Jordan Romano is back and healthy, but Green still plays a key role as a late-inning setup man and can carry fantasy value in holds leagues when he's active. Before his injury, he was 1-0 with two saves, a 2.35 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and seven strikeouts in 7 2/3 relief innings.

  • Chad Green To Rehab For 3-7 More Days

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Chad Green (shoulder) is rehabbing for three to seven more days, at which point the team is hopeful that he can resume throwing. Green is recovering from a teres major strain in his right shoulder after landing on the injured list. The 32-year-old veteran hurler is probably at least several weeks away from being able to return to Toronto's bullpen. Green opened the 2024 season with increased fantasy importance because of injuries to both Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson. He took advantage of the short-term opportunity for save chances in Toronto, recording two saves with a 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while walking two and striking out seven in 7 2/3 frames. When Green returns from the IL, he'll return to a late-inning setup role in front of Romano.

  • Chad Green Lands On The Injured List

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Chad Green (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right teres major strain. Green has been sidelined since Monday due to shoulder soreness and will miss at least the next few weeks with the move to the IL. The 32-year-old owned a 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, and a 7:2 K: BB across 7 2/3 innings in 2024. Nate Pearson was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding move to replace Green in the bullpen. Pearson posted a 1.11 WHIP and a 9:3 K: BB across 6 1/3 innings in 2024. With Jordan Romano (elbow) returning from injury and Yimi Garcia as the team's top setup man, Pearson is buried in Toronto's bullpen and mainly a fantasy option in deep leagues that reward holds.

  • Chad Green Managing Shoulder Soreness

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green (shoulder) was unavailable during Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the division-rival New York Yankees due to shoulder soreness he felt following Monday's appearance against the Yankees. Manager John Schneider hopes Green is good to go by Friday for the start of a three-game weekend set on the road against the San Diego Padres. The 32-year-old right-hander picked up two saves and helped bridge the gap until Jordan Romano and Erik Swanson were able to rejoin Toronto's bullpen on Tuesday, and he has a strong 2.35 ERA and 1.04 WHIP while striking out seven batters and walking two over 7 2/3 innings during the 2024 regular season. With that said, Green doesn't hold a whole lot of fantasy appeal at the moment outside of leagues that weigh holds.

  • Chad Green Locks Down Second Save

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green picked up his second save of the season on Tuesday versus the Seattle Mariners. The veteran tossed 1 1/3 innings and allowed a walk with one strikeout. Green has now appeared in five games and allowed two runs, but has been perfect in two save opportunities. It's encouraging to see Green in a high leverage role after dealing with injuries the past couple of seasons, but his time as a closer is nearing its end with closer Jordan Romano (elbow) and eighth inning arm Erik Swanson (forearm) both on their rehab assignments and nearing their returns. Regardless, Green can still have value in leagues that count holds.

  • Chad Green Nabs Save Against Former Team

    Headshot for Chad Green

Toronto Blue Jays relief pitcher Chad Green secured Friday's save in the 3-0 win over the division-rival New York Yankees, yielding two hits in a scoreless ninth inning. Friday was technically Toronto's first save situation of the season, but Green notched a win in Tuesday's victory over the Houston Astros after working the ninth frame. His usage suggests he's first in line for save situations until the Jays get star closer Jordan Romano (elbow) and setup man Erik Swanson (forearm) back from the injured list, making Green worth a fantasy add as a short-term source of saves for the time being. The 32-year-old right-hander missed most of 2023 in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, but he's given up only one run with one strikeout over 3 1/3 frames to begin the year. He's not worth a sizable chunk of fantasy managers' FAABs with Romano's return appearing not far off, though.

  • Chad Green To Lead Closer Committee In Toronto?

    Headshot for Chad Green

TSN's Scott Mitchell writes that the Toronto Blue Jays will use a closer-by-committee setup and matchup-based choices to open the season with relievers Jordan Romano (elbow) and Erik Swanson (forearm) starting the year on the injured list. Mitchell says that his pecking order for saves would be Chad Green first, followed by Yimi Garcia and Tim Mayza. Green, 32, has 11 career saves in eight big-league seasons and posted a career-worst 5.25 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, four walks and 16 K's in just 12 innings last year in Toronto in his return from Tommy John surgery. He struck out 11 hitters in 7 2/3 Grapefruit League innings this spring but also allowed seven runs. While Green might get first crack at saves in Toronto to open the year, the fact that both Garcia and Mayza could also be involved means that fantasy managers shouldn't invest much in any of these three names off the waiver wire.

  • Chad Green, Yimi Garcia Could Be Options For Saves Early On

    Headshot for Yimi Garcia

With both Toronto Blue Jays relief pitchers Jordan Romano (elbow) and Erik Swanson (forearm) dealing with injuries with Opening Day right around the corner next week, Chad Green and Yimi Garcia are two clear candidates to fill in for the closer role if Romano and Swanson aren't ready or are eased back in. Nate Pearson could also be a candidate to make the Opening Day roster if one or both of Romano and/or Swanson are on the injured list. Green has just 11 career saves, but he has enough high-leverage experience to know the ropes. Garcia saved 15 games for the Marlins in 2021 and stepped into the role a few times in Toronto last year when Romano was available, making him the best one to speculate on in deep fantasy leagues.
