  • German Marquez Set To Begin Throwing Bullpen Sessions This Week

    Headshot for German Marquez

Colorado Rockies starting pitcher German Marquez (elbow) is scheduled to start throwing bullpen sessions this week, according to general manager Bill Schmidt. Marquez, who underwent Tommy John surgery last season, hasn't had any bullpen sessions since his surgery. The 29-year-old veteran started just four games last season before landing on the injured list with an elbow issue. In those four starts, he compiled a 4.95 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 17:3 K/BB Ratio over 20 innings. The Rockies GM noted that Marquez should make it back to the starting rotation after the 2024 All-Star break, barring any setbacks. Marquez has had effective stints throughout his eight-year career but he's hard to trust every time he takes the mound due to his team context and home ballpark.

Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez (elbow), who hasn't pitched in a big-league game since April 26, 2023, due to Tommy John surgery, threw a bullpen session in spring training on Friday. Marquez still has a ways to go in his recovery from elbow reconstruction and isn't expected to return to the team's starting rotation until after the All-Star break, so he should go undrafted in all single-year mixed leagues in 2024. The 28-year-old Venezuelan had a career-worst 4.95 ERA (4.71 FIP) and 1.36 WHIP with 63 walks and 150 strikeouts in 181 2/3 innings over 31 starts for the Rockies in his last full season in 2022. Marquez has had an ERA under 4.00 just twice in his eight major-league seasons, and not since the shortened 2020 season, when he made only 13 starts.

  • Rockies Notes: Marquez, Senzatela, Freeland, Bryant

    Headshot for Kris Bryant

Pitching injuries defined the Rockies’ 103-loss 2023 season, as the team had a seemingly endless string of hurlers missing time with both minor and major ailments.  The top of the rotation was hit particularly hard, with German Marquez and Antonio Senzatela both undergoing Tommy John surgeries that will stretch their time on the injured list…
