  • Phillies Interested In Blake Snell On Short-Term Contract

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The Phillies re-signed Aaron Nola early in the offseason, made a big push to sign Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and a chance still remains that they could make one more splash in the free agent pitching market.  According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Philadelphia would be open to bringing Blake Snell into the fold, but not on…

  • Giants Still Interested In Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The Giants made another major addition yesterday with the signing of Matt Chapman, and might not yet be done with their March shopping.  Both Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle and Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area report that Blake Snell remains a target for the club, as the Giants continue to have…

  • Giants Becoming Favorites To Land Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The San Francisco Giants appear to be firming as the favorites to land free-agent left-hander Blake Snell. A deal could come within the next 24-48 hours, reportedly, while the Giants are seen ahead of the New York Yankees who have an offer on the table for the two-time Cy Young winner. Snell took down the NL Cy Young Award in the 2023 season with the San Diego Padres. He worked to an MLB-best 2.25 ERA across 32 starts, posting a 14-9 record alongside a hefty 31.5% K%. Interestingly, he led all of baseball with 99 walks but was able to strand 86.7% of his base-runners, a figure well above his 78.2% career mark. While regression is likely, he would be a major boon to the Giants' beat-up rotation while his durability and strikeout figures will continue to serve fantasy managers quite well.

  • Mets Looking At Michael Lorenzen, Other Pitchers

    Headshot for Mike Clevinger

The New York Mets have recently checked in on free-agent starting pitchers, including right-hander Michael Lorenzen, according to league sources. However, the communication likely reflects a desire to stay connected if they have another injury rather than imminent, serious interest. New York's top starter, Kodai Senga, has already been shut down for three weeks due to a strain in the back of his shoulder. FanGraphs projects the Mets to have the sixth-worst rotation in the majors, so adding more pitching depth would be a good idea. They are banking on a bounce-back from Luis Severino and steps forward from Sean Manaea and Tylor Megill. Other options to beef up the rotation besides Lorenzen include lefties Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery and righty Mike Clevinger.

  • Giants, Blake Snell Deal A 50-50 Possibility

    Headshot for Blake Snell

San Francisco Chronicle's Susan Slusser reported Tuesday that the San Francisco Giants remain in the hunt for free-agent starting pitcher Blake Snell, and that the possibility of a deal is "50-50." No further details were mentioned. The team's rotation is already short-handed to begin the season, with Alex Cobb (hip) and Robbie Ray (elbow) on the injured list and several other potential starters dealing with injuries. Snell has had an injury history in the past, but he was healthy enough to win the National League Cy Young award last season and would provide a boost to the team to start the season, and even after some of their mainstays return.

  • Yankees Still Have A Chance To Land Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

Free-agent left-hander Blake Snell and the New York Yankees continue to discuss potential scenarios, but so far it's just talk without much progress. Snell would give the Yankees both reigning Cy Young winners and make them the clear favorite in the American League. However, any deal for Snell would also trigger a 110 percent tax, meaning the move would cost more than double his salary. The Yankees continue to keep the lines of communication open with Snell, but after talking on Monday, the two sides don't appear to be any closer to a deal. One Yankees person characterized the chances for a deal as extremely low. The 31-year-old Snell is going to cost $30 million a year, so it's unclear how many other teams remain in the market for him. So far, the Yankees have made the only known public offer to Snell -- for five years, although they are believed to be willing to go six years at close to $28 million per year.

  • Yankees Have Made An Offer To Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

Free-agent left-hander Blake Snell, the National League Cy Young winner in 2023 with the San Diego Padres, has an official offer on the table from the New York Yankees, according to a source. However, the Los Angeles Angels and San Francisco Giants remain possibilities for Snell as well. It's a pretty big surprise that Snell remains on the open market with pitchers and catchers having already reported to spring training last week. The 31-year-old southpaw has now won a Cy Young in the NL and AL in his career and had a league-best 2.25 ERA last season despite a league-worst 13.3 percent walk rate. His high walk rate could be one of the biggest reasons interested teams aren't willing to pay Snell's high asking price on a new contract. Fantasy managers should expect regression from Snell in 2024, especially if he lands with the Yankees in the tough AL East.

  • Angels Linked To Plenty Of Free Agents

    Headshot for Cody Bellinger

The Los Angeles Angels have been linked to plenty of free-agent names, including left-hander Blake Snell and outfielder Cody Bellinger, but for now, word is circulating that they may not go for the biggest free agents. However, owner Arte Moreno has been a big free-agent player before, so he could change course. The Angels have a decent nucleus and enhanced their bullpen with the addition of right-hander Robert Stephenson and lefty Matt Moore, but that isn't going to compensate for the loss of two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani. The team has also been linked to Joey Votto and Enrique Hernandez and are one of several teams considering starters Michael Lorenzen and Eric Lauer.

    Headshot for Chris Bassitt

Free-agent pitcher Blake Snell, who is coming off his second Cy Young Award, has had his market "quietly monitored" by the Toronto Blue Jays, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The two-time Cy Young winner is reportedly seeking a multi-year deal of around $240 million. Numerous teams, including the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Giants, and Phillies, have all been linked to Snell throughout free agency, but no one has come close to signing him. Toronto is just doing its due diligence by keeping tabs on the southpaw. He would certainly fit in nicely with a strong Toronto rotation that features Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt. For now, Snell remains a free agent.

  • Yankees Make Opening Offer To Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The New York Yankees have made an opening offer to top free-agent starter Blake Snell. But little to no evidence of significant progress on Snell or two other top rotation targets in Jordan Montgomery and Chicago White Sox right-hander Dylan Cease, the Yankees are starting to look more seriously at right-hander Marcus Stroman. The Yankees remain far apart on a Snell deal and are starting to believe that Montgomery prefers to return to the Texas Rangers or go somewhere else. New York seems to believe Snell, the 2023 National League Cy Young winner, wants to come to the Bronx and are guessing the main competition may come from the Giants and Angels. If the Yankees can land Snell, they'd have both of last year's Cy Young winners at the top of their starting rotation.

  • Marcus Stroman, Yankees Have Mutual Interest

    Headshot for Marcus Stroman

The New York Yankees and free-agent pitcher Marcus Stroman reportedly have mutual interest. Stroman has reached out to the club and has let them know he is interesting in signing with them, but there has not been a contract offer from the Yankees at this time. The veteran remains one of the better free-agent starting pitching options available on the open market but is a tier below the likes of reigning Cy Young winner Blake Snell and former Yankee Jordan Montgomery. Stroman is coming off a solid season that saw him post a 3.95 ERA across 27 outings (25 starts), while he is the owner of a career 3.65 ERA in 231 appearances in the majors. The Yankees are looking to add to their rotation behind ace Gerrit Cole, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2023.

  • Blake Snell Interested In Playing For Yankees

    Headshot for Blake Snell

Free-agent left-hander Blake Snell has privately expressed interest in playing for the New York Yankees, according to SNY's Andy Martino. At the moment, Snell seems a more likely fit in New York than Jordan Montgomery, with whom they have also talked. The Yankees are looking to aggressively add to their starting rotation and are planning an active month of January, according to league sources familiar with the team's thinking. Snell is coming off his second career Cy Young award after going 14-9 with a 2.25 ERA and 1.19 WHIP with 234 strikeouts in 180 innings over 32 starts with the San Diego Padres, so his price is going to be high. The 31-year-old's 2024 fantasy value is going to be high no matter where he lands given his swing-and-miss stuff, but the tough American League East wouldn't exactly be the ideal landing spot.

  • Giants Still Looking To Add Big Names In Free Agency

    Headshot for Cody Bellinger

The San Francisco Giants missed out on Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto in free agency, both of whom ended up with the rival Dodgers, but they remain interested in some of the biggest names available such as Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, and Matt Chapman. The club did ink Korean outfielder Jung Hoo Lee this winter but is still hunting for upgrades on the offensive side of the baseball. Bellinger is coming off of a big rebound season on a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs. Snell took down the NL Cy Young Award on the back of a 2.25 ERA across 32 starts with the Padres in 2023. Chapman's bat tailed off as the season moved along but he still posted excellent defensive metrics while his 110 wRC+ at the dish last season was 10% above the league average. The Giants have also been connected to Japanese free agent pitcher Shota Imanaga.

After missing out on Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto, it's uncertain if the New York Mets will pursue top remaining free-agent starters Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, who are also drawing interest from the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Boston Red Sox and others. The Mets have been linked more to the next tier of free-agent starters, including Shota Imanaga and right-hander Lucas Giolito. Giolito is also receiving interest from Boston. He had a rough finish to last season but has five straight 175-strikeout seasons. • Angels Have Had Recent Dialogue With Blake Snell

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The Los Angeles Angeles "have had recent dialogue" with free-agent starting pitcher Blake Snell, per MLB Network's Jon Morosi. It is expected that the 2022 National League Cy Young winner will wait for Yoshinobu Yamamoto to sign before making his own free-agent decision. However, the Angels are not expected to be involved in the Yamamoto sweepstakes, which means they could potentially be more aggressive in conversations with Snell. Snell's potential fantasy value in 2024 will be determined partly by where he signs. From that perspective, it would be ideal to see him sign with a team with strong offensive support, something the Angels may not be able to fully offer.

  • Mets To Pursue Blake Snell If Yoshinobu Yamamoto Signs Elsewhere

    Headshot for Blake Snell

The New York Mets will reportedly target free-agent starting pitcher Blake Snell if they do not end up signing Yoshinobu Yamamoto this offseason. While Yamamoto is the team's top pitching target, his high intrigue and potentially hefty deal could result in the Mets not landing him. Snell is the reigning National League Cy Young winner and put together a 14-9 record with a 2.25 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 13.3% walk rate, and 31.5% strikeout rate in 32 starts with the Padres. Snell is also reportedly on the radar for the Red Sox, but they are also engaged in talks with Yamamoto. At this point, it seems as though the market for Snell will become clearer once Yamamoto signs with a team.
