Cubs Option Frank Schwindel

The Chicago Cubs optioned first baseman Frank Schwindel to Triple-A Iowa after their game on Tuesday, clearing the way for outfielder Franmil Reyes to join the active major league roster after he was claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Guardians on Monday. Schwindel was hitting .229/.277/.358 with eight home runs, 36 RBI, 23 runs scored and 58 strikeouts in 292 plate appearances over 75 games for the Cubs this year. Chicago is expected to move Patrick Wisdom over to first base, with Reyes serving regularly as the designated hitter. Reyes hit 30 homers in 2021, but he really struggled in 70 games with Cleveland this year, going 56-for-263 (.213) with nine home runs and 28 RBI. Perhaps a change of scenery will be good for the power-hitting right-hander.

Frank Schwindel Starts On Bench Tuesday

Chicago Cubs first baseman Frank Schwindel is not in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In seven games in the month of July, Schwindel is hitting just .200 (5-for-25) with no homers and two RBI. Overall, the 30-year-old right-handed hitter is batting .233/.279/.372 with eight home runs, 35 RBI and 23 runs scored in 272 plate appearances and 69 games for the Cubbies. Alfonso Rivas is starting at first base and hitting eighth, while All-Star catcher Willson Contreras will serve as the designated hitter and bat second against Pirates right-hander Bryse Wilson. Contreras is one of the better hitting catchers in baseball, while Rivas has hit just .225 on the year with three home runs, 23 RBI and three stolen bases in 169 at-bats.

Frank Schwindel Slowly Making Progress

Chicago Cubs first baseman Frank Schwindel (back) is slowly getting better, according to manager David Ross. The 30-year-old is expected to resume baseball activities soon, which is great news. Schwindel has been sidelined since June 18 due to back tightness. He'll likely require a minor league rehab assignment before rejoining the Cubs roster. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Schwindel back until mid-July. Alfonso Rivas should continue to start at first base until Schwindel returns.

Frank Schwindel Goes To IL Saturday

Chicago Cubs first baseman Frank Schwindel was placed on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain on Saturday. Schwindel left Friday's game early with the injury, and after evaluation the Cubs have determined he will need a stint on the IL. The 29-year-old appeared to have turned a corner a few weeks back, but has since slid back into a cold spell at the dish, going 7-for-39 without an extra-base hit over his last 11 games. If you don't have any IL spots open, Schwindel is certainly droppable in most leagues. Alfonso Rivas was called up to replace Schwindel.

Frank Schwindel Leaves Early Friday

Chicago Cubs first baseman Frank Schwindel (back) left the game early on Friday against the Atlanta Braves due to lower-back tightness. Schwindel suffered the injury while running to base in the second inning and was replaced in the third inning. The Cubs will continue to evaluate the 29-year-old heading into Saturday's action against Atlanta, and fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day until we know more. Schwindel has been decent from a power perspective, hitting eight home runs and driving in 33 in 227 at-bats coming into the day on Friday, while he's slashing .238/.283/.388 with 21 runs scored in 61 games played.

Frank Schwindel Stays Hot Saturday

Chicago Cubs first baseman Frank Schwindel went 3-for-5 with his eighth home run of the season on Saturday. Schwindel was recalled from the minors on May 9th after a one-day stint in AAA where he didn't even make it to the team before being recalled. Since then, he has hit .281/.333/.542 with 6 HR and 19 RBI in 26 games. He is currently working on a three-game multi-hit streak and has once again become a fixture at the top of the Cubs lineup. He is back to being fantasy relevant, and should be considered on any team in need of some help at first base.
