  • Offseason In Review: Tampa Bay Rays

    Headshot for Jason Adam

The Rays typically make at least one significant trade that sends out a veteran player to reduce spending and acquire controllable talent. Tampa Bay did that again in a major deal with the Dodgers, but it was otherwise a relatively quiet winter at the Trop. Major League Signings RHP Phil Maton: One year, $6.5MM (including buyout…

  • Rays Planning Utility Role For Amed Rosario

    Headshot for Amed Rosario

The Rays deepened their infield mix with yesterday’s signing of Amed Rosario to a one-year contract, but despite the 28-year-old’s experience as a starting shortstop in both Cleveland and in New York, he’ll be ticketed for a multi-position role with his new club. Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander tells Marc Topkin of the…

  • Jose Caballero Expected To Be Primary Shortstop

    Headshot for Jose Caballero

Tampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said that infielder Jose Caballero is still expected to be the team's Opening Day shortstop despite the addition of Amed Rosario on a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Tuesday. Rosario is going to bounce around between the middle infield and corner outfield against left-handed pitching. The 27-year-old Caballero was acquired from the Mariners in an offseason trade to give the Rays a backup plan in the wake of Wander Franco's off-the-field issues. Taylor Walls (hip) is going to miss the first month of the season, but he'll give Tampa another option at the 6 when he returns. Caballero didn't display much power in his first taste of big-league action in 2023 and is probably only going to be attractive in AL-only leagues for his speed -- he stole 26 bases in 104 games for Seattle in 2023.

  • Amed Rosario To Serve In Utility Role

    Headshot for Amed Rosario

Tampa Bay Rays president of baseball operations Erik Neander said that the plan is to play infielder Amed Rosario at both middle-infield positions and in the corner-outfield spots in 2024 after signing him to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Tuesday. Rosario will give the Rays more insurance at the 6 with Wander Franco potentially never playing for the team again given his off-the-field issues, but Jose Caballero will remain the primary option at shortstop. The 28-year-old Rosario has been a lefty killer in his career, so between multiple positions with the Rays in 2024, the Dominican infielder should play rather regularly when the club faces a left-handed pitcher. He'll be most attractive as a low-cost DFS play against southpaws, but with modest power and speed, Rosario's fantasy ceiling is low.

  • Amed Rosario Agrees With Rays On One-Year Deal

    Headshot for Amed Rosario

Free-agent infielder Amed Rosario and the Tampa Bay Rays agreed on Tuesday to a one-year, $1.5 million deal, according to sources. The 28-year-old will bring a strong bat against left-handed pitching and should get at-bats at shortstop, second base and potentially in the corner-outfield spots in 2024. It's more insurance for the Rays at shortstop with the possibility that Wander Franco will never play in the big leagues again. Rosario is a career .272 hitter in seven major-league seasons, and he slashed .263/.305/.378 with six home runs, 58 RBI, 15 stolen bases and 70 runs scored in 142 games last year with the Guardians and Dodgers. The move to Tampa makes the veteran infielder more attractive as a deep-mixed corner infielder and for DFS lineups against lefties, who he has hit .298/.339/.467 against in his career.
