  • J.D. Davis Activated And Starting Friday

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

The Oakland Athletics reinstated infielder J.D. Davis (thigh) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned infielder Nick Allen to Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. The A's also selected the contract of infielder Brett Harris from Vegas and moved right-hander Freddy Tarnok (hip) to the 60-day IL. Davis is playing first base on Friday night and hitting fifth in his return against Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers. The 31-year-old corner infielder will return to a weak .196/.255/.373 slash line with two home runs and two RBI, but he's worth rostering in AL-only leagues as he should be a regular for the A's at either corner infield spot. Davis went 3-for-15 in four minor-league rehab games with Vegas.

  • A’s Option Ryan Noda

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

The A's optioned first baseman Ryan Noda to Triple-A Las Vegas following today's win over the Pirates. Oakland hasn't announced a corresponding move, but MLB.com's Martín Gallegos tweets that they could reinstate third baseman J.D. Davis from the 10-day injured list before Friday's series opener against the Marlins. It's a quick turn of events for the A's...

  • J.D. Davis Continues Rehab Assignment

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Oakland Athletics third baseman J.D. Davis (thigh) will continue his minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas through at least this Thursday. Davis played in his first rehab game with Vegas on Sunday and went 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a strikeout as the designated hitter. The A's would like to see him play in several more games down on the farm and return to the field before they consider activating him from the 10-day injured list. The 31-year-old veteran should eventually return to everyday duties for the A's at third base when he's healthy. In his first 14 games for the A's before getting hurt, he went just 10-for-51 (.196) with two home runs and two RBI in 55 plate appearances. Darrell Hernaiz has been playing often at the hot corner of late with Davis sidelined.

  • J.D. Davis Hits Injured List, Esteury Ruiz Recalled

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Oakland Athletics infielder J.D. Davis (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday, and outfielder Esteury Ruiz was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. Davis exited Sunday's 7-6 win over the Washington Nationals due to a strained right groin, and he'll need to spend some time on the shelf. The 30-year-old was operating as Oakland's primary third baseman, but he's batting just .196 (10-for-51) with two solo home runs over 14 games this year. The speedy Ruiz is available off the bench for the A's on Monday and could eventually reclaim his spot as the club's everyday center fielder after a spell in the minor leagues. The 25-year-old contact hitter slashed .326/.423/.581 with three homers, eight RBI, and seven stolen bases across 51 plate appearances in the minors, and he led the American League with 67 swipes a year ago. Ruiz should be added in fantasy for steals where available.

  • J.D. Davis Day-To-Day With Groin Strain

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Oakland Athletics third baseman J.D. Davis (groin) is being considered day-to-day after suffering a right-groin strain in Sunday's win over the Washington Nationals. Davis felt tightness in his groin area in his at-bat in the fourth inning that may have been the result of an impressive catch he made on a fly ball that was hit in the top of the fourth inning. He will undergo an MRI exam on Monday, so fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Davis isn't in the lineup for the start of a series against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. Tyler Nevin replaced Davis at third base on Sunday and would likely make the start on Monday if Davis is held out. Abraham Toro and Darell Hernaiz are other options for the hot corner if Davis' injury lingers and he's forced to the injured list.

  • J.D. Davis Pulled Early On Sunday

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Oakland Athletics third baseman J.D. Davis (groin) was forced to exit early during Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals. Davis was replaced after a few at-bats due to a right groin strain. The severity of the injury is unknown, but it wouldn't be shocking to see Davis miss some time. If he does, Tyler Nevin figures to see more playing time at the corner infield spots. Davis wasn't offering much fantasy value anyway, so his absence probably won't be a significant loss for many.

  • J.D. Davis Belts Two Home Runs Friday

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Oakland Athletics third baseman J.D. Davis hit two home runs Friday in a 6-4 loss to the Guardians. The first was a solo shot to right-center off Cleveland starter Logan Allen and the second went to dead-center, again a solo shot off of the lefty Allen. Those were his only two hits in the game, going 2-for-4 and making him 3-for-7 on the young season. The veteran should get plenty of playing time in Oakland and is both third base and first base eligible in some leagues, giving him some additional appeal. The 30-year-old hit 18 homers last season, the most he's had in a season since a career-high of 22 in 2019.

  • J.D. Davis Signs With A's

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

Free-agent third baseman J.D. Davis signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with the Oakland Athletics on Friday. The deal includes another $1 million in performance-based incentives. Davis will stay in the Bay Area after spending all of 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, where he slashed .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs, 69 RBI and 61 runs scored in 144 games and 546 plate appearances. He was expendable in San Fran when the Giants signed Matt Chapman. Given the state of the perpetually rebuilding A's roster, the 30-year-old right-handed slugger should immediately slot in as Oakland's starting third baseman in 2024, boosting his fantasy appeal as a corner-infield option in deep-mixed leagues. Davis has a career .261/.343/.432 slash line with a .775 OPS and 68 homers in seven major-league seasons.

  • J.D. Davis Released By The Giants

    Headshot for Matt Chapman

The San Francisco Giants have released infielder J.D. Davis on Monday. San Francisco signed free agent third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year, $54 million contract, making Davis expendable. Davis went unclaimed after the Giants placed him on waivers Saturday and will become a free agent. The Giants will pay a small portion of his $6.9 million contract. Davis slashed .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs, 69 RBI, 61 runs, and a stolen base over 544 plate appearances in 2023. The 30-year-old will look to latch onto an MLB team in search of first base or third base help. Now a free agent, Davis is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

  • Giants Place J.D. Davis On Waivers

    Headshot for J.D. Davis

The San Francisco Giants placed infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis on waivers on Saturday. The writing was on the wall for Davis, who can play first base, third base, and left field, to be let go as the odd man out following San Fran's Matt Chapman signing. A waiver claim is possible for Davis, who slashed a modest .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs, 23 doubles, and 69 RBI across 546 trips to the plate for the Giants a year ago. The 30-year-old former New York Met could serve as a decent bench bat for teams in need of one that can produce against both right-handers and left-handers. Unless Davis lands somewhere that presents him with an everyday role, however, anything else is unlikely to be enough to get him on 2024 draft radars this spring.
