Luis Severino Won't Throw Until He's Pain-Free
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino (lat) said he won't begin throwing again until he's pain-free, but he thinks the team caught the issue before it became a major concern. Severino said the lat strain is in a different spot than last year. Even if he wanted to rush back, the Yankees wouldn't let that happen. The 29-year-old right-hander will start the 2023 campaign on the injured list, but in a best-case scenario, he could end up missing only three to four turns through the rotation. Hopefully, he'll pick back up throwing after around a week. Severino's price will drop slightly in upcoming fantasy drafts, but when he's healthy, he has the ability to post near-ace numbers for his fantasy managers.

Luis Severino Has Low-Grade Lat Strain
New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that starting pitcher Luis Severino (lat) has a low-grade lat strain. While nothing is official yet, it basically means that Severino will open the 2023 regular season on the injured list, and he may not make his season debut until late April or even early May. It's another blow to New York's rotation, with Carlos Rodon (forearm) and Frankie Montas (shoulder) also injured. Severino, 29, also dealt with lat issues in 2022, which kept him out from the middle of July through late September. It should make fantasy managers think twice before taking him in upcoming drafts. Alongside Clark Schmidt and Domingo German, Jhony Brito could also be added to the team's rotation to begin the year with Severino now hurt.

Luis Severino Struggling With His Slider
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino is feeling fine physically in spring training, but the right-hander's results haven't been great so far. "That my slider sucks, that's what they're telling me right now," Severino said. "I need to work more on my slider. It's not the movement, it's just location actually." He allowed two home runs to the Detroit Tigers in the Grapefruit League game on Friday and has now given up five long balls in 8 2/3 innings this spring. Injuries have been the main issue for the 29-year-old in recent seasons. He shouldn't have many restrictions in 2023 after posting a strong 3.18 ERA and 1.00 WHIP with 112 strikeouts in 102 innings last year. Injuries are a risk, but Severino still has plenty of upside when he's right.

Nestor Cortes Expected To Begin Season As Fifth Starter
New York Yankees southpawNestor Cortes(hamstring) is expected to start off the season as the fifth man of the Yankees rotation. According to manager Aaron Boone, the Yankees will ramp up Cortes to begin the season as a precaution to heal his hamstring completely. Cortes withdrew from the WBC after an apparent hamstring injury forced him to back out. The Yankees will start the season with a rotation consisting ofGerrit Cole,Carlos Rodon,Luis Severino,Clarke Schmidt/Domingo German, and Cortes. The 28-year-old will be bumped up to the fourth spot once Boone is comfortable employing him with no setbacks. Cortes is poised for another promising performance in 2023 and hopes to make his second All-Star appearance.

Luis Severino Slims Down
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino made changes to his diet in the offseason and dropped 15 pounds during the winter as he enters the final year of his contract in 2023. Severino made only three starts from 2019-21 due to various injuries, including Tommy John surgery, but he had a nice 3.18 ERA with 112 strikeouts in 102 innings (19 starts) as he bounced back in 2022. The 29-year-old right-hander had his $15 million option picked up for this year, but he wants to pitch a full season and stay healthy all year. The Yankees have not talked about an extension, but Severino said he'd be open to the idea of finishing his career in pinstripes. Fewer restrictions this year should give him more fantasy upside, but he's got to stay on the mound in order to cash in on it. RotoBaller has him ranked as the No. 37 fantasy starter, but Severino has clear top-20 upside if he avoids more injuries.

Luis Severino Won't Pitch In World Baseball Classic
New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino will not pitch for the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic because general manager Brian Cashman didn't allow him, according to a source. It makes sense with 2022 being Severino's first full season back from Tommy John surgery. The 28-year-old right-hander also missed two months last year due to a lat injury, but he had a solid 3.18 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 112 strikeouts over 19 starts and 102 innings when he was healthy for the Yanks. New York picked up Severino's $15 million option for 2023. RotoBaller currently has Severino ranked as the No. 38 fantasy starter heading into spring training. There is injury risk with him, but he should be a solid No. 3/4 starter otherwise.
