  • Frankie Montas Expects To Pitch This Year

New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) said that he "for sure" expects to pitch for the team in 2023. He doesn't have a target date set yet, and he will resume playing catch in around nine to 10 weeks after having right shoulder surgery on Feb. 21. Perhaps the 29-year-old right-hander will be able to help the Yankees down the stretch, but there's little chance that he'll do much for fantasy managers in 2023. Montas admitted he wasn't 100 percent healthy after the Yankees acquired him from the Oakland Athletics at last year's trade deadline. In his eight starts for the Yankees in the second half, he had a 6.35 ERA (4.93 FIP), 1.54 WHIP, 15 walks and 33 strikeouts in 39 2/3 frames.

  • Frankie Montas Undergoes Shoulder Surgery Wednesday

New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) underwent surgery to clean up his right labrum on Wednesday. The good news is that doctors didn't have to touch his rotator cuff, so Montas is expected to begin a throwing program in 12 weeks. The 29-year-old right-hander and the Yankees are hoping that he will be cleared to resume throwing in late May or early June, but there's a good chance that he'll miss all of the first half of the 2023 season. Montas will eventually be placed on the 60-day injured list to kick off the campaign. The Dominican hurler's fantasy value obviously takes a massive hit due to the injury, especially coming off a rough eight-start stretch in the Bronx in 2022 in which he had a 6.35 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 39 2/3 innings.

  • Frankie Montas Will Undergo Shoulder Surgery, Could Miss Season

New York Yankees starting pitcher Frankie Montas (shoulder) will reportedly undergo shoulder surgery on Tuesday, per a tweet from ESPN's Jeff Passan. Per Passan's tweet, New York manager Aaron Boone said the surgery "could cause him to miss the season." Montas made 27 starts last season, throwing 144.1 innings combined between the Oakland Athletics and Yankees. He logged five pitcher wins in those 144.1 innings while pitching to a 4.05 ERA and a 3.78 FIP to go along with 142 strikeouts and 43 walks allowed. As of now, the American League East club's other starting pitching options include Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Nestor Cortes, Luis Severino, Domingo German, and Clarke Schmidt.

  • Surgery On The Table For Frankie Montas

New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) continues to be evaluated, and a surgical option is "on the table," according to pitching coach Matt Blake. However, surgery would "not necessarily" be season-ending. The Yankees are doing their due diligence with Montas' shoulder injury with spring training starting for pitchers and catchers this week. The 29-year-old is expected to miss at least the first month of the season, and he'll likely miss most of the year if surgery is needed, although an exact timetable probably wouldn't be known until after he has surgery. The bottom line is that Montas is an extremely risky fantasy pick this year until we know more about whether or not he'll need to go under the knife. The Dominican starter had a 6.35 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in his eight starts for the Yanks in 2022 after being acquired from the Oakland Athletics.

  • Players That Could Move To The 60-Day IL Once Spring Training Begins

Just about every baseball team has a full 40-man roster now, with the Astros the only team with an open spot at the moment. That means that just about every transaction, be it a free agent signing or a waiver claim, requires a corresponding move. However, that could soon change as the injured list is…

  • Frankie Montas To Miss First Month Of Season

New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) is expected to miss the first month of the regular season in 2023 due to shoulder inflammation that he dealt with at the end of 2022, according to sources. Montas is eight to 10 weeks behind in his offseason training. The 29-year-old missed two weeks with the Oakland Athletics last year and then landed on the injured list on Sept. 20 with the Yankees after eight lackluster outings in pinstripes. The Yanks sent left-handers JP Sears and Ken Waldichuk, along with two minor-leaguers, to acquire Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the A's at last year's trade deadline. Montas had a 6.35 ERA in 39 2/3 innings in his eight starts for New York in 2022, but they're hoping he'll be an important part of their rotation in 2023 once he returns from his shoulder issues.

  • Frankie Montas Gets $7.5 Million From Yankees

The New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million deal with starting pitcher Frankie Montas to avoid salary arbitration on Friday. The Yankees acquired Montas at the trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics last August to beef up their rotation, but the only made eight starts in pinstripes and dealt with a right shoulder issue. He had an ERA over 6.00 in the Bronx and finished 2022 with a combined 5-12 record, 4.05 ERA (3.78 FIP), 1.25 WHIP and 23.4 percent strikeout rate in 144 1/3 innings over 27 starts. With better health in 2023, the 29-year-old right-hander could bounce back for the Yankees and fantasy managers, but it will admittedly be much tougher pitching in Yankee Stadium and the tough American League East for a full season.
