  • Frankie Montas Dealing With Forearm Bruise

    Headshot for Frankie Montas

Cincinnati Reds right-hander Frankie Montas (forearm) left Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels early with a right-forearm bruise. X-rays on his arm showed no fracture after he was hit in the arm by a comebacker. It's good news that the 31-year-old doesn't have any kind of break in his arm, but Montas said that he's likely to miss his next start due to soreness and swelling. He recorded just two outs in Sunday's game before being hit in the arm, so he also may not be able to go very deep in his next start after taking at least one turn through the rotation off. The injured list is still a possibility if Montas isn't feeling great after missing one start. Montas has been up and down through his first five starts with the Reds in 2024, going 2-2 with a 4.19 ERA (5.33 FIP) and 1.45 WHIP with 10 walks and 14 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.

  • Frankie Montas Leaves Sunday's Game Early

    Headshot for Frankie Montas

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas (undisclosed) left Sunday's game early after being hit by a comebacker off outfielder Taylor Ward. The ball struck Montas in his pitching arm, which was why he had to leave the game. Brent Suter replaced Montas as a result. There have not been any updates on the extent of the injury, so fantasy managers will have to keep a close eye on his status before his next scheduled start. Montas was off to a great start with his new team, as he did not allow an earned run until his third start. Since then, Montas has allowed nine earned runs. Brent Suter is an option to replace Montas in the rotation if he were to have an extended absence.

  • Frankie Montas Takes First Loss Of 2024 Tuesday

    Headshot for Frankie Montas

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas fell to 2-1 in Tuesday's 9-5 loss to the Brewers. Montas pitched five innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts. It was the first lackluster outing of the season for the 31-year-old, who has looked great overall with a 2.16 ERA, 13 strikeouts, and four walks in 16 2/3 IP. He will get a great chance to rebound in his next projected start at the White Sox.

  • Offseason In Review: Cincinnati Reds

    Headshot for Andrew Abbott

The Reds almost made the playoffs last year as they promoted several exciting prospects and seemed to firmly end their rebuilding period. They added to that foundation this offseason by spreading money around to several free agents. • Frankie Montas Named Opening Day Starter

    Headshot for Frankie Montas

Manager David Bell announced on Sunday that Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Frankie Montas will be the team's Opening Day starter. This is a bit of a surprise with young 2017 first-round draft pick Hunter Greene in the mix, but Greene hasn't made a statement this spring that he's ready to be the guy, continuing to walk too many batters (seven walks in three spring starts). Montas' numbers aren't exactly dazzling this spring either, but he's shown to be a leader and mentor for the young staff, and now he's been awarded with the honor of starting on Opening Day. The 30-year-old missed basically all of last season, but in 2022 the righty posted a 4.05 ERA, 3.77 SIERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a K-BB% of 16.3%. While he may be the Reds' "ace" right now, for typical 12-team roto leagues he's not a draftable asset at this point, ranked 391 overall at RotoBaller.
