  • Cubs To Select Garrett Cooper

    Headshot for Garrett Cooper

First baseman Garrett Cooper has made the Opening Day roster with the Cubs, reports Craig Mish of SportsGrid (X link). He’s not on the 40-man roster, so Chicago will need to select his contract in the next few days. Cooper somewhat surprisingly settled for a minor league deal after camp had begun. He was among 31…

  • Garrett Cooper Signs With Cubs

    Headshot for Michael Busch

Free-agent first baseman Garrett Cooper signed a minor-league deal with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday that includes a non-roster invite to major-league spring training, according to a source. Cooper will compete for playing time at first base this spring alongside newcomer Michael Busch and Matt Mervis. The 33-year-old veteran was an All-Star in 2022 with the Miami Marlins, and he hit .251/.304/.419 with a career-high 17 home runs, 18 doubles, a triple, 61 RBI and 42 runs scored in 123 games with the Marlins and San Diego Padres last season. At best, Cooper will probably be on the short side of a platoon at the cold corner in Chicago against left-handed pitching. In his seven seasons in the big leagues, he has never reached the 20-homer mark and has just one stolen base in 481 career games.

    Headshot for Cody Bellinger

In recent days, MLBTR has taken a position-by-position look at the remaining free agent class (catchers, shortstops, center fielders). We’ll turn now to first base. There’s some overlap at the very top of the market. Cody Bellinger: Bellinger is more of a center fielder, but he logged over 400 innings at first base for the…

The Brewers are known to be looking for additions at first base, with general manager Matt Arnold having admitted last month that both infield corners could use some work, listing a reunion with Carlos Santana as one move they have interest in.
