  • Jacob deGrom Plays Catch Friday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side) played catch on the field Friday. deGrom was placed on the 10-day injured list with tightness in his right side on Tuesday, though he has been able to throw, which seems to indicate that it will be a short stint on the sidelines, a sentiment the Mets have echoed. Still, there's no official date for his return- and there likely won't be until he participates in a bullpen session or a simulated game. deGrom's return would be excellent news for fantasy managers, as he has pitched to a 0.68 ERA and 1.03 FIP with a 65:7 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 40 innings pitched this year.

  • Jacob deGrom Plays Catch

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side) resumed playing catch on Tuesday and plans to evaluate his mechanics after landing on the 10-day injured list due to tightness in his right side. The two-time National League Cy Young winner hopes his stay on the injured list is short. The 32-year-old's MRI exam showed no structural damage after he was removed from his latest start early on Sunday. When healthy, deGrom has been one of the best pitchers in baseball, going 3-2 with a major league-best 0.68 ERA with 65 strikeouts in 40 innings. He said that the tightness limited his ability to fix his mechanics on the fly in his last start. deGrom will throw daily until he's ready for a bullpen session, but the team is unsure if he'll return when he's eligible on May 20. The Mets are off the next two Thursdays, so they may proceed with a four-man rotation with deGrom out.

  • Jacob deGrom Officially Placed On 10-Day Injured List

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side) was officially placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to May 10, with right side tightness on Tuesday. As previously reported, deGrom's MRI exam was clean after he was forced to leave his start early on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with tightness in his right side. Despite the clean MRI, he is being placed on the 10-day IL as the Mets are, rightfully, being cautious with their ace. deGrom was pitching on Sunday for the first time since skipping a start due to discomfort in his right lat, and manager Luis Rojas said deGrom's new discomfort was in a different area than the prior issue. It remains possible that deGrom could miss just one start and return for the May 21-23 series against the Miami Marlins. Overall in 2021, deGrom is 3-2 with a dominant 0.68 ERA, a 0.60 WHIP, and 65 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched over six starts.

  • Jacob deGrom Heading To Injured List

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom's (side) MRI exam was clean after he was forced to leave his start early on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks with tightness in his right side, but he will be placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday. The Mets ace was removed as a precaution on Sunday after throwing two warmup pitches before the sixth inning. He was pitching for the first time since skipping a start due to discomfort in his right lat, and manager Luis Rojas said deGrom's discomfort is "different" that what he was experiencing earlier in the week. The new soreness is now "more in the lower back area." It's possible the Cy Young winner could miss just one start and return for the May 21-23 series against the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old allowed one run with three walks and six strikeouts in five innings on Sunday before being removed. It's another setback, but fantasy managers should take solace in the fact that the Mets are being extremely cautious right now. deGrom is 3-2 with a Major League-leading 0.68 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 40 innings over his six starts in 2021.

  • Jacob deGrom Prognosis Looks Positive

The initial prognosis for New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side), who exited his start on Sunday with tightness in his right side, looks good according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network. After an MRI, the Mets are reportedly optimistic that a stay on the injured list for deGrom will not be necessary, Although deGrom may miss his next start (or his next start may be pushed back), this is obviously good news for fantasy managers, the Mets, and Mets fans.

  • Jacob deGrom Exits Start Sunday With Right Side Tightness

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side) exited his start on Sunday with tightness in his right side, according to Justin Toscano of NorthJersey.com. This is an ominous sign for deGrom, who was scratched from his scheduled start earlier in the week due to tightness in his right side that was later diagnosed as inflammation in his right lat. deGrom had started off the game with four perfect innings of work, but then allowed a run on three walks and one hit in the fifth inning. He threw a couple of warm-up pitches prior to the start of the sixth inning before calling for a trainer, and he then exited the game without pitching in the frame. Given the fact deGrom is unquestionably the ace of the Mets rotation, it's not hard to see a scenario where he lands on the injured list for some time to fully heal this injury. Managers should begin preparing for the possibility of deGrom being out for a while.

  • Jacob deGrom Ready To Start Sunday's Game

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) will be ready to pitch in his scheduled start on Sunday, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. deGrom was scratched from his start on Monday with right lat inflammation, but the team felt that he would be ready to pitch again over the weekend. General manager Zack Scott said that deGrom, "is ready to roll for tomorrow," during a Zoom call on Saturday afternoon. Managers can breathe a sigh of relief now, and start looking forward to deGrom's matchup against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

  • Jacob deGrom Feels Good After Bullpen Session

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) remains on track to start on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks after he felt "really good" following a bullpen session on Friday, according to manager Luis Rojas. deGrom was scratched from Monday's start with right lat inflammation. While the Mets haven't officially committed to him for Sunday, it's looking like he will make the start. It's pretty wild how good the 32-year-old right-hander has been so far in 2021, posting a 0.57 WHIP with 59 strikeouts and just four walks in 35 innings over five starts. deGrom hasn't allowed more than one earned run in any start this year and hasn't pitched fewer than six innings. He's a must-start if he returns to the mound against Arizona.

  • Jacob deGrom To Throw Bullpen Friday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) played catch up to 90 feet on Thursday and will attempt to throw a bullpen session on Friday. He remains lined up to return to the starting rotation on Sunday against the Arizona Diamondbacks after missing just one start with right lat soreness. David Peterson will start in the series opener on Friday, with Joey Lucchesi likely to pitch the bulk innings on Saturday. deGrom continues to be the best pitcher in baseball, sporting a ridiculous 0.51 ERA and 0.57 WHIP through 35 innings over five starts this year. He has struck out 59 batters while issuing just four walks and is a set-and-forget starting pitcher each time he toes the rubber.

  • Jacob deGrom Expected To Throw On Thursday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) is expected to play catch on Thursday in St. Louis and will get checked out by team doctors. If he has no setbacks, he will remain on track to start on Sunday against Arizona. deGrom has been nothing short of dominant so far in 2021. He has posted a 0.51 ERA, a 0.571 WHIP, and a 48 percent strikeout rate in 35 innings of work. If he can avoid a trip to the injured list, assuming all goes well on Thursday, fantasy managers should be ready to fire him up for his start on Sunday.

May 6 · RotoBaller Mets Jacob deGrom
  • Jacob deGrom Could Make Next Start On Sunday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) could be ready to make his next start on Sunday, according to MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. deGrom was scratched from his start on Tuesday due to inflammation in his right lat, but it sounds like he could begin playing catch by Thursday if he is cleared by doctors. He has been dominating opposing batters this season, posting a 0.51 ERA, 0.571 WHIP and a 48 percent strikeout rate in 35 innings of work. It looks like deGrom will be able to avoid a stint on the injured list, but managers should closely monitor updates on his condition over the next few days.

  • Jacob deGrom Has Inflammation In Right Lat

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (lat) has been diagnosed with inflammation in his right lat, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. deGrom was scratched from his start Tuesday night with soreness in his side, and he underwent an MRI to receive the diagnosis. For now, there is no word of the possibility of a stint on the injured list, but he will refrain from throwing for the next few days. Managers should monitor updates on deGrom closely, but for now it appears this may not be a lengthy absence for him.

  • Jacob deGrom Scratched From Start Tuesday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom (side) has been scratched from his start on Tuesday night due to tightness in his right side, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Mets will send Miguel Castro to the mound to make the start in his place against the Cardinals. There's no word yet as to whether deGrom will only miss one start or if he will be out for a while. Managers should adjust their lineups accordingly.

  • Jacob deGrom Has Start Pushed Back To Tuesday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom will have his scheduled start pushed back a day from Monday to Tuesday, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The move will just be to give deGrom an extra day of rest, as DiComo reports the team will likely have a bullpen game on Monday. He adds that Joey Lucchesi would be eligible to return from the injured list then, and could potentially be an option the Mets use for Monday's game against St. Louis. Bottom line for deGrom though is everything appears to be fine and he'll be ready to play on Tuesday.

  • Jacob deGrom Takes Another Hard Luck Loss

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom continued his dominance by going six innings, allowing just one earned run and striking out nine in the Mets' 1-0 loss to Boston on Wednesday. Unfortunately, as has been the case all too frequently, deGrom had nothing to show for it in the win column and took the loss, as the Mets' offense continued to struggle. Almost implausibly, deGrom's record fell to 2-2 on the season, despite an ERA of 0.51, a WHIP of 0.57, and a K:BB of 59:4 in 35 innings pitched. deGrom has now allowed just two earned runs so far in 2021, and the Mets have lost both games. Despite the putrid Mets' offense, deGrom remains a must-start in all fantasy formats. He is scheduled to next face the Cardinals on the road on Tuesday when, hopefully, the Mets can muster up more than two hits to support the best pitcher in baseball.

  • Jacob deGrom Already Breaking MLB Records In 2021

With his two-hit, 15 strikeout, complete-game shutout on Friday against the Nationals, New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom set an impressive MLB record. He became the first pitcher in MLB history to record 50 strikeouts over the first four appearances in a season. The record had previously been held and shared by Nolan Ryan (1978) and, recently, Shane Bieber (2021) with 48. In addition, deGrom became the third pitcher in MLB history to ever strike out 14 batters in three consecutive starts. He has also become the first Mets pitcher in franchise history to have at least 12 strikeouts in three consecutive games. deGrom is currently pitching on another level, even by his standards. His starts have become must-watch events for a franchise that hasn't seen anything like this since Doc Gooden in his Cy Young award season of 1985. deGrom, obviously, remains a must-start in all fantasy formats. It will be exciting to see where the 2021 season takes deGrom in terms of strikeout totals and elite ratios in the context of MLB history.

  • Jacob deGrom Strikes Out 15 In Complete Game Shutout

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom continued his dominance on Friday night, striking out 15 in a 6-0 complete game shutout over the Nationals. deGrom allowed just two hits in the win, as he has now allowed just four runs one earned on 13 hits and three walks over 29 innings, while leading the majors with 50 strikeouts. There really isn't much else to say other than deGrom is dominating the league right now, and there is no possible circumstance in any format where you shouldn't be starting him every time out.

  • Jacob deGrom To Start Saturday At Colorado

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom will start the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, following the postponement of Friday's game due to weather concerns. deGrom was originally scheduled to pitch on Thursday at home against the Philadelphia Phillies, but that game was also postponed due to inclement weather. deGrom will now be pitching on Saturday on a full week of rest. In his last start, deGrom went eight innings against the Marlins on Saturday, striking out 14 and allowing only one run on five hits. In his first 14 innings pitched in 2021, deGrom has posted a 0.64 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP to go with a 21:2 K:BB. deGrom remains a matchup-proof fantasy ace and should remain active in all formats when he's starting.

In his last outing, deGrom went eight innings against the Marlins on Saturday striking out 14 and allowing only one run on five hits. In his first 14 innings pitched in 2021, deGrom has posted a ridiculous 0.64 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP to go with a 21:2 K:BB. deGrom remains a matchup-proof fantasy ace and should remain active in all formats, despite the fact that his next start is in the thin air of Colorado.

  • Jacob deGrom Takes Hard Luck Loss Saturday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom went eight impressive innings against the Marlins on Saturday striking out 14 and allowing only one run on five hits. Despite the spectacular performance, the Mets' offense let deGrom down again. The Mets fell 3-0 to Miami and deGrom picked up the loss as his 2021 record fell to 0-1. In his first 14 innings pitched in 2021, deGrom has posted a ridiculous 0.64 ERA and a 0.71 WHIP to go with a 21:2 K:BB. As has been the case over the past three seasons, deGrom has nothing to show for his incredible start to the season in the win column. With the additions of Francisco Lindor and James McCann to the Mets' lineup in 2021, it was expected that deGrom would finally start accumulating win totals that correlated to his pitching dominance. So far in 2021, that hasn't been the case. As the best pitcher in MLB, deGrom remains a must-start in all fantasy formats. He will next face the Phillies on Thursday when, hopefully, the Mets' bats will finally wake up and give him some run support.

  • Jacob deGrom Solid In No Decision On Monday

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom pitched six effective innings on Monday against the Phillies, allowing no runs, three hits, and two walks, while striking out seven in the Mets' 5-3 loss. Despite the quality start in which he routinely hit 99-100 mph on his fastball, deGrom was once again victimized by an ineffective Mets' bullpen. Although deGrom left the game with a 2-0 lead, an eighth-inning Mets' bullpen meltdown left the ace with a no-decision. deGrom, almost inexplicably, now has 13 career no-decisions where he has gone at least six innings and given up no earned runs. Hopefully, the bullpen's performance on Monday is not a sign of things to come for the Mets in 2021. deGrom will aim to get into the win column on Saturday when he next faces the Marlins at home. deGrom, naturally, remains a must-start in all formats, though his win totals may again be suppressed if the Mets' bullpen struggles continue.

  • Mets Had Extension Talks With Jacob deGrom This Spring

The New York Mets reportedly engaged in preliminary discussions on a contract extension with starting pitcher Jacob deGrom earlier this spring. deGrom has an opt-out in his current contract after the 2022 season. The Mets are attempting to lock up deGrom for multiple years in an effort to avoid his exercising such opt-out rights after the 2022 season. Notably, however, it was also reported that extension talks did not progress and are not expected to resume this season. Despite lack of progress on this front, it does reveal that the Mets want to keep their star ace (and future Hall of Famer) in blue and orange for the remainder of his career. The two-time Cy Young winner is showing no decline in his game and is a matchup-proof ace who should be active on all fantasy rosters once the Mets' season finally gets underway.

With the New York Mets' weekend series against Washington cancelled due to positive COVID-19 cases on the Nationals' roster, the Mets' first game of the 2021 campaign will be on Monday, April 5 at Philadelphia. Jacob deGrom will get the start against the Phillies for the Mets' "new" Opening Day. deGrom's second start of the season will likely be at home on Saturday, April 10 against the Marlins, giving him two starts in the first full week of the 2021 MLB season. The two-time Cy Young winner had a 2.38 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 68 innings in the shortened 2020 season. deGrom is showing no decline in his game and is a matchup-proof ace who should be active on all rosters once the Mets' season finally gets underway.

  • Jacob deGrom Opening Day Start Postponed

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom has had his first start of 2021 pushed back, as the Mets-Nationals Opening Day game has been postponed due to COVID-19 protocols within the Nationals organization, according to The Athletic's Jayson Stark. The Nationals had made several moves on Wednesday due to a positive COVID-19 test and players entering quarantine due to contact tracing, but it appears like the issue has grown enough to warrant the postponement. A statement from MLB said that the game will not be made up on Friday, and they will continue to monitor the situation. deGrom and all other Mets should be taken out of daily lineups for Thursday, and managers should continue to check for updates as this could potentially affect the other games in the series this weekend.

In nine innings of work this spring, deGrom has now stuck out a ridiculous 16 and allowed only three hits, one run, and one walk while routinely hitting triple digits on the radar gun. The two-time Cy Young winner had a 2.38 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 68 innings in the shortened 2020 season. deGrom is showing no decline in his game and is the consensus top pitcher off the board in all fantasy formats who will provide managers with elite strikeouts and ratios in 2021.

  • Jacob deGrom Dominates In Thursday's Outing

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom routinely hit triple digits on the radar gun and struck out seven of the nine Astros hitters that he faced on Thursday in spring training. One scout clocked the right-hander as high as 102 mph. "Totally dominated," the scout wrote. In context, deGrom faced an Astros lineup that mostly consisted of bench players and minor-leaguers in three perfect innings of work. The Mets Opening Day starter has become one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in baseball and is a bona fide ace. Already a two-time Cy Young winner, deGrom had a 2.38 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 68 innings in the shortened 2020 season. The 32-year-old is showing no decline in his game and is the consensus top pitcher off the board in fantasy drafts.

New York Mets right-handed pitcher Jacob deGrom has been officially tabbed as the team's starting pitcher for April 1 vs. the Nationals, per manager Luis Rojas. The move comes as no surprise as deGrom has established himself among the game's elite, having led the National League in strikeouts each of the past two years. The list of accolades with deGrom is plentiful, as his 38.8 K% and 2.70 xERA from last season help to propel him toward the first round in nearly all season-long fantasy drafts. Over the past three years, deGrom has combined for a 2.10 ERA, 188 ERA+ and 2.31 FIP, averaging 11.6 K/9 IP. Barring an injury, Washington is likely to counter with Max Scherzer for the April 1 contest, giving fans a tremendous pitching showdown right out of the gates.

New York Mets starting pitcher Jacob deGrom will make his 2021 Grapefruit League debut Saturday when he faces the Houston Astros. deGrom already appears to be in midseason form during these early days of spring training, having hit 99mph with his fastball last Tuesday. deGrom finished 2020 with a 4-2 record, a 2.38 ERA, a 0.956 WHIP, and a 104:18 K:BB in 68 innings pitched. Heading into 2021, deGrom remains a bona fide fantasy ace who will be a safe bet for elite strikeout totals, league-leading ratios, and wins with a bolstered lineup behind him. deGrom should be one of the first two pitchers taken off of draft boards in all fantasy formats.

  • Matthew Allan Working With Jacob deGrom

New York Mets right-handed pitching prospect Matthew Allan has been working with Jacob deGrom during the early part of spring training. The Mets have paired Allan with deGrom in nearly all of their drills. They are hoping the 19-year old prospect, who is currently the Mets' fourth-ranked MLB Pipeline prospect, can learn a bit of what has made deGrom so successful. The 2019 draft pick has impressed team officials so far in his first big-league spring camp. That said, he will not break camp with the Mets or see major league action in 2021. He projects as a future SP2 who should reach the majors sometime in 2023. If he can develop under the tutelage of deGrom, his ceiling could even be higher. Though not a redraft target for 2021, Allan should be rostered in all dynasty formats.

He finished 2020 with a 4-2 record, a 2.38 ERA, a 0.956 WHIP, and a 104:18 K:BB in 68 innings pitched. Heading into 2021, deGrom remains a matchup-proof fantasy ace. deGrom will again be a safe bet for elite strikeout totals and league-leading ratios.
