Rangers Notes: Dunning, Ragans, Smith, Foscue
The Rangers could carry righty Dane Dunning and left-hander Cole Ragans in the big league bullpen to open the season, writes Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. Both pitchers were squeezed out of the initial rotation mix by Texas’ busy offseason. Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney and Nathan Eovaldi were all brought in to join Martín Pérez and Jon Gray in the…

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (back) said on Saturday that he expected to throw on the side on Sunday, and he could try to pitch in a Cactus League game as early as Wednesday. The 31-year-old right-hander was scratched from his spring start on Friday due to back tightness, but it was a cautionary measure and Gray doesn't appear to be dealing with a very serious injury. He made only 24 starts (127 1/3 innings) in his first year in Texas in 2022 due to multiple injuries, but he should be healthy for Opening Day, barring another setback with his back. When he was healthy last year, he was pretty effective, and Gray could be a real nice value pick for fantasy managers in 2023.

Jon Gray Scratched With Back Tightness
Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jon Gray (back) was scratched from his Cactus League start on Friday against the San Francisco Giants with back tightness. The Rangers starter for Friday's spring game is now left-hander Taylor Hearn. We're still early enough in spring training that Gray may not be in danger of missing Opening Day, but it will also depend on how long it will be before he can make his second Cactus League start. Despite dealing with a handful of injuries in his first year in Texas in 2022, he produced a decent 3.96 ERA (3.80 FIP), 1.13 WHIP and 25.7 percent strikeout rate in 127 innings over 24 starts. Gray's back injury is a bit worrisome, but if he can stay healthier than he was last year, there could be some nice value attached to him in 2023.

Rangers GM Chris Young Discusses Closer Options
The Rangers were active this offseason in overhauling their rotation for 2023. Martín Pérez was set to hit free agency but was given a $19.65MM qualifying offer that he accepted to return. The club also signed free agents Jacob deGrom, Andrew Heaney and Nathan Eovaldi, in addition to acquiring Jake Odorizzi from Atlanta. Those five…
