  • C.J. Cron Back From The Injured List Saturday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

The Los Angeles Angels activated first baseman C.J. Cron from the injured list on Saturday after missing about a month with a back ailment. The veteran 33-year-old has split time between the Angels and the Colorado Rockies this season, slashing .252/.299/.441 with 12 bombs, 38 runs, and 37 RBI across 70 contests. Cron isn't starting on Saturday against the Tigers, but fantasy managers should expect him in the lineup at first base or designated hitter most days for the rest of the year while providing power and RBI.

  • Previewing The 2023-24 Free Agent Class: First Base

    Headshot for Jesus Aguilar

With the regular season winding down, a number of teams (and their fanbases) are already starting to turn their attention towards the offseason. Identifying free agent targets is a big part of that prep work, so it's worth taking an early look at the players who'll be available on the open market. Over the coming…

  • C.J. Cron Hopes To Play Again This Year

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin said "it will be a little bit of time" before first baseman C.J. Cron (back) can return to the team. Cron said on Monday that he has yet to start swinging a bat, but he's hoping that he can still return before the end of the season. He also dealt with back issues earlier this year before being acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies at the deadline in early August. The 33-year-old tried to play through lower-back inflammation before he was put on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 18 (retroactive to Aug. 16). With very little time left this year, fantasy managers shouldn't expect Cron to make it back. The Angels called up rookie Nolan Schanuel, a first-round pick this year, to help fill in at first base with Cron sidelined.

  • C.J. Cron Hasn't Resumed Baseball Activities

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron (back) remains sore and has not resumed baseball activities. Fantasy managers should not expect Cron to come off the 10-day injured when he's eligible after landing on the IL on Aug. 18 due to lower-back inflammation. The Angels called up this year's first-rounder, Nolan Schanuel, to help replace Cron, but he's missed the last two games with food poisoning. Even when Cron is able to return, he'll likely be a part-time player for the Angels as long as Schanuel continues to play well. The 33-year-old veteran slugger has also gone just 10-for-46 (.217) with a homer, five RBI, 14 strikeouts and seven runs scored in 14 games (12 starts) since being acquired in a trade from the Colorado Rockies just before the deadline.

  • C.J. Cron Placed On 10-Day Injured List

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron (back) has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 16. This news shouldn't come as much of a surprise to fantasy managers. Cron has been dealing with lingering back discomfort for about a week. He'll get a chance to rest before possibly returning next weekend. Cron has struggled at the plate since being traded from the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline. Hopefully, his bat will pick it up once he's back to full speed, but rookie first base prospect Nolan Schanuel is already in the big leagues and is expected to take valuable playing time from Cron down the stretch.

  • C.J. Cron's Back Still Bothering Him

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron's injured back was enough of an issue that he was not available at all on Wednesday, and the team was planning to have him re-evaluated at home on Thursday. The Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher suggests that Cron's injury is likely related to the call-up of Nolan Schanuel, who was just taken 11th overall in this year's MLB draft. Cron's injury dates back to earlier this year when he was playing with the Colorado Rockies, and he's started just one of the last four games. Even if Cron doesn't go on the injured list, he's likely going to lose playing time to the rookie at first base moving forward. The 33-year-old right-handed slugger has disappointed after making his first All-Star team in 2022, hitting .252 (64-for-254) with 12 home runs and 37 RBI in 70 total games.

  • C.J. Cron To Play On Tuesday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron (back) is returning to the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Texas Rangers. The 33-year-old makes his return to the lineup after missing each of the last two games due to back tightness. Luckily, it appears to be a minor issue that won't require a trip to the injured list. Cron is 8-for-42 since being acquired from the Colorado Rockies at the trade deadline. The right-handed slugger has certainly lost some luster, but still remains a decent power threat at the plate. He'll bat cleanup and play first base versus left-hander Jordan Montgomery on Tuesday.

  • C.J. Cron Still Absent On Monday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron (back) remains out of action on Monday with the team taking on the division-rival Texas Rangers. Mike Moustakas will get the start at first base and will hit cleanup for the Halos against Rangers right-hander Max Scherzer. Monday will be the second straight game that Cron will start on the bench while dealing with a sore back. The 33-year-old right-handed slugger should be considered day-to-day to start the week. He was able to pinch hit on Sunday, so he could be back in the starting lineup as early as Tuesday. Cron lost a little fantasy luster with the move from Coors Field to Angel Stadium, but he can still provide some modest pop (12 home runs) in fantasy leagues. In his first 13 contests back with the Angels, he's gone 8-for-42 (.190) with a homer and five RBI.

  • C.J. Cron Forced From Saturday's Game

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman C.J. Cron (back) left Saturday's game against the Houston Astros early due to lower-back tightness. After popping out to end the sixth inning, the 33-year-old was removed for Eduardo Escobar. Cron went 0-for-3 before departing. Angels skipper Phil Nevin revealed that Cron has been nursing the issue lately, and his exit was precautionary. Cron will be reevaluated ahead of Sunday's action, leaving his status for the series finale up in the air. Since rejoining the team that drafted him, the veteran slugger is hitting an underwhelming .190 (8-for-42) with a .523 OPS, one home run, and five RBI in 12 games.

  • C.J. Cron Getting The Day Off On Sunday Against Seattle

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Los Angeles Angels first baseman/designated hitter C.J. Cron is getting the day off for Sunday's series finale against the Seattle Mariners. Cron hasn't received a day off as a member of the Angels since coming over at the trade deadline so this is a needed day of rest. The veteran slugger is slashing just .222/.333/.222 over his first five games with the Angels this season and is still looking for his first home run with the team. Mike Moustakas is filling in at first base and batting fourth against Seattle starter Bryce Miller as the Halos look to avoid the sweep.

  • C.J. Cron And Randal Grichuk Traded To Angels

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

The Los Angeles Angels acquired outfielder Randal Grichuk and first baseman C.J. Cron from the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Heading back to the Rockies are Angels prospect pitchers Jake Madden and Mason Albright. Madden is the No. 8 prospect in the Angels system according to MLB Pipeline, and Albright is No. 28. Both Grichuk and Cron will help an Angels lineup that could use more depth, but their fantasy values will take a big hit as a result of moving out of Coors Field. Grichuk was an already fringy outfielder, although he was having a solid season, slashing .308/.365/.496 in 240 at-bats. He will likely only be useful in deep leagues now. Cron has been a more reliable bat for fantasy purposes, but he will probably be pushed to a borderline starting bat with power upside instead of a must-start first baseman. Although most fantasy managers will know the downside of leaving Coors, it's worth a shot to try and sell high on these two.

  • C.J. Cron Returns For Rockies

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron (back) is returning to the starting lineup on Friday against the visiting Oakland Athletics. Cron is serving as the designated hitter and is batting fifth in the lineup against A's left-hander JP Sears. The 33-year-old right-handed power hitter is back in action for the first time in a week after needing to rest due to lower-back tightness. Cron really hasn't produced all that much power for fantasy managers in 2023, as he's only hit 11 round-trippers while slashing .255/.299/.480 with an additional 11 doubles, 31 RBI and 31 runs scored in 211 trips to the plate over 53 games. He's returning to a nice matchup, though, and he went deep in four of his last five games before his back injury.

  • C.J. Cron Hopes To Play By Friday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron (back) said that he won't be in the starting lineup on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals and probably won't be in there on Wednesday, either. He plans to take batting practice on Tuesday. Swinging doesn't bother Cron, but running and stopping are issues. He's hoping to play after a day off on Thursday in the series opener on Friday against the Oakland Athletics. Michael Toglia is getting another start at the cold corner on Tuesday and is hitting seventh against Nationals right-hander Trevor Williams. Cron is missing his fourth straight game on Tuesday due to lower-back tightness, and he remains day-to-day. The 33-year-old has provided modest power to fantasy managers in 2023 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 53 games.

  • C.J. Cron To Sit Out On Monday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Washington Nationals. This marks the third game in a row that Cron has missed due to back tightness. The assumption is that the 33-year-old is going to be moved at the upcoming trade deadline. That being said, the Rockies aren't going to push him and give Cron as much time off as he needs. Michael Toglia will cover first base and bat sixth versus left-hander Patrick Corbin for Monday's game.

  • Kris Bryant, C.J. Cron Absent From Lineup

    Headshot for Kris Bryant

Colorado Rockies outfielder Kris Bryant (finger) and C.J. Cron (back) are both out of the starting lineup on Sunday against the Miami Marlins. Bryant will sit out after leaving Saturday's contest early after being hit by a pitch on his finger, although X-rays came back negative. Cron will miss his second straight game due to back stiffness. Fantasy managers should consider both players day-to-day for now. With both Bryant and Cron sidelined, Nolan Jones will start in right field and bat sixth, while Michael Toglia will get the start at first base and hit seventh against Marlins left-hander Jesus Luzardo. Fantasy managers will want to check back on Monday to see if either Bryant or Cron will be available for the start of a series against the Washington Nationals.

  • C.J. Cron Remains Out Of Sunday's Lineup

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron (back) is absent from Sunday's lineup against the Miami Marlins. The 33-year-old was scratched late from Saturday's lineup card with back stiffness, so Cron gets another day of respite in this one. The slugger missed over a month of action with back spasms before finally returning on June 27, so Colorado might want to play things cautiously here. Cron, holder of an expiring contract, was boosting his potential trade value while batting .333 with a .998 OPS, five home runs, and 11 RBI in 57 at-bats over his previous 16 games. The switch-hitting Michael Toglia mans first base and hits seventh for Sunday's series finale.

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Updating a previous report, Colorado Rockies first baseman/designated hitter C.J. Cron (back) was scratched from the lineup for Saturday's game against the Miami Marlins with back stiffness. Cron was on the original lineup card, but his back appears to have stiffened up on him, so the Rockies are playing it safe and sitting him. Michael Toglia got the start at first in Cron's place and is hitting seventh in the batting order against Marlins right-hander Johnny Cueto.

  • C.J. Cron Scratched From The Lineup On Saturday

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies designated hitter/first baseman C.J. Cron is not in the lineup for Saturday's contest against the Miami Marlins. Cron was a late scratch for this one but no reason has been given as to why he was removed from the lineup. He's been on a tear since his activation from the injured list as well. The team should provide an update on his status following Saturday's game. Michael Toglia is starting at first and batting seventh against Johnny Cueto in Cron's place.

  • C.J. Cron Crosses The Plate Twice In Win

    Headshot for C.J. Cron

Colorado Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron ended 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored in Friday's 8-5 victory versus the Detroit Tigers. Thus far, the 33-year-old is logging a career-low .700 OPS over 149 at-bats in 2023. It's a bit concerning considering Cron's 2022 All-Star first half was followed up by a dreadful second-half swoon, hitting a mere .196 with a .593 OPS across his final 220 ABs of last season. In any event, the slugger is a modest 4-for-13 since recently coming off the injured list after a month-long bout with back spasms.
