  • Diamondbacks Closing Situation Will Be Fluid This Year

Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said the team's closing situation this year will be "fluid in that area." "What I've done for the past six years is, I've always had a closer. That's just how my mind works. But I've got to evolve a little bit in that area. So if I feel the need to I will [name a closer], if somebody emerges I might, but for right now it's very fluid. I haven't yet made up my mind about naming somebody as our ninth-inning guy," Lovullo said. The names in the mix to be Arizona's closer in 2023 include recently signed Andrew Chafin, Kevin Ginkel, Joe Mantiply, Mark Melancon and Miguel Castro. Melancon has the most experience of the group with over 200 career saves, but Lovullo also has some experience relying heavily on Chafin as a reliever in the past. Melancon began last year as the team's closer and finished with 18 saves, but he also struggled with an ERA close to 5.00.

  • Andrew Chafin Signs With Diamondbacks

Free-agent relief pitcher Andrew Chafin has agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 32-year-old signs a one-year contract worth $6.5 million for the 2023 season. It's odd that the lefty reliever lasted in free agency for this long. He has posted some consistent seasons in the past. Last season, Chafin finished with a 2.83 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 67/19 K/BB ratio across 57 1/3 innings with the Detroit Tigers. The expectation is that he'll compete for the closing role with the Diamondbacks. That being said, he could have fantasy value if he does secure the ninth-inning role.

  • Players That Could Move To The 60-Day IL Once Spring Training Begins

Just about every baseball team has a full 40-man roster now, with the Astros the only team with an open spot at the moment. That means that just about every transaction, be it a free agent signing or a waiver claim, requires a corresponding move. However, that could soon change as the injured list is…

  • Market Heating Up Now For Andrew Chafin

Per a tweet from the New York Post's Jon Heyman on Wednesday, the market for free agent reliever Andrew Chafin is reportedly "heating up now." Heyman tweeted the following: "Andrew Chafin market heating up now. Mets are among teams in on one of the top lefty relievers. They've also talked to Zack Britton (Buck O's connection)." Chafin enjoyed a strong season out of the bullpen for the Detroit Tigers in 2022, pitching to a 2.83 ERA and a 3.06 FIP in 57.1 innings of work. He added 67 strikeouts compared to just 19 walks allowed while finishing with 19 holds, three saves and a pair of pitcher wins.

  • Mets Among Teams Interested In Andrew Chafin

The market for lefty reliever Andrew Chafin is “heating up,” per Jon Heyman of the New York Post (Twitter link), and the Mets are among the teams with interest. SNY’s Andy Martino tweets that as many as seven other clubs have been talking with Chafin, however. Mets GM Billy Eppler said yesterday that he still…

  • Cubs Interested In Andrew Chafin, Matt Moore

The Cubs continue to look for relief help, and The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma reports that left-handers Andrew Chafin and Matt Moore are both on the team’s radar.  It isn’t clear whether the Cubs are necessarily willing to meet either pitcher’s asking price, as president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer had previously indicated that his team…
