  • Rockies Don't Have The Budget To Extend Trevor Story

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story, who can become a free agent after the 2021 season, is unlikely to re-re-sign with the team, per Jon Heyman of MLB Network. Heyman stated earlier that the Rockies are "said not to have the budget for any big signing at the moment, so barring some big change there won't be an extension coming anytime soon for superstar SS Trevor Story." The writing has been on the wall for some time, as the Rockies haven't even opened discussions about an extension with the All-Star shortstop. Colorado already traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals during the offseason and look to be heading into full-on rebuild mode. This recent bit of news increases the probability of a midseason trade, which could hamper Story's fantasy value. He should still play the first half of the year at Coors Field, though, so this recent bit of news shouldn't prevent you from taking him at his second-round ADP.

  • Trevor Story Hasn't Discussed Contract Extension

Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story has yet to discuss a contract extension with the team as he enters the final year of his deal. "Yeah, it's a contract year, but to me, every year is pretty much that way," Story told reporters on Tuesday. A midseason trade to a contender is a possibility with the two-time All-Star set to become a free agent at the end of the season. The front office claims the team is not rebuilding, but they already traded third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals earlier this offseason and are projected to finish dead last in the National League West by PECOTA. The team will likely see how the season starts out before fielding any serious offers, but this is a situation to keep an eye on. Story should still be locked in as a first-round pick in fantasy drafts with his combination of power and speed.

  • Rockies Not Willing To Discuss Trades For Trevor Story

The Colorado Rockies haven't given any indication that they are willing to discuss shortstop Trevor Story in any trade proposals. This comes after they officially traded star third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals earlier this week. Story, who was ranked as MLB.com's top shortstop entering the 2021 season, is eligible to become a free agent after this year. It's likely that the Rockies will first attempt to sign the 28-year-old to a long-term extension, but it remains to be seen if Story will be open to that after just watching Arenado depart despite signing a long-term extension before the 2019 season. Staying in Colorado at hitter-friendly Coors Field would be best for Story's fantasy outlook, but his elite power/speed skills make him a late first-round selection in fantasy drafts regardless.

  • Trevor Story Expected To Begin Season With Rockies

Colorado Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich said that he expects shortstop Trevor Story to be with the club for the start of the 2021 season. Many expect the Rockies to consider trading Story after they just sent All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado to the Cardinals. The 28-year-old will be eligible to become a free agent after the 2021 season, and the Rockies have not approached him about a long-term contract extension. Trade rumors aside, Story hit .289/.355/.519 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 235 at-bats in the shortened 2020 season and has an elite power/speed combination at a premier position. A trade away from hitter-friendly Coors Field would slightly diminish his value, but Story remains a late first-round option for fantasy managers with him still in a Rockies uniform.

  • Rockies Likely To Consider Extension For Trevor Story

With the Colorado Rockies agreeing to a blockbuster deal to send third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals, the team will now likely try to lock shortstop Trevor Story up on a long-term contract extension. But it remains to be seen if Story would be interested in an extension, as he could be turned off by the Arenado saga with Colorado after the All-Star signed an extension before the 2019 season. But there will also be a ton of competition in a loaded free-agent shortstop class after the 2021 season, when Story is slated to become a free agent. With the Rockies unlikely to contend with Arenado gone, the Rockies best chance to acquire young, controllable talent would be to trade Story. The 28-year-old is one of the best all-around shortstops in the game with plenty of power and speed, and his fantasy profile will be the strongest if he remains at hitter-friendly Coors Field. There are fewer safe selections than Story at the end of the first round in fantasy drafts.
