Sonny Gray A Target For Braves?

Free-agent right-hander Sonny Gray, who hails from nearby Tennessee and attended Vanderbilt University, has "emerged as a strong possibility" for the Atlanta Braves this offseason. The Braves want to add a starter in free agency and are willing to pay up to get one, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Left-hander Max Fried made only 14 starts in 2023 due to injuries and ended the regular season on the injured list. Right-hander Charlie Morton also missed the NLDS due to a finger injury, so the team was forced to rely on Bryce Elder in Game 3. Fried and Morton are both eligible for free agency after the 2024 season. Gray, 34, made his third All-Star team in 2023 and went 8-8 with a 2.79 ERA (league-best 2.83 FIP) and 1.15 WHIP with 183 K's in 184 innings for the Minnesota Twins.

Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried (finger) has been tabbed to start Game 2 of the National League Division Series against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies on Monday. It was an injury-filled season for Fried, and he finished off the regular season on the injured list due to a blister on his left index finger. The 29-year-old southpaw is now ready to go, though, and he's been excellent this season when he has been healthy, going 8-1 with a 2.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings over 14 starts. In his second-to-last start of the regular season, Fried allowed an earned run while walking two and striking out six in five innings in a no-decision on Sept. 12 in his only start against the Phillies this year.

Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno exited following the second inning of Wednesday’s Wild Card round matchup with the Brewers. Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Max Fried (finger) appears to be on track for Game 2 of the National League Division Series. The left-hander wore a protective bandage across the blister on his finger during his 76-pitch simulated game. However, Fried won't be allowed to wear the bandage in an actual game. The hope is that Fried will be fully healthy before being called upon to pitch in the NLDS. When healthy, Fried holds a strong 2.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 80/18 K/BB ratio across 14 starts this season.

Braves Place Max Fried On 15-Day Injured List

The Atlanta Braves placed left-hander Max Fried (finger) on the 15-day injured list on Friday with a blister on his left index finger and recalled right-hander Darius Vines from the minors in a corresponding move. Fried looked great in his start on Thursday in a win over the Washington Nationals, giving up just one run on a solo homer while walking one and striking out seven in six innings of work, but his blister issues returned in the outing and now he'll miss the rest of the 2023 regular season. The Braves are most likely playing it safe with the 29-year-old All-Star and hope that the blister will be a thing of the past once the postseason begins. Fried will finish the 2023 campaign with a 8-1 record, 2.55 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 80 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings over his 14 starts.

Max Fried Looks Good Thursday, Still Managing Finger Injury

Atlanta Braves left-handed pitcher Max Fried (finger) was solid on Thursday, limiting the Washington Nationals to one run on three hits and a walk over six innings. He struck out seven. Near the end of his start, he had some fluid build-up in his left index finger, which was drained after he was taken out. Fried also skipped his last start with a blister on his left hand, so the Braves will likely be cautious with the lefty heading into the playoffs. Fried said he feels confident he can manage the situation, so he could still make what would likely be his final start at some point next week. Fantasy managers should keep a close eye on the situation, as a decision will need to be made on whether to start Fried in the finals.

Max Fried To Start Thursday

Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried (finger) is scheduled to make his return to the starting rotation on Thursday against the Washington Nationals. Fried was skipped in the rotation the last time around after developing a hot spot on his left index finger during his start last Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies, but he was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Monday and was cleared to return later this week. The Braves, who have already clinched the National League East crown, weren't going to take any chances with the 29-year-old All-Star. Injuries have prevented him from a full workload in 2023, but he's been excellent when he's been available with a 7-1 record, 2.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings across 13 starts. Start him in D.C. on Thursday.

Max Fried Throws Bullpen Session

Atlanta Braves left-hander Max Fried (finger) said he threw a bullpen session on Monday without tape protecting the small blister that developed on his left index finger during the final inning of last Tuesday's start against the Philadelphia Phillies. Fried will be ready to start at some point during the team's four-game series against the Washington Nationals later this week/weekend. The Braves skipped the 29-year-old southpaw's last turn through the rotation as a precaution now that they've already clinched the National League East division title. Fried has dealt with multiple injuries this year and has only made 13 starts for Atlanta, but when he's been out there he's been his All-Star self.

Max Fried Could Return To Rotation This Weekend

The Atlanta Braves don't expect left-hander Max Fried (finger) to make his next start until the team's four-game series against the Washington Nationals this weekend after he developed a hot spot on his finger in his latest start last Tuesday against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Braves have already clinched the National League East title, so they surely aren't going to rush the talented southpaw so that he's not ready for the postseason. Fantasy managers should consider him much more risky than usual if he starts this weekend, too, as he could be on a pitch count as a precaution. Fried has made only 13 starts in 2023 due to injuries, but he's been good when active, going 7-1 with a 2.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings pitched.

Max Fried To Pitch Against Washington

Atlanta Braves starting pitcher Max Fried (finger) will make his next start at some point during the club's series against the Washington Nationals, which will start on Thursday, according to Justin Toscano of the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. The southpaw has been dealing with a finger issue and hasn't started a game since September 12. Over 71 2/3 innings this season, Fried has pitched to a 2.64 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, and 25.3% strikeout rate with a 7-1 record. He'll avoid an injured list stint, which is great news for fantasy managers, and he remains a must-start arm moving forward.

Max Fried Seeks Continued Success Versus Cardinals

The Atlanta Braves try to stave off matching a season-worst four-game losing streak and also a series sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals when starting pitcher Max Fried takes the hill for Thursday's start. The 29-year-old has resumed his ace status since returning from a lengthy stay on the injured list, wearing a 2.86 ERA with 38 strikeouts in 34.2 innings pitched (six starts) since Aug. 4. Fried has plucked the wings of the Redbirds, so to speak, for an overpowering 0.34 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and 29 punchouts in 26.2 career IP versus St. Louis. The southpaw's 2.58 xERA is the best of any qualifying SP this year, so Fried might be able to challenge Luis Castillo as Thursday's top pitching option with Atlanta projecting for more runs scored than any other team by a wide margin on the slate.
