  • Byron Buxton Getting A Breather

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton appears to be getting a day off on Monday against the visiting Chicago White Sox. Austin Martin will take over in center field for the Twins and will hit ninth in the batting order against White Sox rookie right-hander Jonathan Cannon. First baseman Alex Kirilloff will also head leadoff for this one. First baseman Carlos Santana will be the designated hitter. Buxton has so far stayed healthy in 2024, but he's hitting a lowly .217 (15-for-69) with no home runs, nine RBI and no stolen bases in 20 games played. There's still time for the 30-year-old to turns things around, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect frequent running on the base paths to be Buxton's thing anymore. Martin will be a low-upside DFS sleeper in the nine-hole on Monday.

  • Byron Buxton Sitting In First Game Of Doubleheader

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton will be getting some rest during the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Buxton has appeared in all 11 games so far, batting a cumulative .220/.273/.293 stat line with no home runs. Buxton is expected to be starting in center field for the second game later this afternoon and is projected to face Matt Manning. As a result, Austin Martin will man center field and bat in the nine-hole. Martin is a sneaky play in DFS as he will take on Kenta Maeda, who has struggled in his first two starts, pitching to the tune of a 9.00 ERA and 1.56 WHIP.

  • Byron Buxton Back In Lineup Wednesday

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (back) is serving as the designated hitter and is batting second in the team's Grapefruit League game on Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers. Buxton was scratched from the spring lineup on Monday due to back tightness, but it turned out to be a minor issue, which is great news for the oft-injured 30-year-old outfielder. Buxton wasn't able to play a single game in center field in 2023 for Minnesota due to a knee injury that eventually required surgery. His knee is healthy this spring, though, and he's hit one home run and has a 1.074 OPS in Grapefruit League play. The power/speed combination has always been tantalizing with Buxton, but his inability to stay on the field trumps any of the offensive skills he has these days.

  • Byron Buxton Scratched With Back Tightness

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (back) was scratched from Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Boston Red Sox due to lower-back tightness on his right side, according to the team. It's unclear exactly how serious Buxton's back injury is, but given his lengthy injury history, we shouldn't be surprised if it ends up being something that causes him to start the 2024 season on the injured list. The oft-injured 30-year-old was unable to play a single game in the outfield for Minnesota last year due to a knee injury that required offseason surgery. Buxton played in only 85 games in 2023 and hit a weak .207 (63-for-304) but also hit 17 home runs and drove in 42. He has played in over 100 games just one in nine big-league seasons, so Buxton's inability to stay on the field now far outweighs his actual power/speed capabilities.

  • Twins Notes: Kirilloff, Santana, Buxton

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Not long after the Jorge Polanco trade cleared room in the Twins’ budget, the front office added Carlos Santana on a $5.25MM free agent pact. The veteran offers an alternative at first base to Alex Kirilloff, who started 58 games there a year ago. Minnesota has stopped short of declaring either player the starting first baseman. However,…

  • Byron Buxton Playing Center Field Tuesday

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) is playing center field on Tuesday in the Grapefruit League game against the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time since Aug. 22 of 2022. He's also hitting second in the batting order. Injuries have been the story of Buxton's career to this point, despite all of power/speed talent. The 30-year-old needed surgery on his knee last October but said he's been feeling great so far this spring and plans to be the team's full-time center fielder in 2024. After making his first All-Star team in 2022, Buxton only played in 85 games last year and hit a weak .207 (63-for-304), but he also managed to club 17 home runs. Buxton still has the ability to be a league-winner if he can stay healthy, but the odds are against that since he's played in over 100 games just one in his nine seasons in the majors with the Twins.

  • Byron Buxton Thinks He Can Steal 30 Bases In 2024

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) said he's been talking with Willi Castro about how many bases they can each steal this season, and Buxton said he thinks he's got 30 in him this year. "That means I'm on a lot and running a lot. I feel good. I feel real good," Buxton said. The 30-year-old oft-injured outfielder just needs to worry about staying healthy first. He's played in over 100 games in a season just once (in 2017) in his nine-year MLB career and has gone over 20 steals just once (also in 2017), so fantasy managers would be wise not to have that high of expectations for him on the basepaths in 2024. Buxton had arthroscopic knee surgery in September and couldn't even play defense in Minnesota at all in 85 games in 2023. He did manage 17 homers last year, but his plate skills overall declined, putting him outside RotoBaller's top-100 outfielders entering the 2024 season.

Mike's Take Pretty tough to expect Buxton to stay healthy enough to steal 30 bags. Part of his injury risk comes from running the bases. He hit 91 games two seasons ago, which is his highest since 2017 (134).

  • Byron Buxton Says He's Fully Healthy

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) said he is fully healthy heading into the 2024 season, which has put his mind at ease. He said he expects a normal buildup this spring as he prepares to return to center field for the Twins. "The pain's gone, so I'm a lot more happy. 100 percent. 100 percent. The last couple years were definitely painful," Buxton said. The 30-year-old oft-injured outfielder didn't play a single game in center field in the majors last year and had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee in September to address patellar tendinitis. We'll believe Buxton playing center field on a regular basis when we see it. He hit just .207 (63-for-304) in 85 games in 2023, but he did manage to club 17 home runs and drive in 42. In addition to his knee injury, he also dealt with calf, back and rib issues. Buxton is probably the most risky player in the game because of his inability to stay out of the trainer's room.

  • Byron Buxton Expected To Return To Center Field

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

Minnesota Twins outfielder Byron Buxton (knee) said he plans to be back in center field for the team in 2024 despite being limited to designated hitter duties in 2023. Buxton hasn't played center field since August of 2022 and he can't say for sure how often he'll be able to play center field in 2024. But for now, he's running three times a week, hitting at full strength and doing some outfield work. It comes after offseason surgery that included an excision of the plica in his right knee to address the pain that kept him from playing defense. The Twins are a lot more optimistic about Buxton's knee than they were heading into last spring training. The 30-year-old managed to his 17 home runs in 85 games, but his knee injury impacted his swing and he hit just .207 with a .731 OPS. Buxton said his swing feels "as close to normal as it's going to get," but he's become one of the biggest injury risks in all of baseball.

  • Twins Claim Bubba Thompson Off Waivers From Yankees

    Headshot for Byron Buxton

The Minnesota Twins claimed outfielder Bubba Thompson off waivers from the New York Yankees on Wednesday. Thompson is on his fifth different team since last August. The 25-year-old former first-round pick in 2017 by the Texas Rangers has played in 92 games the last two seasons with the Rangers and has gone 54-for-223 (.242) with one home run, 13 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 241 trips to the plate. The 25-year-old will give the Twins some center field depth with Byron Buxton (knee) coming off yet another injury-plagued season in 2023. Speed is Thompson's greatest asset, and he can also play all three outfield positions. He's going to need to show better discipline at the plate when he gets chances in Minnesota so that he can get on base more often to utilize his excellent speed.
