  • Craig Counsell Not Committing To Any Bullpen Roles

    Headshot for Adbert Alzolay

Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell isn't committing to a specific closer to open his first season with the club in 2024. There are high-leverage arms in Chicago's bullpen, but Counsell isn't ready to give out defined roles this spring among names like Adbert Alzolay, Julian Merryweather, Mark Leiter Jr. and Hector Neris. The best bet for both the Cubs and fantasy managers to serve as the primary closer in 2024 is Alzolay, who posted a strong 2.67 ERA (3.02 FIP), a 1.12 WHIP, a career-high 22 saves, 13 walks and 67 strikeouts in 64 innings out of the bullpen in 2023 in his fifth season with the Cubbies. However, he'll more be more of a No. 2 closer in fantasy with Counsell having other options late in games that he can be flexible with.

  • Cubs Have Multiple Late-Inning Options In Their Bullpen

    Headshot for Yency Almonte

The Chicago Cubs can employ a number of arms, depending on matchups, when it comes to closing out games in 2024, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. Adbert Alzolay ran away with the closer role last season, racking up 22 saves to lead the team. Julian Merryweather served as an excellent setup man, working a career-high 72 innings. However, the Cubs bullpen started to wilt down the stretch due to the high workloads so the team has addressed the issue this offseason with the additions of Hector Neris and Yency Almonte. Neris, in particular, who has closing experience, is likely to see some save opportunities along with Alzolay. Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy told reporters back in January that "solidifying the bullpen is a priority for me. I don't think that means necessarily a top-end, back-end guy. But just some solid, usable pieces in the middle that can pitch valuable innings and maybe push some of the workload away from some of the guys we had to rely on so much last year." It appears that the Cubs have made the necessary moves to ease workloads so we'll see how this plays out once the season begins. Alzolay, Neris, and Merryweather will all have fantasy value this upcoming season, especially in leagues that count holds.

  • Cubs Sign Hector Neris

    Headshot for Hector Neris

The Cubs have signed right-hander Hector Neris to a one-year, $9MM contract, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (via X).  There is a $9MM club option attached for the 2025 season, and that vests into a player option if Neris makes at least 60 appearances this season.  Between that option and additional incentive bonuses, the deal could…

  • Hector Neris, Cubs Agree To One-Year Deal

    Headshot for Adbert Alzolay

Free-agent right-handed reliever Hector Neris and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a one-year, $9 million contract that includes an option for the 2025 season, according to a source familiar with the deal. The $9 million team option converts to a player option at 60 games. The total maximum value of the deal with incentives is $23.25 million. The 34-year-old gives the Cubs another high-leverage, late-inning option alongside Adbert Alzolay, and Neris could also see some save chances, making him plenty valuable in mixed fantasy leagues in 2024. He's coming off the best season of his career in 2023 with the Houston Astros, going 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA (1.05 FIP), two saves, 31 walks and 77 strikeouts in 68 1/3 relief innings pitched. Neris tied for the league lead with 31 holds and will at least be very popular in those formats yet again.

  • Latest On Yankees' Bullpen Targets

    Headshot for Keynan Middleton

The Yankees are primarily focused on bullpen additions at this stage of the offseason and have been tied to various free agents over the past few weeks. Right-hander Hector Neris has been among the most oft-cited potential targets for the Yanks, and while SNY’s Andy Martino writes that the team has indeed spoken to the…

  • Mets Interested In Ryne Stanek, Héctor Neris

    Headshot for Hector Neris

The Mets have interest in free agent right-hander Ryne Stanek, per Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. That would track with the club’s interest in making further bullpen moves, something that was confirmed by president of baseball operations David Stearns recently. Andy Martino of SNY relays that the club is willing to spend another $10MM or so…

  • Mets Interested In Aroldis Chapman, Hector Neris

    Headshot for Aroldis Chapman

The New York Mets have expressed interest in free-agent relievers Aroldis Chapman and Hector Neris this offseason, according to league sources. Neris might be a better fit for the New York Yankees, but his asking price of one or two years at $7-11 million per year would fit the Mets' budget. The Mets have also spoken to left-hander Wandy Peralta as they look to upgrade their bullpen. Chapman seems more likely to find a better fit elsewhere, and Adam Ottavino, who declined a $6.75 million option for 2024, is a possibility to return to the Mets on a new deal. Edwin Diaz, who missed all of 2023 due to a knee injury, is returning as the club's primary closer this year, so any relief pitcher that the Mets sign between now and the start of the regular season will operate in more of a late-inning setup role out of the bullpen.

    Headshot for Hector Neris

Free agent reliever Hector Neris is seeking a two-year contract in the $22MM range, reports Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The veteran righty is among the more accomplished bullpen arms still on the open market. It seems Neris’ free agency could resolve in the near future.
