Boston Red Sox southpaw James Paxton (hamstring) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session on Saturday. Paxton is recovering from a right hamstring strain that he sustained in his first spring training start on March 3rd. He is expected to throw one more session along with two live BPs before pitching in a game. With the pace that he's on, Paxton will likely begin the season on the injured list. The 34-year-old missed the entire 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and anticipates making a comeback in 2023. He last pitched a full season in 2019 with the New York Yankees and composed a 3.82 ERA across 29 starts. Evidently, Paxton has had a bumpy past few seasons but the Red Sox are hoping to reinvigorate the success that he had just a few seasons ago.

Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain, which is the least serious. However, he'll be shut down for a bit in spring training and seems unlikely to be on the Opening Day roster. The Red Sox's rotation will be thin to open the season, with both Brayan Bello and Garrett Whitlock also behind due to injuries this spring. Paxton, who has made just six starts in the last three years due to injury, has become quite familiar with the injured list. Paxton said he's unsure how much time he'll have to miss, but he'll see how he's feeling on Saturday and go from there. The 34-year-old southpaw said he felt good on the mound before the injury, and it sounds as though it might just be a minor strain, if anything. Still, for a pitcher that missed all of last year due to Tommy John surgery and who has made just six starts in the last three years due to injuries, it's not a good sign to see him injured in his spring debut. Given all his injuries in recent years, Paxton is extremely hard to trust.

Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (leg) left his Grapefruit League outing on Friday against the Minnesota Twins with two outs in the second inning and was seen flexing his leg. The good news is that the injury didn't appear to be serious, as he walked through the dugout and was giving teammates fist bumps. This isn't what you want to see from one of the most injured pitchers over the last few seasons, but his exit from the game looked to be precautionary. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw is expected to be a staple in Boston's starting rotation in 2023 if he can stay healthy. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much, though, as Paxton missed all of 2022 due to Tommy John surgery, and he's tossed just 21 2/3 innings over six starts in the last three years.

James Paxton Back To Full Health

After being shut down last August with a lat strain, Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (lat) is back to full strength. He threw eight bullpen sessions this winter and had his first bullpen session of spring training on Thursday. Boston turned down a two-year, $26 million club option this winter, but Paxton exercised a player option in his contract worth $4 million to stay with the team in 2023. The 34-year-old should reside in Boston's rotation if he can stay healthy, but it's tough to get too excited about him since he's thrown only 21 2/3 innings over the last three seasons due to injuries. Expect serious workload restrictions in 2023, which will cap his fantasy upside.

James Paxton Healthy This Spring

Boston Red Sox left-hander James Paxton (lat) is entering spring training this year healthy, as opposed to last year. Paxton didn't pitch at all in 2022 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but he also suffered a Grade 2 left lat strain in August. But with no restrictions with pitchers and catchers reporting to camp this week, the 34-year-old veteran southpaw should be ready for the start of the 2023 regular season in Boston's starting rotation. Paxton has plenty of strikeout upside when healthy (9.9 career K/9), but he's made only six starts (21 2/3 innings) since the 2020 season, so his workload will likely be monitored throughout the season.
