  • Gerrit Cole Out To 120 Feet

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) got out to 120 feet on flat ground in his throwing program on Tuesday, which is typically as far out as pitchers will go before getting on the mound as they rehab. With that said, Cole isn't sure when he will advance to throwing off a mound. He will take the day off on Wednesday and go from there as he ramps up his throwing progression. If the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young winner feels good later this week, manager Aaron Boone said he could star throwing off a mound next week. Fantasy managers in all formats need to keep Cole stashed in an injured-list spot as he attempts to come back from nerve irritation in his right elbow, but he still has a ways to go.

  • Gerrit Cole Plays Catch On Back-To-Back Days

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) is playing catch again on Wednesday in New York, which is his first time doing so on back-to-back days after increasing his throwing distance to 75 feet on Tuesday. Manager Aaron Boone said there is no set date for Cole to get on a mound, though. The Yankees will continue to take things slowly with the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, who is building his stamina back up. If all continues to go well in his recovery from discomfort in his right elbow, Cole has a chance to return to New York's rotation when he's first eligible to come off the 60-day injured list in early June. Right-handers Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil should continue making starts for the Yanks through the month of May at least, but the two hurlers are only low-end fantasy streamers under the appropriate circumstances.

  • Gerrit Cole Expected To Throw On Tuesday

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) didn't throw at all on Monday, according to manager Aaron Boone. The right-hander continues to slowly work his way back up from an elbow injury that has sidelined him since the beginning of the season. It sounds like the plan is to have Cole rest on Monday before throwing again on Tuesday. He's expected to throw up to 75 feet during his Tuesday session. Fantasy managers will continue to need to be patient with Cole. He likely won't be back in the Yankees rotation until the end of May.

  • Gerrit Cole Plays Catch For Second Time

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees starter Gerrit Cole (elbow) played catch on Thursday, according to MLB.com. It was the second time the star right-hander has played catch since going on the 60-day injured list. Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted that session went well, but he did not mention when Cole will throw again. The 33-year-old is not eligible for activation until late May, though there is no guarantee he will be ready to return by then. Cole still deserves to be stashed in all formats until further notice, but it is safe to assume the Yankees will take things slow with their ace.

  • Gerrit Cole Plays Catch Monday With No Issues

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) played catch on Monday without a problem. It's a positive first step for Cole after he was diagnosed with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow. The 33-year-old is going to be out for at least several months, but the hope is that he can avoid surgery that would knock him out for the entire 2024 season and likely the start of next year, too. Cole has opened the year on the 60-day injured list and will not be eligible to be activated by the Yankees until at least late May. It's a tough blow for anyone that drafted Cole this year as their fantasy ace, but he needs to remain stashed in an IL spot in all leagues until further notice.

  • Gerrit Cole To Resume Playing Catch Monday Or Tuesday

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) will resume playing catch on Monday or Tuesday, according to manager Aaron Boone. Cole is currently on the 60-day injured list due to right-elbow inflammation, and the initial timetable for his return to the Yankees was set at one to two months. While it's good news that the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young winner is making good progress, fantasy baseball managers may not want to get their hopes up that Cole returns before two months. The Yankees aren't going to rush one of the most dominant pitchers along too quickly. It remains to be seen if Cole will be as dominant as he was last year when he returns, but he needs to be stashed in an injured list spot in all fantasy leagues.

  • Yankees Believe Gerrit Cole Is Close To Throwing

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said on Tuesday that he thinks starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) is close to throwing again. Boone didn't specify a day, but he added that things have gone well so far. New York placed Cole on the 60-day injured list to start the season as he works his way from inflammation in his right elbow, so the right-hander won't be a factor for fantasy managers until the end of May at the earliest. If all goes well for the 33-year-old reigning American League Cy Young Award winner in his recovery, however, he could build his arm back up and return when first eligible. The 5-0 Yankees are likely to take things slowly with their ace, though. Cole led the AL in ERA (2.63) and hits per nine innings (6.8) last year, and his 0.98 WHIP was the best mark in the majors. In his stead, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil will serve as starters in the rotation and carry streaming appeal in fantasy in the proper matchups.

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

The Yankees announced a series of Opening Day roster moves today, with right-hander Gerrit Cole placed on the 60-day injured list. • Gerrit Cole Could Begin Season On 60-Day IL

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

Yankees GM Brian Cashman stated that starting pitcher Gerrit Cole could be placed on the 60-Day IL if they need to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. Cole is expected to miss an extended amount of time anyway, so putting him on the IL would give them some roster flexibility. If the Yankees were to do that, that would at least firm up the fact that the 6x All-Star would not return before late May or early June at the earliest, and fantasy managers can adjust expectations accordingly. Cole's draft stock has already plummeted of course, but a late-round flier on a pitcher with Cole's ceiling seems like a reasonable gamble, assuming he won't need to miss any additional time and provided you have space to stash him.

  • Gerrit Cole To Be Shut Down From Throwing For 3-4 Weeks

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow), the reigning American League Cy Young winner, said he will be shut down from throwing for three to four weeks and then go from there. He said he has nerve inflammation in his right elbow but "felt good" after meeting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles this week. The 33-year-old ace wasn't bouncing back normally after his spring outings, prompting the team to send him for a battery of tests. It's been confirmed that Cole doesn't have a torn UCL, so the Yankees are hoping that after a month or two of rest, he'll be able to make his 2024 debut without having to go under the knife. Cole was RotoBaller's No. 2 fantasy starter before his elbow injury, but now he's ranked at No. 72 with the possibility that he could miss most of the first half of the season.

  • Gerrit Cole Won't Need Tommy John Surgery

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) was told on Thursday that he will not need Tommy John surgery, at least for now, after visiting with Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Cole has been advised to rest and undergo non-invasive treatment while being shut down for at least a month. The reigning American League Cy Young reported not recovering as expected between outings this spring, which prompted the team to send him for an MRI exam on his right elbow before traveling to LA for a second opinion. The 33-year-old has made at least 30 starts in every full season since 2017, but that's going to change in 2024, and there's still no guarantee that he won't need TJ surgery down the road. It makes him a high-risk fantasy ace in 2024 drafts.

  • More Tests Coming For Gerrit Cole

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole (elbow) has had X-rays and a CT scan on his elbow, in addition to an MRI. He flew to Los Angeles on Wednesday for an in-person visit with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, where more testing is planned. There remains no official timeline from the Yankees for Cole's return/recovery, although the New York Post reported on Wednesday morning that Cole would miss at least a month or two. ElAttrache and Yankees doctors haven't found a tear in the reigning American League Cy Young winner's right elbow, but there remains some concern. Cole is one of, if not the most, dominant starting pitchers in baseball, so losing him for an extended period of time would be a devastating blow to New York's rotation to begin the year. Stay tuned for more news on Cole, but needless to say, he's now become a huge risk as a fantasy ace in 2024.

  • Gerrit Cole To Miss At Least 1-2 Months

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (elbow) will be out at least one to two months and will head to Los Angeles for an appointment with noted sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache. None of the team's doctors or ElAttrache have detected a tear in Cole's UCL, but there's enough concern about the ligament that ElAttrache has suggested an in-person visit. The defending American League Cy Young winner will be out for an "extended period," but for now the hope is that he'll have a chance to return in May or early June. The 33-year-old has shown excellent velocity and command this spring, but his recovery has been an issue, and he felt a twinge in his elbow after a Grapefruit League start. Even if Cole avoids Tommy John surgery, this news is a big hit for his high-end fantasy value and for the top of the Yankees' rotation to begin the 2024 season.

  • Gerrit Cole Will Undergo More Testing, Likely Not Ready For Opening Day

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated that there is no update on starting pitcher Gerrit Cole's (elbow) MRI and that last year's American League Cy Young winner will undergo more testing Tuesday. Boone also acknowledged that regardless of what is determined from the testing, Cole has not got enough work in this spring and as a result would likely not be ready for Opening Day. The team would determine another starter for the first game of the season in his stead. It sounds like it will be a couple more days until we know anything more definitive, but it's obviously not good news for the Yankees or for fantasy managers. Stay tuned.

  • Gerrit Cole To Have MRI On Pitching Elbow

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole (elbow) is set to have an MRI on his pitching elbow. This is a concerning release for both the Yankees and fantasy managers. Cole is arguably the top pitcher in baseball and fantasy alike. According to Yankees manager Aaron Boone, Cole is having trouble recovering between starts. Per Cole, it feels like his recovery after throwing 100 pitches during the season. Cole has made just one start this spring and threw 39 pitches over two innings. He has been the definition of a workhorse in his career, topping 180 innings pitched seven times and 200 innings pitched six times. Coming off his first Cy Young award, Cole was getting more challenging to hit going into his age 33 season as he surrendered just 6.8 hits per nine innings, the best in the game last season. Keep tabs on this developing situation, as this could cause a big shake-up to fantasy plans and possibly the Yankees' plans heading into the season.

  • Gerrit Cole Has Mixed Results During Spring Debut

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees starting pitcher Gerrit Cole made his spring debut against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. The veteran right-hander saw mixed results during Friday's win. Cole allowed two runs on four hits over two innings of work. The 33-year-old stuck out one batter and didn't issue a walk during his short outing. He served up a two-run home run to Daniel Vogelbach in the opening frame. After that, Cole settled down and looked fairly sharp. Fantasy managers shouldn't read too much into this outing and believe in Cole as the ace pitcher he'll likely continue to be in 2024.

  • Gerrit Cole To Face Live Hitters Wednesday

    Headshot for Gerrit Cole

New York Yankees right-hander Gerrit Cole is scheduled to face live hitters at spring training on Wednesday over two innings for his first live batting practice session of camp. Cole won the American League Cy Young award in 2023 by going 15-4 with a league-best 2.63 ERA (3.16 FIP), a league-best 0.981 WHIP, 48 walks and 222 strikeouts in a league-high 209 innings over 33 starts. The six-time All-Star has had an ERA over 4.00 just once in his 11 major-league seasons and has now topped the 200-strikeout mark six times in his career, including in each of the last two seasons. He's fully healthy as he prepares for the start of his 12th season in the majors and is justifiably in consideration to be the first starting pitcher off the board in upcoming fantasy drafts.
